Should we renew De Gea's contract?

This was the worry when people were happy with only the 3 signings this year. I don’t see how the club can’t see danger ahead. We’ll be replacing Matic, Young,Pogba and De Gea before even working on the first team players that actually need upgrading. Players like Pogba and De Gea don’t want to be wasting prime world class years in transition.

De gea will be a PSG player next summer with his mate Ander.

PSG have already signed Navas

He might be off to PSG, following his mate Ander. That would be some coup for the frenchies.

I'm fine with letting De Gea go, so long as he's replaced with top class quality. I feel he's done his time here. What's the long game anyway? Doesn't look like he wants to finish his career here. He's been great for us but great players come and go...

I feel like we're watching the football transfer world eat itself here. AFAIK Club financial models have always used transfer fee + wages amortized over contract length to decide if a transfer makes sense financially. The only logical thing to do for the players then is to run down their contract, minimize the transfer fee and maximize the player wages. It wouldn't surprise me if De Gea moved to Juve for 500k p/w on a 5 year contract for example because that "only" translates to 130 million in cost for Juve for the contract. If they were to buy a keeper of De Gea's quality, the transfer itself would cost something ~100M and with wages of 200k p/w the deal will cost something like 150-160 million in total.

We've ended up with the clubs and players playing a zero-sum game and so far the players seem to have the upper hand. As a football fan, you'd prefer to have the clubs have more power than players / agents, but maybe that's not something we should be rooting for.

He’s no longer No1 but wants to be paid ridiculous money. Sell him.

I’ve been saying for a while that the inflation in transfer fees is going to lead to more players seeing out their contracts. Already begun, but it’s goibg to become a theme in the coming years. Look at Spurs, there’s a few running contracts down. I think De Gea will do the same, and Juve love a free and have a decent but replaceable keeper.
We’re actually quite well placed in that we’ve got 2 good prospects in Henderson and Perreira, and a very good, experienced number 2 in Romero. If he did go, we mightn’t need to buy.

Yes we should, he's earned our trust. Lots of players hit a blip and come back stronger for it. Given his age and his capabilities at the peak of his powers we have to believe he'll be back to his best hopefully soon. Hes the last player we should give up on.

For this reason alone we should be moving him on, never mind the fact that other people like myself believe he is in decline as well.

Nope. Rather than give him £350k pw, let him go in January for whatever we can get and activate Oblak’s buyout clause. We end up with a better keeper.

My opinion on the matter is that I believe DDG will leave.

I also think that Romero isn't good enough to be our number 1 and a lot of fans will realise this when he gets more game time.

Also, I haven't seen enough of Henderson to know if he is capable of being our number 1. Is he considered a top talent? England's future number 1? Same kind of level as Pickford do we think? Genuinely curious.

I guess there is a chance that we will simply buy a ready made replacement for DDG too.

I agree on De Gea and Romero. Romero is a great number two getting games here and there when you want to rest your number 1 or because of injury can play a few games in a row, but he isnt someone you want starting all your games. He was never consistent in his career, he wont suddenly be now. As soon as he plays more often, mistakes creep in and you realise he is a good number 2 only, almost perfect in that sense, because he doesnt moan and does his job well.

With Henderson, not sure, i would wait this season to see how he does. I dont think he is worse than Pickford, but his ceiling nobody knows. If we cant get Oblak, i would give him a shot rather than spend 50m or someone just as good or slightly better, when Henderson is younger and homegrown.

The same Henderson who made a mess of an easy ball for Chelsea's first goal?
What? So you expect no keeper to make errors ever?

I recall De Gea making many errors early in his career, look how he ended up.

Where the grass is greener.
I admire people’s faith that we’ll replace De Gea well, I’ll be very nervous when he leaves, because I don’t trust the club to pay the money needed to upgrade like we’ll need to.

This team has so many issues, it’s scary.

Should we extend? Yes.

Will DDG accept our offer? Probably not, and who could blame him?

I’m not sure whether I’m not arsed about him leaving due to the fact he’s been a bit shit recently, or whether I’ve started to develop a deep sense of apathy.

It's starting to look a difficult decision isn't it?

This time last year 400k looked a snip and we were desperate for him to sign.

Recently his form has dipped and it seems to be hanging around a bit longer than we expected. Is this just a prolonged bad bit of form or a permanent recess?

Can we afford to offer him another 4/5 year deal on 400k a week, only to replace him again very soon? We CANNOT be left with another Sanchez situation.

I think we need to give it until Christmas, if he's still not signed and not recovered his form then we cut our losses and move on.

I'm not too bothered anymore. He's still a great shot stopper even factoring in his mistakes of late. I think his inability to come of his line, for either crosses or to clear his lines, plus his distribution isn't top class. I think the modern keeper role has evolved. If he stays than happy days, if he goes, I'm not that bothered to be honest. I think at this stage we have bigger issues than our keeper.

Happy days if he stays? In his current form (or better term 'state') and the reported wages, it is madness.

Im suprised many of you rate Romero so low that you want to start Henderson or buy a new keeper (given there is so many other positions to fill).

Is he really that average?
Nah, he's been very good whenever he's played.

Yep let him go to Juve. We have such a good track record of replacing players that I'm sure we will buy a top GK next summer. He's never been the same GK for Spain that he is for United, so him being dropped from the NT is no surprise. What will happen is he will probably leave to Juve and regain his top form. Then this thread will turn into a b!*h fest about how useless our board is and why we didn't extend him.

So we should keep him so he doesnt regain form at Juve and that our fansbase subsequently doesnt go into meltdown? Good plan

He may or may not come good here or anywhere else, but currently, him getting that contract is a joke. Should have sold him last season, but since we are rarely proactive, this happens. We love to wait until it is too late

No, we keep him because he's still a top 5 GK. Look at the comparison in shots against and goals allowed last season, you can swap any of these GK with De Gea and the way we played last season none would do better.

De Gea - 184 / Goals - 54
Leno - 158 / Goals - 42
Kepa - 125 / Goals - 39
Allison - 100 / Goals - 22
Ederson - 83 / Goals - 23
Oblak - 127 / Goals - 27
Ter Stegen - 123 / Goals - 31

thats your opinion. Most of them would have done better, guys like Oblak, Ter Stegen and Alisson are better than him right now and last season. Less mistakes and miles better on the ball. A top GK makes a huge difference, De Gea isnt a top GK right now. If you still believe that, then you also still believe Alexis is a top player. They all make mistakes, but some do less and save more, which De Gea was a master of, but isnt currently. On top of that, his weaknesses on the ball and commanding the area/high balls are therefore even more highlighted

That stat isnt helping your case. If you look at relative numbers, only Kepa is worse.

So now we're comparing De Gea to Alexis . No point in continuing.

That goal he conceded against crystal palace, he was using his hands instead of his legs. He was quite effective while using his legs this far along and i wonder why he started using his hands to block shots. Maybe he's getting wrong advice from someone else who's trying to change his natural game?

We are not comparing them, i just wanted to show how desperate you are. You know you have no arguments left, the truth is on the pitch. But you can keep your De Gea posters on the wall, i hope they are save for now :)
