Should we renew De Gea's contract?

Would be nice if we had a commanding presence between the posts, always liked me a leader keeper like VDS, Schmeichel (I don't remember him though was too young) or Kahn.

But I reckon if we get going and start being up there with the best teams in England and Europe, De Gea might rediscover his Godlike form on the wings of buzz inside the team but that's a big if and I wouldn't count on it.

So yeah if we found a good goalkeeper that's also a leader to replace him I'd let him go even though I'll always have a soft spot for David.

Regardless of his current siutation, United clearly need to get him to sign the deal. Simply to make sure that he either says at the club after this season or we can get a decent transfer fee for him (Especially when getting the likes of Oblak are going to cost in the region of £100 Million) if he wants to leave.

However in light of his shocking decline in form, OGS needs to have the balls to drop him in favour of Romaro if he refuses to step up his game going forward. Because I am getting the impression (alongside a lot of other players) than he is playing as if he feels he as a god given right to be first choice, no matter how crap he performs on the field, like conceding goals from strikers that find it completely unable to score goals whatsoever.

I mean don't get me wrong, I feel that De Gea should stay at the club and I still believe he can turn it around. But its clear to see that in light of the Glazers refusal to invest in the quality/competition the squad badly needs to get back to its best, players like De Gea need to step up their game and fight for their places. And if they are unwilling to do it themselves, then OGS needs to be willing to drop them from the team until they finally do.

Should have sold him in the Summer, why are we trying to keep players who don't want to play for us?

He's on the decline too and the fact that he cannot play with his feet is a problem.

Let him go !!
Overpriced and really not too motivated it seems. It seems he is always just about to leave unless he gets more money.

By all accounts it isn’t up to us: DDG refuses to sign. If that’s true and he’s been auditioning for his next job, he needs to up his game or his next posting will be a step down.

Looks like he wont sign and we will just put Henderson in goal. Probably should have sold him last year in hindsight

If he only wants to stay because of huge money then he should go, he is the highest paid keeper in the world as it stands.
Henderson is being groomed for the top spot anyway so if his levels are good this season then I have no problem with him stepping in.

De Gea is a weird one. He’s been one of the finest players we have ever had at the club but I’m getting Casillas vibes from him. Casillas declined dramatically a few years after been awarded 2nd place in the Ballon D’Or. Both rely on althletism compared to Buffon / VDS for example who where often more about positioning and composure.

Like some other posters have pointed out he may just be with us for money at this point. In hindsight even as a United fan you see how not going to Madrid may have stopped him going to the next level professionally and personally so possibly his drive diminished.

He’s stuck with us now anyways unless his wage demands and price tag drastically decline to actual market levels based on his current performances.

Not sure what went wrong. The goals he's letting in these days aren't because of a physical decline imo. It's more a significant loss of concentration. That 2nd goal against palace for example, when it's at the near post he never dives for them when he can use his feet to deflect them. It's what used to make him smarter than most keepers. Maybe it's the contract limbo or he has lost motivation not fighting for major trophies in his prime.

After almost single-handedly killing our top 4 chances last season, I thought he might be over the blip.

When you let people like Patrick Van Aanholt beat you at the near post and let the ball literally fly right under your arms, clearly not.

Get rid.

He’s been really low on confidence over the last 18 months.

Given the wages he’s asking for, and the state of our club, I’d rather take our cash and invest in other areas of the squad.

Our biggest contracts and spend are on a CM and a GK. Other clubs tend to have more investment in goal scorers, cause, ya’know, scoring goals is hard.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
Honestly, I'd let him go...

Not so much because of his lack of shot-stopping form, but more because of his distribution, which, at this point, seems almost archaic.

I want a keeper who can spot a pass (even if it's a throw VDS, Schmeichel style), and who can command the game in front of him.

He's past it.

Edit: let's be fair, he's not as good as he was; Lindelof keeps making mistakes and De Gea can't fix them anymore.

