Was thinking nobody could be as bad as Lingard was tonight and then Mata does what he does. I think America is calling/

Becoming the most uninspiring substitute in the PL. Just blocking the progress of more exciting, dynamic players.

Fellaini wasn’t the emblem of post-Ferguson malaise. That’s Juan Mata: a big name that we had no idea how to fit into the side and still don’t six years later.

Hopefully last season for him. He's done at this level of high football.

I said he was useless 4 years ago, he's only got worse. Should never play in the PL for us.

Just bloody play Gomes/Greenwood instead of him. For the love of everything that is good and holy.

He was pretty terrible when he came on. His strengths are meant to be technical, pin point passing etc. Whats the point of him if he can't even make fairly straightforward passes with fresh legs?

He was absolutely pointless and Ole has got to make the decision on whether he continues to hold Gomes back for players who aren't that creative anymore. I know Gomes is small and still a kid but looking at what's ahead of him I don't think we will lose too much from trying him out and the potential upside is great.

i agree Gomes might have been a better shout. Hard to predict Mata would be that shite when he came on though, i mean wtf happened looked like he'd spent the match smoking mary jane.

I saw people trying to justify his contract extension when it happened. Well buckle in because there is 2 more years of this crap

I hope his poor appearance today means we are going to give Gomes or Greenwood a chance this weekend as I'm pretty confident Lingard will be dropped.

It's like he's missing two pints of blood when he plays these days. A corner that almost didn't make it to the first defender to clear it. It was that weak.
His passing is slow, predictable and weak, much like his physicality. Should be in Qatar or something now.
I know he isn't very old but the PL has long passed him by.

I've always liked Mata, but I'm afraid that we are a couple of years too late in playing him in his preferred position. Two instances I remember were his overhit cross, and the throughball which went pretty much straight to a Wolves player where we would have been in on goal. Our team was crying out for a player like Gomes, who has all the skill that you need to break down a resolute, unflinching defence. Saying that though, we got into three or four very promising positions, and missed the pen, which would have made us comfortable winners.

Agreed. Mata was such a genius boxopener in his prime, hopefully Gomes can be something like that. Greenwood obviously best inside the box.

On what footballing grounds did we offer him an extension ? Seems like it was based on the fact that we would love him as an ambassador post retirement. The sort of decision that sacrifices success on the football pitch. Baffling to still keep him.

There was a moment at the end where Martial has made a good run, you can see the pass that is needed and the ball is falling to Mata and in my head I’m thinking yes, this is falling to the right person to make this pass and he fluffs it, rushes it and plays a shocker of a pass which is cut out.

If there was anyone in our team I would think could deliver quality when it matters it would be him but it just hasn’t been there for a while now. We desperately need a 10 to replace Mata and Lingard.

That's gotta be Solskjaer's most pointless substitution to date, how many touches did he even have once he came on?

Mata was poor but I'm not going to dismiss him based on a short cameo. Lingard was useless and those three subs should have come much earlier... at least let them have a chance to get warmed up and into the flow of the game. He's still a skilled technical player and a few missed passes and a poor free kick doesn't mean he's suddenly too old to play.

He had a fair few, but, as usual, all of his passes were sideways and the two times he played it forward one was a terrible cross to no one with the GK easi!y catching it, and the other was a horribly weighted through ball that was more of a pass to the opposition defender.

Two more years of Mata getting minutes in every fecking game... He's nailed on as a starter vs Palace. Hopefully he'll realize that he's done at this level and become a part of our coaching staff at some point during the season.

Why did we extend his contract? Much rather see any of the kids coming on in his place.

Supposed to provide technical quality, he had two moments to do it last night, one from deep with a cross and he just punts straight to the GK. The other one in the very last minute, could have played a striker in and it was just a terrible pass.

Immensely likeable, and definitely a great figure to have around the club, but on the pitch he's been done at this level since 16/17. If it wasn't for far more pressing issues and the managerial merry-go-round that we've become since he was signed, he'd have been gone a few seasons ago.

Nah he can be a decent starter for a team in Spain or Italy. He’d be good enough for one of the mid table teams there where he’d get more time on the ball.

I wish I could get a 2 year contract for being a nice guy. I couldn't believe we gave him 2 years with the option of a 3rd, I know Ole cites him, Young and Matic as experience due to our young team, but experience is worthless if you're useless on the pitch and all 3 of those are completely past it at this level.

Serie A is the league for him at this point IMO, I think even back in Spain he'd find La Liga too quick for him.
