James Robson: Man Utd have left Ole with a bloated & imbalanced squad wasting over £1m p/w in wages

Ole's turning things around in spite of brain dead Ed. If he does go, he'll leave the club in a better position for his successor than the anti-god of football management Mourinho ever did.

For the first time since Fergie retired, the club is finally making correct decisions. Moving forward will be snails pace, but we are moving forward.

Once it became clear that West Ham and Newcastle would not sell us their young central midfielders at any price, there was no point doing a Mourinho style panic buy special and blowing 70 million on Nainggolan, just because we can't be bothered waiting a year for Garner. It's that type of madness that makes the hole we're in much deeper.

This whole mess is not as much Ed's fault as is made out. The moment Moyes dumped Phelan and the backroom team, and replaced them with Steve Round and co. was the moment this club went into free fall. That's like Roy Hodgson taking over at Man City and ditching Arteta to replace him with Neil Lennon. The fans begged Ed for Van Gaal, then begged for Jose after that, So Ed just granted the fans their wish.

James Robson is a twat. Ole is a step in the right direction and is getting a lot of things right quickly. Even if he fails, the likes of James, Greenwood, Chong, Gomes will be experienced PL players for the next manager, and some of the Mourinho nonsensicle disasters will have been offloaded.
There are other options on the market than paying £50m for a CM who was 1) injured and 2) had less than 10 first team appearances. And now because we didn’t buy anyone we have no quality in CM. Solskjaer seems to be refusing to use Matic as well now.

It’s exactly the same thing up top. To the point that Martial is potentially injured and the only replacement available is youth players, who’s going to be on the bench to replace Greenwood? Why are we relying on 17 year old who hasn’t play 90 minutes in the first team? It’s suicide for a club the size of United.

I’m all for getting rid of dross but not to the point where we don’t replace any of them. Herrera and Fellaini gone, not replaced. Lukaku gone not replaced and we still try to get rid of Sanchez. All this while we still have 7 CBs and Darmian who hasn’t played regularly for 2 years.

If you asked any fans who they wanted gone it would be Darmian, Rojo, Young and Jones. All have stayed.

Every decision made is too slow and buying Maguire, AWB and James isn’t a good window given what had left. I would say it’s one step forward, two steps back. Next summer De Gea and Pogba will be gone so we will be even further away than we are now.

He’s made a decent dent in the issues I think. Lukaku, Sanchez and Fellaini all gone, happy with that.

Few more to move on but that’s a very good start.

If you remove deadwood, you have to replace it with something. Replacing it with young, brittle wood is the same as old, broken down wood...it's a temporary fix until you address it properly.

United's attacking line is Rashford, Martial, James, Pereria, Greenwood...that's barely 40 goals across the league and that's being a little generous.

Won't be surprised if the delay of DeGea s renewal was connected in some way to Sanchez departure.

But they already have 6 in 3 games...

Pogba has never really been fully mentally here. Bring in Maddison and you might have an instant improvement. De Gea has been a liability for 6 months now and he probably needs a new challenge. I honestly don't think we'll struggle to replace him. Kepa is already chosen ahead of him in the Spain nations team. Allison and Ederson are as good as De Gea but on half the money De Gea gets.

We badly need a central mid. Lingard or Pereira will be given till Xmas to stake a claim. If they don't seize the chance then we'll probably bid for McGinn or Longstaff in January. If they do stake a claim then we've saved 50 million for that position

3 games in to the new season is a bit early to be playing the blame game through the press

You misunderstand this entire debacle.

He's not an arrogant guy mistakenly thinking he knows better than his club's manager what will take this club to the top.

He's a money man who's been hired by the Glazers to keep us moderately competitive whilst saving as much money as possible.

It's all about money, and that comes from above Woodward's deck.
This is the truth. Ed is doing exactly what he has been told to do. He is given a brief by the Glazers and follows it. I’m not sure he deserves the flak he gets if this comes from above.

I don’t like what he does but he certainly is only following his job description like the rest of us do.

You know who to blame! Time to start blaming.

It's a bigger deal to me that Ole has been given the backing to support the youth and dump the deadwood than if he got a tonne of support in the transfer market in his first window. It's definitely time to support him I believe. He's being super brave.

He's cleared some, but not all, of the deadwood. It can't be done all at once. And although we can still question individual decisions like starting Lingard against Palace, he's making some of the moves we've been demanding a United manager make.

Had two pk's been converted and a relatively manageable save by De Gea been made, we'd be on 9 points after 3 games. There are some worrying signs -- the two missed pk's and the last concession to Palace -- but there are positive signs as well.

That's why it's a stupid thinking, when a poster comment "well, it's not my money", when the club paying players on undeserved wages.

