Funny how De Gea and Alexis declined started about the same time, we all agree Alexis is done but many here saying “he's on a bad patch”. A 18 month bad patch.

I think that Juve has screwed us again. That's what happens when you pit men (Paratici, Agnelli and Sarri) vs boys (Woodward, little Ole)

We need a system in place from top to bottom. VDS/Marotta as CEO, Campos as DOF, Mitchell as head of recruitment and a new manager.
Why you calling our manager “little Ole”?

Because it hasn't been 18 months for De Gea, Alexis started has been underwhelming since the start of the same season in which De Gea has been elected the best keeper in the league and Sanchez is an outfield which generally decline faster than keepers. They're to distinctly different cases, comparing them is pointless.

Cause he is inexperienced and naive both admin and tactically wise
So your fantastically bright idea full of imagination is to label him little? That's the best you came up with? Were you trying to be a dull condescending prick?

He’s had an offer on the table for a long time & hasn’t signed.

He will pull another mercenary move like Herrera & be lauded for it by the fanbase.

He has given us his best years & I thank him for his service but he doesn’t play for United as a favour, he’s been well paid & has looked to leave numerous times.

Hes had 2 bad seasons. Hes not that good anymore
Disagree. He's also been playing in a pretty shit team for years with comical support from his back 4. Expecting miracles from your keeper week in week out is an endeavour with diminishing returns.

You’re saying it like one bad season is nothing, by the looks of it that’s his level now.
If I thought of it as nothing, I wouldn't have mentioned it.

Second? Probably more than that.
I have no idea why the club loves to be treated like shit by some of its players.
I thought we passed on Dybala because he was more interested in the money than anything else the club has to offer, then why the feck are we prepared to give our declining want-away keeper superstar wages?
I don’t understand this club I really don’t.
Simple.
1) dybala needs to be purchased with money
2) offering ddg a new deal is exactly why we offered mata new deal. It negates the need to make more signings. Although his wage is sigh any decent gk wont be available below 50m now. So offering him 6 year deal at 120m is only 20mil per year.

Dybala is "money minded" is only a smoke screen. The owners is always about money.

I also call him Molde and his rebuild as the Cardiffisation of Manchester United. I won't go tough on Ole. He is a legend after all. The best 4th choice striker in United's history. Its not his fault that he's incredibly out of depth

Check the thread “should we renew De Gea’s contract?” There’s a compilation of his last mistakes in the 18 months. He’s heavily declined, this didn’t started last season it started around january 2018.

I think comparing Alexis and De Gea its a really good point, no one in their twisted mind would consider extending Alexis contract nevermind improving his wages. But De Gea has been shit for around the sane time yet we are discussing if we should double his wages?

Makes no sense to me, the main difference is that Alexis was good for Arsenal and shit for us, while De Gea was class for us for many years, but we are talking about present time here and he’s become a liability.

Schmeichel, VDS, DDG for me. Always liked DDG but for me I've never fully warmed to his personality, way too timid for a United keeper in my eyes.
This. Recency bias, along with the lackluster quality of our outfield has caused him to be a bit overrated.

You're defense against being called out a dick is "don't worry I can be an even bigger dick"?

Using a video as an argument, but not posting the actual video is a dick move.

Anyway is this the one?

So a mistake in march of 2018, two mistakes in a space of a month in June, then there's the mistake against Arsenal which is was six months later, a non mistake for the Valery goal and then a flurry of mistakes to finish up the season. Labeling this as 18 months of bad form is disingenuous, especially when you ignore all of his good performances in the same time frame. Compare this to to a year and a half of abysmal and another 6 months of disinterested performances from Alexis and there's an obvious difference.

There's also the fact that Alexis is a outfield player which again usually decline faster the goalkeepers. His bad performances also seem to be connected with his physical decline, while De Gea's issues seem to be moslty mental which is generally easier to solve.

Of course de Gea might never be the same and it might be better to not give him the giant contract anyway. But comparing his form in the past year and a half vs Sanchez's is silly.

De Gea needs to sort his future out. All this uncertainty has affected his goalkeeping. If he thinks he is going to go through this whole season playing for the first team making mistakes because his mind is on other things, then he can think again. If he is waiting to see if there is a resurgence in the team's fortunes before committing, then I'm afraid time has run out. It's not that Romero can be better than De Gea even on a bad day, it's just an extra negative news story when we need positive vibes.

You can act like dull and unimaginative prick as much as you want mate. I just find it very entertaining how very proud you are of acting like a dull and unimaginative prick.

Seriously some of the “fans” on here make me fecking sick!

And then to suggest that Dean Henderson, with zero PL experience is a better option is just a joke.
Please feel free to leave the forum if you don’t agree with others having opinions.

Hendo is currently playing in the premier league, so go and get yourself a more informed opinion. 4 games isn’t zero to my knowledge.

Should never have let it get to this. How we let our key players get this close to the end is ridiculous. It's not like he was a good player we could maybe replace, he was our best player for years and of all the players, deserved his demands to be met
Don’t be silly

Where do you draw the line for de Gea? If the club really did offer him a world record deal and he turned it down, should we keep offering more? And more?

He may have demanded Sanchez wages - which is sort of understandable. Another reason why Sanchez had to go. But he doesn’t justify 400k or whatever a week based on his poor last season and poor start to this one too.

