Found it strange many wanted him signed to play in Fergies midfield 2. Could he have performed there? I only saw him deliver world class performance’s as a pure 10. Fergie wasn’t really using one if I recall around that time.
I think most people wanted him to play as 10 with Rooney playing ahead of him as main striker. Berbatov was very hit and miss, while Hernandez was a total unknown.

It was always like that. For example Shevchenko winning instead of Ronaldinho, Cannavaro in 2006, Ronaldo in 2002 and so on. Only during the merge with Fifa award, it went to best/most popular player.
Shevchenko winning makes zero sense if you use the MVP standard, Deco was clearly the best player of a treble winning team (not to mention it was with Porto) and had a great first half of 04/05 season at Barcelona. He also made the EC final with Portugal. There is no valid explanation for him being only second.

Yeah, Deco should have probably won it that year. Shevchenko kind of deserved it too, for being the best player and top scorer in Serie A while winning what was widely considered the best league in the world.

Saying that, Ronaldinho was arguably the best player in the world though.

It would come full circle if he joined our coaching staff, finally completing his long anticipated move to United.

IMO nothing arguable about Ronaldinho, he was a clear a standout as I remember. That's why I feel that the award is woefully inconsistent, if you want to award based on trophies do it consistently at least.

Interesting to note that Deco's case virtually mirrors Sneijder, treble winners that lost the international trophy in the final game. Differences were that Sneijder completely fell apart during the first half of 2010/11, while Deco prospered even though he had to adapt to playing as a CM at Barcelona with much greater defensive responsibilities instead of a #10. Oh, and as good as Shevchenko was then, he was nowhere near peak Messi that Sneijder competed with.

Under a tree.
That summer of 2009 when we sold Ronaldo and didn't bother including Robben and/or Sneijder in any deal :(

Should have got him and Robben in the Ronaldo deal. Would have softened the blow massively!

I thought he had already retired. Weirdly was apart of a Singapore consortium trying to buy Blackpool last time I heard of him.

The peak Rooney with Sneijder supplying him :(.

A peak Sneijder now would cost ~200m.

So much this. Two of my favorite players ever and would have been perfectly suited to strengthen our areas of need. Both immediately went on the be among the best in the world over the next 5 years.

Remember when we bought him from Real Madrid for 15 million € in the last few days of market  What a steal that was (same was for Samuel and Cambiasso, Cuchu came for free actually)

I suppose it has recently, with Modric winning it.
Not 'recently', its original purpose was to honour the player who was deemed to have performed the best over the previous year. Not the "best player in the world", whatever that is.

We all love United
His transfer thread here was

Some of us even turned up watching an Inter friendly just to know what he would say after the game and whether he’s coming. It was really obvious United wanted him and he wanted to come but not sure why the deal didn’t go through

Nah, it’s for the best footballer that year. In 2010 that was Messi by a landslide.

Who did? Who does?
TBH we all know that Ibrahimovic is a strong-willed individual that doesn't shy away from conflict or confrontations but Van Der Vaart was the golden boy of that Ajax team and treated like a prince.

In the end, only one of them ended up really fulfilling their promise and VDV got lazy, which is strange cause at the time when Zlatan was sold to Juve, VDV was still considered the bigger talent between the two.

I think it was poor management from Koeman and Louis Van Gaal that they couldn't keep that team in harmony. It had the potential to go as far as the Ajax of last season at least even though it would always get dismantled in the end.

What a huuuge surprise!
Awful personalities for management. I've read Ibra's bio, and, as biased as it is, the part about Koeman, Van Gaal and Pep sure is accurate.

Like a women's gossip magazine, for feck sake. "Sneijder BALLOONS in weight".

It's the beginnings of a gut. No big deal.

they really missed a trick with the headline. Something like "Wesley can't hide his bes-lly" or "Sniejder can't hide-er tummy" would've been better.

I even watched Inter's pre season training to try and see what his body language was like
I'll never forgive that friendly vs England for getting cancelled. He was supposed to sign for us when he flew down for that match. Such a depressing summer.

That's the one transfer saga that will always hurt.

These type of threads commenting on someone's weight always make me laugh because the people having a pop are probably a bit tubby themselves.
