I fully agree with this departure. We should have sold him last season though
Gotta say wow....!!!
Solskjaer isn't faffing about in clearing the deadwood....Let's not forget Fellaini was shipped out double quick back in January.

My theory on Darmian (player of the month out of the gate) was that he looked good initially because the league was still getting up to speed. Once he had to deal with the proper EPL intensity he was found wanting.

This transfer comes 3 years late but better late than never i guess.
Hope he can get his career back on track.
Good luck to Darmian.

Hard to believe he's slowly hitting his 30's. Pointless player like many in LvG era, but there was one game if I remember, when he was forced to play as left back against Ajax and was quite reliable.

Also he's an average player. If things go well and he's playing with confidence he's decent to good. If the team isn't doing well and he loses confidence he turns to shit

Like all average players

He was always there or thereabouts reliable. Never spectacular, but never the worst on the pitch, and what he lacked as a ' modern attacking FB ' he more than made up for as a solid defender.

I can think of only one poor game - at Spurs when he got hooked, although it could have been any of the ten outfielders that was taken off because that day we gave as shit a performance as we had for maybe ten years - including when Moyes was around.

Glad he's found a job somewhere else, because unlike most people on here, I thought he was good enough to be a reliable squad player for us, although I can well understand that now having AWB to go with Shaw he's never going to be a regular starter for us so might as well move on now and enjoy what's left of his career.

I can't believe some posters are upset about the fee. I'd have paid Parma 10m to take him.
Harsh as it sounds, I very much agree.

You can stand screaming at the rain but that won't make it stop. No matter how much we wanted millions and millions for him it was never gonna happen. Best to get him off the wage bill now than wait in vain for someone willing to shed out top dollar for a player we clearly don't want.

Nothing against Darmian, seems a nice bloke. It ain't worked out for him though and it never remotely looked like working out for him either.

That fee though
Despite everything, Darmian is still good enough for midtable Serie A club for 3 seasons at least. No way his value is lower than 7 or 8 million.
Just checked transfermarkt and it's 9 million actually!

Woodward strikes again.

Now it is the market and not transfermarkt that decides transfer fees. We have tried to shift him for years with no buyers. Incredible bashing Woodward on this as he is finally letting the deadwood go.

If we held out for £9 million Darmian would be at United until next summer, eating away the wage bill and blocking the path to the first team for youngsters. Nobody is gonna shell out 9 million for a player who can negotiate a freebie soon.

Sanchez, Smalling, Darmian all gone is good news indeed... but only if you ignore the fact we've received a combined sum of 4.5 million for them  Pretty much free transfers, not to mention that Sanchez and Smalling might even come back next season.
Why don't Liverpool have any troubles offloading their crap like Ings for some decent fees? City sold Danillo for 25 million or something just last week.

EDIT: Danilo was sold for 35 million !!

And if I ever hear again 'Glazers are good businessmen' the Darmian transfer will always be there to remind the world how utterly incompetent they are for allowing an amateur to deal with transfers!

I'm glad he's gone and hopefully his departure will open up space for someone from the u23s.

We probably did lose a few million in selling him this season rather than last. But you have to take into consideration our stance on negotiating out-going transfers had changed. We were no longer gonna give our players away for a pittance. Inter bid £54m for Lukaku but we stayed firm and eventually received our asking price.

With their wages they are worth nothing in this market. No clubs that want them can afford shelling out big fees and also cover big wages.

The realistic way to look at this is shit loads saved in wages for players that would not play many games.

Isn’t that just what happened here?

I agree with the gist of your message I just found that part a bit amusing ;)

Could have got about 10-15m for him if we sold him last 2 windows or so but we kept asking for something like 20m. Now with him being out of contract next season we had to sell him for what, 1.5 ?

We did give him away but the agressive stance paid dividends with Lukaku.

We’re paying the price for years of mismanagement. Were we really every going to get £15-20m for Darmian? The guy is a footballing irrelevance. Just be glad he’s gone & pray we don’t make the same mistakes any longer.

He’s wanted to go back to Italy for some time. Quite liked him as a player, was 6/10 most weeks and was an intelligent defender. But he never really got to grips with the premier league, he found facing some of our more pacy and powerful wingers very difficult and never hit the heights he did for Italy.

Huge kudos to him for that great display in the 2017 final against Ajax, and best of luck to him.

Good luck to him.

I expect Parma will make a very nice profit for themselves on him in the next couple of windows.

I forgot he was in the squad, I feel bad for him he was always a top professional never made any complains about playing time, always available when needed (not very often) and he wasted 6 years of his career here, probably his peak years. He was an international with Italy and now he is negotiating a 2 year deal with option of a further one with Parma.

We really damaged him, should had let him go at least a couple of years ago when it was clear he wouldn't play at all.

Glad he's gone. Daily reminder that Juve offered us over £10m for him last summer, but Ed stupidly rejected it, demanding almost £20m instead. Genius move.

Was never his biggest fan but felt sorry for him these past two seasons since he wasted those years on the bench when everyone knows that he should have been sold. Wish him all the best!

Wish him luck, he wasted his career at United sadly. Should have been sold but stingy Ed haggled for a few million here and there and now sold him for pittance.

Transfermarkt is rubbish for valuations. We just got rid of a 29 year old player who we should have sold after his first season here when he was at his peak. Getting any money for him is a win.

The main thing is that he will soon be off our books. He is earning something like 60k/week to do nothing.

People saying we could've sold him for 10M last summer, but fecked up....but there's actually no real evidence to support that, is there? Other than tabloid gossip I mean. There can be a lot of reasons why he didn't leave before, not least the previous manager wanted to keep him (inexplicably), or his wage demands were too high, when coupled with the transfer fee. I mean, I am all for bashing the piss poor management of the club, but sometimes people just take swings without any actual facts. They have already made their mind up.

Glad he's another piece of dead wood out the door. That's another 3M a year or so saved on wages. Plus the 5M or so we've saved on Smalling's wages. And the 9M we've saved on Sanchez wages, 6m we've saved on Fellaini's, and 5M odd on Herrera, 8.5M on Lukaku, 6M on Valencia, and the 3M loan fee from Roma for Smalling, is a 45.5M p/a savings on wages. Then we've added around 16M in Maguire, AWB, and James, and perhaps an extra 3M for Rashford's renewal, we have conservatively shaved 25M or so off our wage bill. The club has fecked up a lot, but at least something has been done right this summer. Assuming they reinvest over January and then next summer.

One thing I didn't calculate in the wages adjustment is the 25% reduction most players face for no CL qualifications. So our wage bill should be down even further.

He has 10 months left on his contract and the value £9 million, is when he has some milage left on a contract. No one is going to pay that when they could get him for free next season. Just getting shut of him frees up a squad place for a youngster to get a chance. Its not as if he was going to play anyway.
