He just can't stay fit and I'm not sure why. Could be due to lack of professionalism or his body could just be made of glass like most of the defenders we've signed in the last few years.
Many players just don't get back to their best after an injury he had and their body isn't the same either.

Good summary, but should Man Utd be content with a 'quite good' first team player when his predecessors were fantastic LB's?
Evra and Irwin aside, I don’t remember any top class LB’s playing for United since I’ve been watching football.
I think we have far bigger issues than Shaw and we need to take care of these weaknesses first before thinking about replacing him.

More Ashley Young. fecking brilliant.

Shaw needs replacing. Can't be trusted to stay fit and not even that good when he is fully fit.

Young cant run for 90 minutes, put Tuanzebe in there and hope for the best. At least we will be developing another prospect.

He's not a left back but will do the job, play Dalot there.

Anyone but Young - massive step backwards if he starts for us, ever.

Rather Romero over Young

Good luck for him to recover well but I'm going to bet we won't miss him much in this month. He's not doing anything spectacular anyway.

No big loss. Though I will prefer if it was someone else that's not Young to replace him. Maybe Dalot will give us the attacking impetus we badly needed.

I'm more concerned about Young finding his way back into the team now Shaw's injured.

Young at his best vs Shaw at his best is a close call tbf. The problem is that when young is playing bad he is really bad.

Lets hope our captain has found some form

Play Tuanzebe and go 3 at the back

De Gea

Lindelof Tuanzebe Maguire

AWB Fred Pogba Andreas James
Greenwood Rashford
Looks a decent team that, to be honest, although I'd have Martial over Greenwood.

Our issue is Young's not been at his best for years and being 34 now it looks unlikely he'll recapture his old form, he's definitely better at LB than RB at least.

Needs replaced in Summer, problem is we need about 3 other positions prioritised before that.

Young is past his best but he's decent and reliable cover at LB, I think at lot of people overreact about him. It is time for us to start looking at replacements for Shaw though.

Decent backup, that's about it. When he leaves for a midtable club in a few years he'll do a solid job wherever he goes but won't stand out.

The man did a sprint that most other left backs do 20 times a game and he’s out for a month. Jesus.

His replacement for the next month is a 34 year old ex winger. I think that highlights why United are where currently are. 6th last season and worried we might finish lower than 6th this season...

His okay. Is okay good enough for us? It may be okay for now while we we have more glaring issues. His allowed to go under the radar. He will eventually get replaced when the club get their act together. Most probably never. So he’ll most likely be on course for a testimonial

Heinze was much better than Shaw. Those three combined will take you back to 1993, 25-26yrs. That's as far back as my personal recollection goes. So he's the worst first choice LB we've had in my entire time following United.

So, official then - Youngy back in the 11 just three weeks into the new season. Our squad depth is disgusting.

New LB next summer, Shaw to be the 'squad option'/Young replacement. Young released. Fingers crossed.

Pulling a hammy can happen to anyone, come the feck on now. He sprinted up and down that left side all of last season without pulling one.

That was the first time I’d seen him do a proper full pitch sprint. He does short bursts yes but his first proper one did him in.

The guy was told not to run full out in a pre-season test.

His hamstring is obviously an issue & going into the season with Ashley Young as his cover is even more proof to what a poor window we had.

He can not be relied upon as a first choice full back & even when playing most attacks end at his feet.

I know I've seen him do lung-bursting runs from the opposition half back to our box when we've been countered against. Hamstring injuries are also more likely to occur while accelerating or decelerating, so I don't really think the length of the sprints have much to do with it.

That's a lot of conjecture.

It was confirmed that he had a niggle around that time, which was likely why he was probably told not to give 100% in that one session. It's been 4 years since last he pulled a hamstring, there's nothing to suggest that he has an obvious problem.

Irwin, evra, shaw - Spot the odd one out. Had such high hopes for this guy but don't think he is ever going to fulfill that early potential.
That coupled with his fondness for the treatment table means its yet another position we should be thinking about upgrading.

Ridiculous opinion.
You think there's a lot in it? Young has had the worst individual games and can be more untidy (no surprise given he might actually try and beat a player or put a cross in) but I prefer his attitude and the fact he occasionally offers something going forward. Defensively I don't see much between them, not least because the days of wingers looking to beat the fullbacks are gone and so often not a lot is asked of them.

Neither's good enough of course.

Wonder if it's the new high intensity game (that we've played against Wolves and Chelsea only to be fair, couldn't see the same intensity against Palace) that's taking its toll. Martial pulled out with a muscular injury too, no?

It's so hard to trust him for a season. We should sign one more LB who is more than just back up.

Some of the comments are very harsh, almost like Shaw did it on purpose.

This. There is bad tone to some of the posts due to disappointment.

I always expected our lack of depth to be exposed, but not at this early stage. This injury wouldn't be half the blow if we had just signed a backup/starter option at left back. Now we forced to play either an aged winger (Young), a rightfooted wingback (Dalot) or a very limited right back (Darmian) at left back. There is absolutely no excuse for not signing another left back in one of the last 4 or 5 windows. The lack of foresight is appalling and embarrasing for a club of our size and wealth.

I guess they genuinely believe Young is an adequate replacement.
