In the league he is great. In the CL except that game against Real Madrid he's been crap.

He had the worst xG discrepancy out of all attackers in Europe last season. He'll need more than that to redeem himself

Eugh. Why can’t you just say that he’s been poor in the CL?
Because it is only half of the story. We suck in the CL final rounds whenever we play with three real midfielders. And then not only Lewy sucks but all other offensives, too.

When he scores 20 goals against an English opposition over 2 games then IL rate him, haha, only messing. Great player

I assume the post referenced his league stats. He had 33 xG last season but scored only 22. That's the biggest discrepancy of any striker in Europe. Could be down to poor finishing but if you look at his stats from previous seasons it seems more likely that this is just down to variance (bad luck, good goalkeeping). No one else had a discrepancy of more than 5. Apart from a certain Lionel Messi who outperformed his xG by 10. Which is his case we can mostly put down to this his finishing abilities as he has been converting his chances at an above average rate thoughout his career.

Is there any striker who hasn't been "extremely shit" in the KO stage if Lewandowski is supposed to be crap?
Benz has a good record, but he had the luxury of playing with CR so he could have off games without hurting his team too much.

My whole point is why can’t people actually discuss football and reasons why he may have had a poor season or declining rather than talking about magical expected goals? It’s like people don’t properly watch football anymore they are too busy looking at stat sites

Playing with Ronaldo has limited Benzema's output. Not the other way around.
Check out his CL stats at Lyon

5 goals in 2 league games but he's finished, etc.
I actually rate Lewandowski quite highly, but this is a bit comical. Two of those goals were penalties, if three goals in two games against mid table opposition is proof of greatness then there are dozens of world class strikers out there.

Why not use more precise language (and stats to back it up) when you have the chance? I watch Lewandowski every week and I don't see any signs of him declining really. His xG numbers from last season were the highest he has ever hit meaning he still gets in great positions. He didn't put as many of them away as he usually does but my best guess would be that this was just a statistical anomaly and his numbers will revert back to the mean.

I didn't mean his output, he isn't the #1 option on his team which allows him to have more off games with Real still advancing because someone (mostly Ronaldo) else steps up.

I loath that xG stuff. It's awful.

Imagine, in a thread dedicated to evaluating a player's performance, being discouraged from using stats. Because it's bad for football. Or something.

It's about as comical as saying that he's done.

Actually for the sake of this thread I've decided to run through statistics of some forwards* of top clubs in Europe. I've picked those who sort of made sense, naturally it's all gonna vary given that some of the clubs are in and out of the CL. I didn't count minutes/GPM because honestly I cannot be arsed, just raw statistics, if somebody wants to expand on it then be my guest.

X - Games total - Goals total - Goals in the knockout stages
Lewandowski (BVB & Bayern) - 80 - 53 - 17
Aguero (Atleti & City) - 68 - 37 - 9
Kane (Spurs) - 19 - 14 - 2
Mbappe (Monaco & PSG) - 25 - 14 - 8
Cavani (PSG) - 59 - 34 - 5
Suarez (Ajax & Barca) - 53 - 21 - 11
Aubameyang (BVB) - 32 - 15 - 3
Griezmann (Sociedad & Atletico) - 54 - 21 - 6
Dybala (Juve) - 35 - 11 - 5
Costa (Atleti & Chelsea) - 28 - 11 - 5
Benzema (Lyon & RM) - 112 - 60 - 17
Piguain (RM, Napoli & Juve) - 75 - 23 - 7

So, as you can see, even Benzema who's considered great in the CL has the same amount of knockout goals and just 7 overall more with 32 more games, check Aguero, Griezmann, Suarez or Cavani's stats to see how shit they actually perform in the knockout stages, clubs like Atleti, Juve or City have been playing in the CL year in year out too, getting out of groups most of the time (hehe City). Those bolded are for those who have played 50+ games in the CL for their clubs.

By watching football. The day somebody came up with that.. Thing.. Was a black day for football.
I'll give you an example:
I don't follow Bundesliga so can't comment on Lewa, but I watch lots of Barca games and think Suarez had awful finishing recently.
Someone else claims that he watched every Barca game too and that Suarez's finishing was decent.

What now? End of the discussion?

No, it's not just about Lewa. It seems like people just look at the stats without even watching games, especially xG. And you know what they say about stats, it's like a bikini.

Fully agree. It’s yet another modernization which is Americanizing football. Just leave it the fcuk alone
Yup. It's like football decided to take all the worst stuff from American sports, ton of stats and ton of commercials to the point that football is something in between commercials.

It's less a question of americanizing and more about applying intelligence to the sport. All xG does in this context is suggest Lewandowski might have had weak finishing last season, what you do with that piece of data is up to you, no one is stopping you from using your observations to put it into context or argue against it.

I hate the idea that penalties count less.

They take skill to score. Ask Messi for example or Pogba. Penalties are not easy by an means despite being an easier chance to score.
