Just not quite seeing it with this lad. He's captained England at his age group so he is highly rated but I honestly dont see what he does that would suggest he would make it here. Just seems to be ok at most things. Levitt looks more talented to me but I dont think he'll make it here either.

Perhaps someone can tell me what I'm missing here

He's exceptional at controlling the tempo of the game, which is a skill I find can't really be taught, shows he has a very good understanding on the game's flow. Add that to the fact he's a mixture of all the attributes we've been crying out for in a CDM/DLP: he's good tackler, passer, very mobile and has great vision. He possesses important leadership qualities, his attitude on the pitch is fantastic. He's also versatile, when he played at CB he was very good there too. Will he make it here? Who knows, he's a very good player though.

I don't see him as a defender at all! Looks great as a deep playmaker in the Carrick mould! I think it's fair to say the U18's are collectively out of form at the moment but his class is still evident. Agree that Levitt has great potential though; great vision and passing range! Will be interesting how we go about integrating these kids. It seems they're going to get opportunities next season
Strange, I watched him last season and over the summer and he seemed to be going strength to strength. Has he regressed since?
It’s nothing to do with a decline as a midfielder, it’s just about evaluating where his ability will be maximised moving forward; in an era where Lindelof and Stones are regarded as ‘ball playing’ because they take too long on the ball before they play a primitive pass, someone like Garner, with his passing range, could easily eclipse them by his early 20s.

He’ll be fantastic in either role, but at this age it’d be better to learn the intricacies of defending as he looks to have already mastered the midfield role - plus he’s almost been forced into a more box to bid role ATM anyway with Levitt seemingly trusted as the DLP.

I don't get what people are talking about. Garner's attributes is perfect for number 6 role, and that's why he's so highly regarded. There's a reason why we played him up to midfield since U15s, just like how we moved Rashford up to striker.

What are the chances of him making an appearance tonight?

What would be his best role?

Congrats to him on his debut, fingers crossed he can stay injury free and get some more minutes in the league from here on.

I think out of the 3 (Garner, Chong and Gomes) I think he has the best chance to make it here.

Greenwood and Laird being ahead of Chong and Gomes too.

Great moment for him. Hopefully there's more where this came from. Maybe give him something like 20 minutes next time, allow him to get involved. Not too sure about Gomes and Chong but I have high hopes for him, Greenwood and Laird.

He has everything I want to see except dribbling ability. I think that’s so crucial in his role. I don’t mean Ryan Giggs’ mazy dribbling, but more Marco Verratti shuffles to skip away from a press. Busquets and Pirlo has great feet under pressure, for instance.

Better than Pogba and Lingard?
It would be amazing for the club if we get 2 players of their standard out of them.

Greenwood
Garner
Gomes
Chong
Laird

I'm most confident of Greenwood and Laird but also think Garner has a shot.

You should add O 'Connor to that list. He has great chance to make it here but will need go on loan 1st.

Seems unlikely. Laird has been the one name dropped and Lee hasn't been included in any of the promotion to the first team like the others. I hope he pushes for a move away in the summer. He's way too good to be farting around in the u23s playing for a degenerate moron in Sbragia. He is a top talent and if we aren't going to give him a chance then he needs to go elsewhere now.

I still believe Lee has a chance, we'll be getting rid of Valencia, Damian, TFM and Rojo and possibly another CH in the summer which will create opportunities for O connor and Laird. Both are versatile and attacking minded and are good defenders. Defenders need more experience before they start to get the chances in the 1st team squad. I can see O connor in the summer squad and going out on loan if he's deemed to need more experience. He should be pushing for a loan. He's highly rated by McKenna and Carrick so time will tell if he'll get a chance, he'll have to make the most of the summer tour if he makes the squad.

There seem to be a lot of carrick comparisons. Personally I think hes a bit like Nicky butt. Looks very controlled in his slide tackles.

How far is he from first team football, with the fact we don't have a DM playing right now?

He's the reason why I'm not at all bothered about the "new shiny thing", Declan Rice. In an ideal world Garner would serve as Matic's understudy for a couple of years before taking the reigns. Unfortunately this isn't an ideal world because Matic looks completely shot. What the solution is, I don't know. Regardless, Garner in my opinion should be a squad option next season alongside several other players from our academy.

We'll only know in pre season. The fact that we're still in with a chance of 4th seems unlikely that Ole will put him in.

Garner needs to get some game time as if we have any injuries to our few midfielders he needs to be ready.

Dylan Levitt is the one that is most similar to Carrick among our youngsters.
Garner is more of a defensive specialist than Carrick was. Garner is very combative, but also great on the ball. A DM that is great with the ball. So I can see why you would say Levitt is more similar to Carrick, but do think that Carrick was able to develop his defensive positioning with age where as Levitt doesn't have that right now.

This season feels like it'd be too early for him...at the very least another year of development wouldn't do him any harm. Though if it starts to look too easy for him maybe then it's different.

You will see Garner this season in the first team at times, nothing bothers him, incredibly talented, what a right foot he has.
