Henry could have off days and still look the best player in the Premiership. He had frightening ability. Arguably the best player the Premier League has seen.

Henry for me, Aguero’s great but Henry was electrifying, with the numbers to back it up.

It should be Aguero vs Shearer. And for me, the winner is Big Al.

It wouldn't be a discussion with the numbers and trophies he'd have won if he'd have signed with United.

To think, he even recovered from two horrific injuries and continued banging them in left, right and centre whilst playing in some pretty average Newcy Brown teams. Agüero is amazing, but I don't think he'd get the numbers Shearer did playing in the same teams.

2002/03.

I still wonder how Arsenal never retained the league that season. Not complaining though.

The football they played was incredible, on a different level to Guardiola's City.

Id put Shearer ahead of Aguero, especially considering he did it at Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle. I know one club spent a lot and won the league but he had nowhere near the class of the other two players colleagues around him. I add Drogba to that list as well personally, but Henry tops the lot in terms of strikers.

Henry was at least one level above Aguero - and I really like Aguero. When Aguero Plays against United I fear that he will score and decide the game - when Henry played against United, I feared that he would rip United to shreds.
That sounds like you prefer Aguero.

Unbelievable season from a player to be just as clinical as creative is mad.

Henry was simply magical. Agüero vs Shearer for the second spot.

Henry not just did the scoring, he created a massive amount of chances for his teammates. He is the greatest forward in the premier league history to me, without a doubt. The things I remember the most is his last season playing at Highbury where he was just on a different level to everybody else, and how he carried Arsenal to a CL final, including scoring an incredible solo goal against Madrid.

I think Henry was the perfect forward. Aguero is still an outrageous goalscorer though, having the best minutes to goal ratio in Premier League history. Along with his 170 league goals he's actually served up 44 assists too. For context, Shearer racked up 64 in almost 200 more appearances.

1. Henry
2. Aguero
3. Shearer

OP says greatest PL #9. Henry wasn't quite a #9 though, just an incredible all round footballer. Possibly the best ever in the PL era. That sprint back to make a last ditch tackle sticks in my memory as much as any of his amazing goals. But personally I think there's no equal to Alan Shearer as to best #9 in the PL era. As a pure striker, big Al every day for me. If he had signed for United, his trophy cabinet would be full and ours even fuller than it is already. Aguero and Henry (and quite a few others) are better footballers but Shearer is the greatest #9 in my humble opinion.

I wore my legs down to the knees trying to copy Henry's tricks.
Beautiful player.

As others have pointed out, Henry and Aguero haven’t really played in the same position, so comparison isn’t the best.

However, I cannot think of another number 9 in the PL who was as consistent as Aguero in terms of goals scored and important goals scored...and who was 5’8”. For that reason, I think he beats Shearer. If you are going to compare Aguero with Henry, the difference in their physical statures in a physical league needs to be considered.

Henry, he was magical. Created and scored shit loads of goals. Also no matter where he received the ball, he was always a threat.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Here on the Caf back then it was frequently claimed that RVN was better than Henry. Supposedly Henry choked in big games or something.
It was close for Ruud's first couple of years, although Henry probably shaded it a bit. Ruud was never quite the same after the injury in 04/05 so it was obviously Henry after that.

If it weren't for that injury and he'd stayed at the top longer I'd probably have Ruud in 2nd place ahead of Aguero and Shearer.

Henry easily for me. The real question is who would be 2-5 on ability, durability and meaningful contributions to trophy-winning sides. This:

Shearer
Aguero
Rooney
Van Nistelrooy

But if the question is who was the greatest at peak that's a tough one. I'd still go with Henry by a hair, but you could make a case for any of those five, even Ruud.

Drogba has to be in there somewhere for me.

Henry and Cristiano are the absolute certs for an all-time EPL front three. Third spot would be between Agüero and Suárez depending on whether you prefer longevity or peak level.

Henry > Aguero > Shearer, obviously.
Henry's #1st place doesn't have to explained I believe, and I'd put Shearer just below Aguero - superior goal tally perhaps, but also a fairly limited striker playing in weaker era. Still undisputed #3 though. #4 and #5 would be between Rooney and Suarez. The former for longevity, the latter for peak form.

What about All-time XI of GOATs? No doubt about CR7 as LW in 4-3-3, but I think Henry is one of two contenders for #9 position. It's either him or Ronaldo. I don't think any other PL player would be picked for GOAT XI... Pogba, Kante and Salah could sit on the bench though.

Vast majority of posters picked Henry and the rest failed to produce any arguments in Aguero's favour so I thought we could expand on the debate of PL strikers, and PL legends in worldwide historic context.

I'm not sure why it needs to be considered, considering that Shearer's physique was a bit part of his game that gave him a huge advantage as a player. And we're assessing a player's level, not just his technique.

I’ve seen a few people say this but I’m sure they both played as a number 9? Henry used to drift to the left at times but he was still an out and out centre forward.

Yeah, he used to drift wide but he was #9. Pires was their left winger, Henry and Bergkamp was their strikers.

I always think of #9 as a synonym for “target man” or “old fashioned centre-forward” so I don’t consider either Agüero or Henry 9s even if they were their teams’ main striker.

Aguero excels in City because they are always close to the opposing box. When the game gets crazy and he's far away from goal Henry had much more in his locker than Aguero. That's why he hasn't done anything for Argentina, they don't territorrially dominate the games. For this bigger versatility I nominate Henry.

Red Card for Casemiro!
If you're close to the opposition box and are looking for a finish, you'd like Aguero to be your man.
But if you're looking at a more consistent, unpredictable and all-round threat from anywhere and everywhere in the opposition's half, I'd pick Henry.

While I agree with you in general, Agüero actually has a slightly better goalscoring record for Argentina than Henry does for France (without the benefit of having qualifiers against Malta, Cyprus, Lithuania and the Faroe Islands). His record for Argentina is not nearly as bad as people think.