Nah, it's because you're acting like one,.I thought that was obvious from the context.
Redcafe is huge so I'd suggest we both stay from each other hair. I'll surely will. Enjoy your use of pricks mate. I'm referring to the word of course

Imagine if Ronaldo renewed for a record fee instead of moving to Madrid. Would you have thought the same?
Depends on the circumstances, DDG had a massive offer from us, but still tried to force through the infamous failed Madrid move, he had little option but to sign up after that fell through or he probably wouldn't have played, and it'd have hindered his career, plus there was allegedly a Madrid clause in that new contract as well.

So yes, if Rolando had done that I'd have felt the same, but if he had just rejected them for a better contract offer from us, then no.

Players who rely on speed declining around 30, given the high usage rates of the modern game, we've seen. Keepers tend to only improve into their early 30s. I can only guess it's mental. The team has struggled as a whole since then.

In what universe did he have two bad seasons?

When a keeper singlehandedly costs you top 4 with crap performances game after game he is no longer a rock solid reliable keeper. A keeper that is not reliable is no longer a top class keeper no matter how good his shot stopping skills may be.

Keeping seems to have a big mental aspect to it as well. World class keepers like Iker went to crap really fast too. Joe Hart went from being a really good keeper to a liability. It doesn't take long for a downfall and there's not saying it ever stops/reverses.

Salary is almost always being determined by past achievements, not by current form, in sport.

You can look at Formula 1 and Ferrari team as an example: Sebastian Vettel earns around 40m euro, his team mate Charles Leclerc earns 2m euro. Still, Leclerc performs much better this season, miles better.

He's been a top keeper for us in poor era but I would still get shut. Not the time for giant wages when he has cost us dear already in the last 12 months. Bring in young hungry players whenever we get the chance. Get a few quid and wish him good luck in January. Never going to get younger and hungrier again for us.

Yes, let’s trust a potential Champions League effort to a man with a grand total of FOUR games! Forget that, Longstaff had a whole THIRTEEN appearances I don’t know why we didn’t jump at the chance to sign him for 50m, should have snapped up that bargain and made him captain!

I stand up for Redcafe. But Jesus Christ, the last few pages of this thread are pathetic and embarrassing.

De Gea has been outstanding for United. Our best player for the majority of the last 5 years. He has a bad patch and he’s suddenly past his peak.... yeah..

VDS in his Juventus days comes to mind. Was a liability but built up his confidence again with Fulham to become WC.

People talk about one year like it was nothing, when it's actually such a long time in football. His "bad form" started in the World Cup and except some moments of brilliance, it's been prolonged until now. Signing this guy on 350k /week (probably more) for 5 years would mean stumbling on the same stone as we did with Rooney. It would be a ticking bomb because at some point we would need a replacement and it becomes difficult to keep or release the guy with those wages.

It would create problems also like Alexis' contract with everyone aiming to earn ridiculous numbers, even more when the player is earning that while he plays badly. Time to part ways and find a more balanced keeper in my opinion, surely more human under the posts but better in every other aspect hopefully, and without breaking the wage structure in that crazy way.

One important thing we are lacking are commanding players in every line, so the door is open to find a more influential keeper with presence in the box. Adding a keeper, defenders and midfielders with commanding skills and personality would improve massively the way we operate as a whole, if they're good players of course. We are one of the softest, coldest and most naive teams around and this needs to be adressed like the technical or physical aspects. Good to have refreshed energies with all the kids, but some 25-27 years old with bold character and cleverness are needed too.

There's a debate to be had over whether he is worthy of the huge contract that's been reportedly offered, something I don't think any of us expected when he was dragging us through seasons single-handed and was worth any amount of cash. But yeah talks of terminal decline and even suggestions that he was never all that anyway are below the belt for me.

what are DDG’s outstanding attributes apart from shot stopping
There is only one job for the goalkeeper in any era of football, and that is to stop the ball going into the net.
DDG is as good as anybody. He's had a shakey defence in front of him for years. At the present time he has got a new defensive duo and they need to bed in. I've not seen a mistake from him this season. I'll concede he's not been in the same scintillating form in recent months but if he can wait till Maguire gets settled we'll be a formidable defence.
I just hope he signs because this saga will run and run and will become more and more of a negative news item as the season wears on.

Imo, he has taken us for a ride. Before the window closed the club seemed to think his new contract was a done deal.

I am big fan of De Gea but I don't like the fact how he handled our contract extension and demand high fees from us, we offered him 350K or so which mean he'll become the best paid in the league, I don't include Sanchez as he's on loan to Inter. What could De Gea possibly want more? We were very patient with him and put faith in him when he was bad in his first season and believed him most of the time and he becomes the best GK and it paid it off, we made him the best-paid goalkeeper in 2015 and still best-paid goalkeepers today.

De Gea could tell us he doesn't want to renew the contract so we can look to sell him and line up a replacement for him but he didn't and is not signing the contract yet, so he'd be free to talk with other clubs in winter. As much as it pains me to say, he doesn't care about us and he has taken us for a ride. If he's more interested in more despite being in poor form, just let him leave, I don't want player with an attitude like this.

Cost us top 4 with his form at the end of last season and has already cost us 5 points this season. Has been on a steady decline for 2 years now. Would be madness to renew on the reported 350k a week. Sell him in January if we can get a replacement (not Romero) or let him go for free in the summer.