I love de Gea, he’s been brilliant for us for years and in terms of reflexes and shot stopping, he’s the best in the world. Watching how other teams are playing now though, I do wonder whether the modern goalkeeper needs to be better with his feet. If we want to rebuild the side and challenge at the top, do we need make a change in nets to allow us to play differently.
My other question, and it’s not one that can be easily answered, is if he’s part of our defensive problems? We’ve been pretty rubbish defensively for quite a long time and de Gea has been the one constant. I remember when Newcastle had Given, they were always awful at the back but he was a great shot stopper, so no one thought the keeper was a problem. Maybe neither are great communicators or don’t command the area well? I don’t know, purely positing a theory.

There is not enough realisation that, whoever we do sign after De Gea, most likely wont be a success. Our history shows this, with Sir Alex only getting it right straight away, with De Gea after Van Der Sar retired.

Goalkeeping is the most scrutinised position on the pitch, because every mistake is highlighted and 9 times out of 10, lead to a goal. Now De Gea may have his best days behind him, or maybe hes going through a tough patch the last 12 months, after being incredibly consistent for 5 years!

You don't lose the natural reactions he has over night. Jose heavily criticised our defence and due to thayt they came under the limelight for last season, especially with the mix and match he was having put in front of him, Scott and Matic in the same game for example.

With a solid foundation in front of him, he will shine again. He is human, confidence affects everyone, but I know, in form, De Gea can pull off saves no keeper in the world can do, and that his his job.

It's so wierd how a goalkeeper who was arguably one of the best suddenly has become so poor. Almost a year now since he had his blip, which might mean it's a permanent decline. And he's pretty young for a goalkeeper.

We should offer him the contract and set a deadline one last time. If he agrees, fair enough. Worst case is we might have to sell him. If he refuses, it's time to bench him and play Romero. Hardly think it'll make a difference now, he's been pretty shite for a while, Romero might be an upgrade at this point.

He's been a great player for us, single handedly saving us so many times. I really want him to get back to his best, but it's looking more and more unlikely these days. And with the style of play, I wouldn't mind if he was moved on.

I dont think thats an option anymore, in January he'll be free to sign to whoever he wants for free so I dont think any club will be willing to pay a decent amount for him. But I will gladly lose him for free if the other option means we got to give him the huge wages he's asking, even renewing him at his current wages will be a bad idea in my opinion. Lets not forgett he is already the best paid GK in the world and he hasn't been playing anything near that level for 18 months now.

If De Gea had arrived at the same time that Sanchez did he would be treated the same as Sanchez and considered a burden that we should get rid asap. He has the backup that he was a worldclass keeper for many years in the past but the reality is he has been shit for 18 months and he is the best paid GK in the world, he should be playing at least like a top 5 GK. Lets forget the option of giving him a new contract with double wages, just offering the same wages he is currently at is a stupid idea.

This place is going to be miserable when DDG is gone and we'll get a replacement that's not nearly as good. We've had it really good as United supporters in regards to goalkeepers but we all still remember those seasons in between Schmeichel and VDS. The goalkeeping inconsistencies cost us titles and watch those inconsistencies skyrocket with DDG gone.

He was the best goalkeeper in the world and he easily could have been at Madrid in his home city competing for the top trophies every season but he's been stuck here going nowhere winning zilch with us instead. That's bound to affect anyone.

After all, money can't fill the void of success.

He looks disillusioned and as a result has lost his motivation. He's developed these concentration issues which I can't remember him ever having in the past.

He needs to move on for his own sake so we can replace him with the next sucker and the circus can continue to roll on.

Let him leave. Makes no sense to pay £200/wk for a keeper no matter how good. He also has a mental/fear issue. Last season against crystal palace he literally let a rolling ball past him afraid to jump at people’s feet... Mourinho would never have let that go but our weak minded coach just indulges him like he does Pogba.

I have never been a big fan of his. Has he made some absolutely unbelievable saves over the years? Most definitely. But as a former keeper myself, I have never been comfortable with his technique, and most of all, his positioning.

