He’s played more games as a footballer as a forward/winger than as a full back. Drawing some odd line at ‘Professional first team game’ is a bit petty.
What?

That's like saying James Wilson is a proven goalscorer cause we shouldn't draw a line at his professional first team performances.

No, he wasn't. He didn't look out of place, but Maguire did most of the defending between the two.
I'll moderate myself a bit. It's definitely arguable, but there wasn't much between them. However, it's impressive of Maguire to look so at home after only a few days with the team.

Shaw had an alright game yesterday but he will come good again. Anyway we have Dalot for cover before Young, I hope.
Yeah I'm not saying he was bad - thought he was a solid 7/10 yesterday and not helped by Rashford failing to track back for the entirety of the first half (improved after the break) - but he's definitely the weakest link in our defence.

But you're right, we've got Dalot as an understudy on both sides, plus the likes of Laird and Williams coming through. Either way you know Shaw will have Salah in his pocket again this season so no harm done.

Chelsea created so many chances. If this centre back pairing was so good why did Chelsea keep creating chances then?
What about you re-watch the game again and pay attention where and how they created the chances.

I take it you didn't watch the games and are looking at stats?

Whilst Chelsea did create a lot of chances and we were lucky to not concede, you can't blame a CB pairing for the opposition's build up play that goes on in front of them. It's easy to forget but DDG made a huge amount of saves and whilst none were as spectacular as we've seen in the past, there were enough that it was troubling but very few came directly from CB errors. Only one I can think of is when Maguire and AWB went for same ball, missed and it fell for a Chelsea player to shoot.

However, this thread is about Maguire & Lindelof who both played well yesterday. Pog and McT lost the ball nearly 20 times between them yesterday so I'd bet if we can cut out the stupid mistakes, we'd look a lot less open. As a back 5 inc DDG we looked great. Where we looked very poor was in the link between the defensive 5 and the CMs and until that's addressed I think it'll be very difficult to keep clean sheets.

Looked solid yesterday. Both intercepting for fun, winning headers left, right and center. It's nice not seeing the chuckle brothers anywhere near the first team. Hopefully Axel will get a few minutes in the coming weeks

Lindelof was just as good as Maguire yesterday and people want him replaced with a youngster who has never played at the top level. Typical Caf.

It has a lot of potential and seems to be a nice balance. Maguire being the vocal leader but still yet to enter his prime and Lindelof with a few years premier league experience behind him being cool on the ball. Both are good with the ball at their feet and whilst Lindelof isn't dominant in the air he has a number of qualities that figure to compliment Magure well. The difference a respected leader at the back makes is incredible. Night and day from having Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Smalling there.

With De Gea seemingly set to sign long term and poised for captaincy I think that's a good spine and with AWB on board and (hopefully) Shaw staying fit and reliable we've potentially set our defense up for a while to come especially with Tuanzebe waiting in the wings and possibly Dalot to be able to cover both full-back positions or be useful in a 5-3-2 if we go that route at some point.

Hopefully we can see that sort of significant overhaul with our midfield in the summer.

Exactly. The underrating of Lindelof here is pretty weird.

Don't quite agree with that, but he's certainly now looking a lot more the part then before.
Maguire is clearly a good few notches ahead, as you'd hope for that money!

I thought they complimented each other very well. Neither made any mistakes. Both excellent. Lindelof is 24 and is still very young for a defender. We could have a partnership here for 7-8 years if we’re lucky. Who Tuanzebe displaces remains to be seen, if at all, Maguire or Lindelof — only if he’s good enough. No point trying to stick him in the first team on a back of a season at championship level.

These two need to be given a chance to form a partnership now. We have barely had one for years.
I preferred Smalling to Lindelöf, before seeing how deep Lindelöf was getting the ball in our own box, and how comfortable he was on it. Smalling simply wouldn't be, as much I prefer his height and pace to Lindelöf - if we're going to play this way, we have to go Lindelöf.

No idea how Tuanzebe gets higher up the list than Smalling though. Maybe it's because he hasn't made any mistakes, so us untainted as of yet

Our midfield couldn't contain Chelsea, so they got into positions to create chances.

Our defense made it hard for them to get good chances, so most of their stuff came from long-range shots.

It is what to expect for this season without a proper DM being added to the squad.

Is he being underrated? I hadn't noticed, to be honest.

Lindelof has been steadily improving since early last season. He brings an element of calm to our backline that has not been present since Rio was in the team, and he complements Maguire's no-nonsense style perfectly.

He may also turn out to be one of the rare successful signings from Jose. A fact I'm sure the mouthy one will remind us of many times this season.