What positive signs? If we talk about the missed penalties and the non save by DeGea then we should also talk about how we got dominated by Chelsea in the first half and how they hit the woodwork twice and how Degea pulled of two tremendous saves. We were lucky to go in at half time without conceding a goal against Chelsea.

When Pep came into City he was allowed to pile up all the trash he didn't want and chuck it out no matter the cost to the club, we have held Darmian hostage for like 5 transfer windows because we want £5M for a player that never plays, surely even Ed realizes that given we only paid £12M for him 4 years ago, he's depreciated considerably due to the aforementioned never playing, he's not even in the shop window.

Dominated by Chelsea but somehow we created more chances going by expected goals in all 3 games.

I've been pretty amazed at how many seem to think the manager is actually involved in negotiating transfers and contracts.

We did replace Herrera with Scott McT who already looks better than Herrera.
What in the hell? First of all, McTominay was already here, he didn't replace anyone. He moved from cover to starter and left a void behind him, solving no problems. Secondly, no way in hell is he better than Herrera.

But look at your expectations of the player we will sign.

How does James replace Lukaku??? Both play different positions. One is an international striker who averages over 20 goals a season. The other just looks like a pace merchant from the Championship. There is no comparison of quality. No matter how Lukaku played for us he is certainly a better player.

Then you want Maddison, £90m is the minimum he will cost. He simply isn’t worth that. This obsessions with Longstaff is embarrassing by a lot on here. He hasn’t even played 10 Premier League games, same with McGinn. Manchester United should not be looking at midtable fodder.

Surely most top clubs are wasting that much in wages every week aren't they? All the big teams will have a squad full of players on six-figure salaries.

How can we possibly know at this stage if the youngsters are going to fail? How about getting behind them and enjoying the ride?

These youngsters will be good additions to the team/squad, they're most definitely good enough to play a big part in our season and they actually care about the club.

We thrashed Chelsea 4-0, capped off by a remarkably dominant second half. We actually played very well against a difficult Wolves side -- yes, a side we should have instead beaten and we would have but for a missed pk.

If we are going to lament the negative signs, as we should -- missing two pk's and a De Gea mistake, as well as generally poor play by Lingard -- we should be honest enough to recognize and praise the positive signs as well.

Those year accounts of us were deflated due to non UCL and ofcourse Pool won UCL so they had to pay bonuses but yeah still good work and given we have since sold off Young, Darmian, Lukaku, Sanchez, Smalling etc, I think it'll be very much in control now.

It’s honestly testament to how good of a job Ole has done. He has improved the age profile, quality and depth in the squad whilst spending relatively little and trimming the wage bill.
Gone under the radar but very good work and with some top youth prospects to come in like Garner.

Not sure where else to put this.

@devilish this kind of ties in with what we were discussing in the Bailly thread.

The work Ole and the club has done to reduce the wage bill and move on deadwood is really positive. Obviously Jones is a bit of a mystery in that sense but we are undoubtedly making improvements and look like a far better operating club.

It just goes to show that if you have a man in charge of recruitment who does care for the club, and not just his CV/resume, then things don't get out of control when it comes to wages.

Good point.

Lukaku, Sanchez etc departing has taken the wage bill down even further since. Especially Sanchez.

He deserves credit but at the same time, all the players who have been offloaded were easy to do so tbh. Still neither Mata nor Jones should still be at the club

I feel like renewing Mata and Matic for three years was a mistake

and Jones obviously

but other that that Ole's done a great job of trimming the fat

We haven't yet done the big mistake we've done with Sanchez. However I can't see that big of an improvement. We've overpaid during Ole's first transfer window, last summer transfers were a shambles We didn't secure Sancho despite courting him for 6 months, our major signing plays like 5 minutes every game and we haven't added a first teamer despite we clearly need a CB, a RW and a STK. This year we've got involved in the SL mess which was a PR disaster of epic proportions.

Bailly is not Jones but he's not that far off either.

a- he's incredibly injury prone
b- he's quite frankly not good enough
c- we really need a CB. Considering that we've got 5 CBs already with 3 being injury prone, then freeing some space (and salary) would have made sense

I repeat I am not blaming that on Ole. What happened in the past year or so clearly show that Ole is having far less say then a Sir Alex would have.

Don't we have like 25% reduction in wages for players if we fail to qualify for CL factor in that these figures aren't impressive atall but since then we have removed some Deadwood so it would be interesting to see the current wages with complete CL bonuses built in.

There was a reported reduction of £45m for the 19/20 season due to missing out on the UCL. Liverpool's wages without the reduction is £41m higher than ours according to Martyn Ziegler and we've since got a number of players off the wage bill, which include Lukaku, Darmian, Young and even Sanchez who looked to be difficult to shift due to his mammoth wage. So as things stand, I'd say our wage bill for the 2020/21 season will also be lower than Liverpool's who have added Thiago.