For years, raw talent allowed him to be so poor when it comes to the basics. I don't think I have ever seen a keeper who was more agile than him. But once he loses even half a step (as we are starting to see), his agility isn't bailing him out anymore. There was a time where we would expect the unexpected from him. He would make saves that no other keeper in the world would make. The thing is though, most other keepers wouldn't have had to leap that far in the first place.

The video here that the OP posted showed the Messi goal that snuck under him. I've been there and done that myself (mind you, I'm not De Gea). It happens to the best of them. But there was another goal that Messi scored in that game that I thought was even worse. Messi was coming in from the right onto his left foot. All he could shoot at was the far post. So as a keeper, you have to read that and cheat a little that way. When he shoots, De Gea is in the middle of his goal and it goes off the post and in. Most didn't take note of that. I certainly did.

In the past he would have made that save. But now, as he gets a little older, he is losing a little bit of his agility. Not much, but enough so that shots like that are creeping in. De Gea a couple years prior would have saved that.

The problem is that with all his agility, he never learned how to play the position properly. He doens't read the play and find himself where he should be. And don't even get me started on crosses.

Bottom line, De Gea should have been sold a couple of seasons ago. When Madrid were calling I was ready to sell. I saw the writing on the wall and knew what was coming. He will still have some great games, but his heroics will be few and far between. Keepers typically have long careers. I honestly don't see De Gea lasting much more than a 3-4 more years at this level...

Let him go. No room for sentiment in football, he's finished at the top level.

Sorry to say it, but I am also not averse to the idea of Romero replacing him as our starter for the remainder of the season.

He's an all time great for usu but sometimes players need a change of scenery. He's gone through a bad patch after absolute freakish levels of peformances for years. Moving to another may be the thing that he requires to give his career a boost. And you never know, for us as well, it could be the right time to part ways.

Ideally I'd keep him as, like I said, he's a phenomenal keeper and he still could give us 5-6 years of elite level of peformances which we wouldn't find elsewhere. But if his head is elsewhere it may be better for him to go rather than paying him a fortune despite him wanting to be elsewhere and not performing.

He is declining. Reminds me of Sanchez. But De Gea has been average for over a season. He is not world class right now and hasnt been for last 12-18 months. Upsetting the wage structure for him woukd be another bad move

Should have sold him in Summer. Now it’s too late, we either offer him want he wants, or spend 60m+ on another keeper.

Yes. He has been super human for a long time and is now going through a more difficult time form wise.

The way it looks is we will have to replace Pogba and De Gea just to get us back to the sub standard level we are now! These next windows will have to be the best the club has ever produced to get us out of this deep shit we are sinking further into.

We should let him go and let Henderson be first choice. He has been poor for Spain, so all this not motivated for us rubbish is not right. He has just declined sharply.

This was the worry when people were happy with only the 3 signings this year. I don’t see how the club can’t see danger ahead. We’ll be replacing Matic, Young,Pogba and De Gea before even working on the first team players that actually need upgrading. Players like Pogba and De Gea don’t want to be wasting prime world class years in transition.

De gea will be a PSG player next summer with his mate Ander.

Im suprised many of you rate Romero so low that you want to start Henderson or buy a new keeper (given there is so many other positions to fill).

Is he really that average?

I'm sure the club have seen the danger ahead. It's probably why they worked hard to extend Henderson and loan him out to a PL club. Obviously, the club hope he can replace De Gea if he doesn't want to extend his contract and leaves on a free next summer. It's different with Pogba though, as he still has a medium term contract with us (I believe it's 2 years + club option for an extra year). We control if and when he leaves. That means we still have time to replace him.

If De Gea hasn't signed a new contract by the end of this year we should sell him. Henderson is on loan till the summer. We will have to play either Romero, or whatever replacement we buy in January. I'm happy with Romero from January till May; he's been very reliable when I've seen him play.