Looks very promising indeed.I think that the two of them will just go from strength to strength...Lindelofs now playing as a RCB which obviously will help him fulfill his potential...

I like Lindeguire a lot. Maguire did bail Shaw out on more than one occasion... I think having Maguire on Shaw’s side will only help Shaw learn from him and hopefully Maguire can teach him more intelligent positioning....

I was impressed with the calmness they both showed to play the ball out from the back, even though my heart didn’t like it! My worry is that de gea isn’t the best passer around so using him as a last resort to play out will lead to a few turnovers I’m sure.

They will only get better as a defensive unit though and hopefully we can have a consistent backline through the season. The last few years we have chopped and changed the backline too often due to injuries etc...

I can see us giving game time to Tuanzebe in the europa though, he looked solid in the pre season.

Has the potential to be up there with Vidic and Rio but it’s early days.

No doubt Maguire will improve Lindelof as they already seem to have good communication with each other

Well if you read this thread, people can’t wait to replace him with Tuanzebe.

It’s one game but, given Harry had a few days with the United team, his performance was nothing short of classy. Lindolof responded too. Pogba was asleep on the first half and needs sorting out. A great pass to Rashford though but he needs to perform for 90 mins. Let’s batter Wolves next week.

Potentially I think Lindelof and Maguire are as good as any centre back pairing in the league and both being at the age they are could play together for 6-7 years and become a real force.

Having Tuanzebe as main back up to them is also great as he’s very quick as well as good on the ball so helps with what both Lindelof and Maguire lack in pace and compliments how Ole wants our centre backs to play.

I really wish we’d kept Daley Blind though as he’d be perfect as main back up to Maguire on the left side of the pairing and far better than Jones, Bailly and Rojo. I’m cool about Smalling staying as when he’s alongside a ball playing leader he gets to focus on his main quality which is straight up defending and again his pace helps what Lindelof and Maguire lack in pace.

I know you're just being obtuse Nick but AWB hasn't played a single professional first team game as a winger. He's as much a "winger turned full back" as Ashley Cole or Patrice Evra.
He never played a single game at RW at first team level because he was a rubbish winger. He was even deemed not good enough to play at RW by Cambridge manager Shaun Derry in League two after he had a trial at the club playing as a RW.

Tuanzebe will displace Lindelof IMO. Been saying it for two years now and I'm not gonna change my mind now that Axel is 3rd choice and positioned to make a real go of it.

Maguire and Tuanzebe longterm IMO.

I really liked how the partnership looked yesterday as they were both so calm on the ball.

Its a small gripe but you have to wonder how much further ahead they'd be as a partnership if we'd got this deal done in July and they'd had a month to train together. There will be much tougher tests ahead as the movement of City and Liverpool will surely cause us problems, and it'll be interesting to see how they deal.

How long-term are we looking at 2 years down the line or more because you are simply overrating Tuanzebe even if Lindelof fails to build good partner ship with Maguire I highly doubt Tuanzebe would be preferred choice to replace him we will simply have to buy another top cb.

How am I over rating Tuanzebe? I have always maintained that he had more in his locker than Lindelof and there was no need to purchase the Swede. But our manager at the time was Mourinho who isn't exactly known for giving chances to young players. Tuanzebe had already shown a good level starting games for us in the first team. The performance against Arsenal away was pretty impressive against Alexis Sanchez who was one of the best attackers in the league at the time. But Mourinho decided to buy Lindelof who was a slower version of Axel IMO. Had we had Ole in charge at the time I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have signed Lindelof and he would've given Tuanzebe a chance. Mason Greenwood would also be playing a full season at u23 level if we still had Mourinho and Rashford wouldn't have been promoted at 18 under the Portuguese.

Tuanzebe is just as good as Lindelof on the ball, but has recovery pace in abundance aswell as strength over the Swede. Ole has him currently as 3rd choice over the likes of Smalling because he's a better footballer. Apart from experience, Lindelof has nothing on Axel.

And to the person talking about wanting new toys etc. The new toy was Lindelof, not Axel. Axel was putting in good performances for the first team before the Swede set foot inside OT.

I must say I do agree with our resident youth expert @jb8521 on what he's saying in this tweet.

They can only get better as a partnership, problem we have is not much protection in front of them so any mistake and the negative brigade will be into them!

Quite a few shots inside the 12 yard box actually. Unless the defence dropped so deep in line with Gk, that was their area. Have to say, we were quite lucky.

I'm not sold on Lindelof yet. I think he'd played well vs Chelsea and was just ok last year, but nothing that really set him apart from Smalling other than his ball skills. Hopefully he takes his game up another level with Maguire playing next to him. Was really nice to see a top class CB playing for United again.
