If I remember from last season, the fa cup game was one of our poorest displays, very lack lustre, didn't create anything at all, and I also think that Lindelof had one of his worst games since getting back into the team. In the league game, I believe we went ahead through McTominay, and we're quite comfortable, but a couple of poor mistakes cost us. Don't think the team will change much, the same back four, but perhaps a slight change in the system. Think Ole will give players like Pereira a few games to see if he can start to influence games. Perhaps Fred will be on the bench, if fit. Not the game to start Gomes, but hopefully will see him coming into the squad over the next few weeks. Don't really want to see Matic appearing.

Probably start the same team but maybe James for Pereira on the right with Lingard clearly central.

Their midfield will run circles around ours like they did last year. No question about that. Moutinho is a brilliant tempo dictator and we will find it hard to get into the game because of him

    Two options:

    1) we set up like we did against Chelsea and rely on Maguire to make their possession blunt and we set up for lethal counter attacking
    2) we drop Fred into a midfield 3 with pogba and Scott and try to dominate them in midfield. We are not going to win the keep ball competition but at least we won’t have DDG/Maguire working overtime stopping the flood through our useless 2 man midfield.

I think the best option is to drop Fred/Matic/Perreira next to Scott and have Pogba in the #10 so that we can get the best out of a midfield 3. Leaves Pogba free to ping a deadly counter once we win the ball in midfield.

Rashford, Martial and James up front 100%.

I'm hoping to see a slight tactical change from the last game as we need to play to our strengths but surely need to cover for our weakness in midfield better.

A 4-2-2-2 formation with rashford and martial leading the line and a double pivot of mctominay and Fred would be an interesting watch. That might leave pogba and lingard free to provide much needed creativity from the inside left and inside right channel respectively.
What weakness in midfield? The big issue in the Chelsea game was our wide men not tracking fullbacks. The press from the front four was off and they found themselves out of the game time and time again in the first half. Pogba had to come across to help Wan-Bissaka when Chelsea built down their left and Shaw was hung out to dry down the other side.

The narrow shape and attempts to half the pitch and press in superior numbers might actually work better against Wolves with their 3-5-2 shape - less chance of us finding ourselves unbalanced on any switch of play.

We have bigger issue than Shaw!!
Let him form a partnership with his CB and winger and see how he does then.
Shaw hardly ever pushes forward to the byline, even when granted acres of space. He always looks to pull the back and make a sideways or backwards pass and cannot use his right foot at all. He hardly ever gets a cross into the box.

Now, I rate Shaw defensively and he's not terrible as a LB. He just is terrible going forward with what is expected from modern day FB's. With his pace, I'd love to see him bombing downing the line and hitting in crosses. He just doesn't / can't.

I think having Shaw as the weakest of the back 4 is not a bad problem to have. It speaks more to the overall improvement of the other 3 positions more than it does the deficiencies of Shaw.

Gotta be this for me. I'd prefer Gomes to Pereira all day. Plus he gets stuck in so could see him dropping back to make a challenge, aiding the midfield 2. Lingard and Rashford are full of running on the wings too.

Same team as Chelsea but swap Pereira for Matic as we will need more control and steel in midfield. Bring on James for Lingard at around 60 minutes if things arent going our way.

Shaw is terrible as a footballer. Several times in attacking positions we have open players but he can’t pass with his right and has to swivel to get on his left and the opportunity is gone.

Also when left winger is open Shaw is not confident enough to make quick Kong passes out of defense so he usually jobs dribbling and releasing the ball when within a few meters away.
    Terrible post.

Does matic add control and steel? I wouldn't say so anymore. If anything he hinders the way we play.

I wouldn't start with both Pereira and Lingard in the team. Agree to starting with Matic, unfortunately, but not sure about who to replace Lingard with. Just shows our lack of options in midfield after Pogba and McTom. Feel this could be a problem in this game.

We cannot start Lingard and Perreira agreed. both are average players with no outstanding quality.
I would stick with similar team but maybe play mata instead of Perreira because we might need a bit of creativity?

Feck it's John Moss. Only way to make him run is if there was a Greggs behind the goal.

I'd like to see if Fred can be deployed as a deep midfielder to just break up play (I find him good at that rather than relying on passing too much like an 8). Pereira may not have the creative edge required against Wolves so I'd like to see Pogba more advanced.

Greenwood instead of Lingard and that would be a fantastic line up.

Replace Lingard with Gomes. Lingard is a headless chicken, he doesn’t leave any impression on the field maybe 1 out 10 matches where I think he deserve a mentioned. Vs Chelsea, his name was never mentioned by any pundits. Gomes is a clever little fellow, I believe he carry the ball forward, makes the right passes and win a few free kicks in dangerous area. Swap Perreira with Fred for more control in midfield.

Yeah i know, but I can't see ole starting 2 kids especially against wolves. Bring him on about 60-70 if the game is secure.

    Very interesting game.

Ole and the players came up short twice in a row last season so it will be a good challenge to see how they approach the match.

I don’t expect a title challenge this season so I’m more curious about individual matches...this being one of them!

I think It will be the same side apart from Matic taking Pereira’s spot in midfield.

Could we maybe spring a surprise and play 3 at the back in something like a 3-4-1-2 formation?

We should never have lost either of those games there last season. I expect us to win this one like 3-1.

Will not be surprised to see Matic come back for this one with him sitting, Pogba playing higher up the field and McT playing more a B2B role. Wolves are going to try and want to hit us on the counter, so we are going to be higher up the pitch more often, so won't do much to have Pogba in a deeper role like against Chelsea.

Interesting thing will be the right wing, I think James should come in and use him and AWB to widen the pitch but, it may be that we have Shaw and AWB themselves push higher, allowing the likes of Lingard, Martial, Rashford to play a bit more centrally to try and break them down with Pogba pulling the strings a little bit behind them and McT making forays into the box.

Possible since they play a similar formation. It's not been tried at all though in pre season

    Agreed.

Need to win the midfield battle. Going to be hard with our midfield, going to be even harder if we go with Pogba as a CM. Not confident in Fred but Matic is worse.

    Wolves play Thursday.
Suppose we will be playing a lot more matches Monday when we start the Europa Cup matches.
They will go with a few fringe players no doubt as the tie is virtually won. They can now afford to rest Neves, Moutinho, Patricio, Raul and Jota

I would not read too much into them playing in midweek.

I would go with same team and just try to out score Wolves. More worried about this game than I was v Chelsea, get through this with a win and we can go on a run with the confidence built.

Depsite our improvements in defence I see a lot of goals.

    2-3 win.

    No its not.

Wolves over rating on this forum has gotten ridiculous.
They have one draw and two wins against us in the last 2 years
They finished a solid 7th in the premier league last year

Not over rated at all - they are a good team that can trouble any side when they play well
