The club should take the offer off the table, take time to reassess his form, and make an offer accordingly. We have too many players on wages that do not reflect their contribution/ability.
You realise he's 4 months away from being able to sign for another club?

then we will lose him on a free in the summer, at least now we can demand a fee

Doesn't really change things much. Give it time, if he comes good, let's make him a very good offer, if not then he can sign wherever he chooses.

There's a chance that he could have his mind made up on moving already.

For me, Schmeichel is the greatest goalkeeper in our history. He’s everything that embodies a phenomenal goalkeeper. Maybe it’s a German thing as he reminds me of our prime Manuel Neur and Oliver Kahn. Strong in the air, can save penalties, score goals, command his defense etc. At the time of the poll, I was still debating between Van Der Sar or De Gea who is the second best but I always thought it’s not fair and gave the benefit of the doubt to De Gea as Van Der Sar was in one of our greatest United team while De Gea was our best player and had to singlehandedly rescue us in our post SAF team.

However, when you look back before De Gea declined, there are still some attributes of his game which doesn’t make him an all time great goalkeeper and that puts him behind Van Der Sar. He has a diabolical record in penalties, he doesn’t come off his line very often and doesn’t have the commanding presence or fear that strikes into strikers that great goalkeepers like Schmeichel and Van Der Sar possess.
Schmeichel reinvented goalkeeping at the time, changing the position to the same extent that Neuer has with the sweeper keeper role. No came out like he did, no one threw the ball as hard or as far. 92-94, massive throw to Cantona/Hughes, Kanchekskis/Giggs played in, counter attack goal. I’ve also never seen strikers sh*t their pants 1 on 1 so often.
VDS on the other hand was just calmness personified; a bit like Buffon. Wasn’t about the big showy saves but barely ever made a mistake, and if he did, he shrugged it off.
De Gea is the best reflex shot stopper I’ve ever seen; he makes saves no one else could make, and this could dip with age which is a worry.
3 truly great keepers, each with a different skill set, we’ve been lucky to have all of them and they’ve all be top 3 in the world at their peak. Even if de Gea’s decline is terminal, he’s still been a superb player for us for a long time. Shouldn’t let recency bias cloud that.

How many times do we hear that he is very close to signing a new deal and then it all goes quiet again?

I think as soon as there is some rumblings about him joining another team on a free next summer then his team just leak a story that he is close to agreeing when he isn't and it's clear that his heart is set on a new club next year. Not the loss it would have been when he was in his prime but still a blow.

I'd rather we lose him for free than be stuck with a dud. He's postured this long and put off renewing, so there is a chance he leaves on a free no matter what.

I agree with this, we don't want another Sanchez situation where we can't shift him.

glad you'r not in charge of the finances
You're assuming that once we renew we can ask for a transfer fee. But imagine a declining error prone keeper on 350k/w.
Who would want him, and who's going to pay for that?

If he gets a mega contract but doesn't improve he ends up on our bench, with our star performers agitating for similar money, or like Sanchez, we subsidize a move.

There's a debate to be had over whether he is worthy of the huge contract that's been reportedly offered, something I don't think any of us expected when he was dragging us through seasons single-handed and was worth any amount of cash. But yeah talks of terminal decline and even suggestions that he was never all that anyway are below the belt for me.
Well, it's really a moot point if said contract has been offered, and even more of a moot point if he's rejecting it.

VDS was better at organizing his defence than Dave is. I have him at third after Peter and Edwin and it's specifically down to this.

But we should absolutely sign him up to a new deal at crazy wages. At worst he's a back up for us, not a bad option to have.

Forget the money for a minute. Does he really honestly want to stay at United? Nope.
Now remember the money. Is that enough to make him change his mind? Yup.
To add to it all I guarantee we'll hear some genius on TV call him "This great servant of Manchester United"

his miraculous ability at shot stopping has gotten him (and other defenders tbf) out of jail.
He got the whole club out of jail for 4 or 5 seasons. No other goalkeeper has managed those feats. A modern goalkeeper should be better with his feet but a modern professional footballer wouldn't want to sign for man utd. Which is what's happened.

Manchester United have a history of overpaying players and this one looks like it could be the mother of overpaying. Manchester could be stuck with a declining goalkeeper who is impossible to move because of salary. He has been brilliant for quite some time but it only makes sense to let him go and give Henderson a chance.

Just for the fun of it, you might want to check how many penalties Peter actually saved...

Its been 18 months even if its hard for you to believe it. And De Gea has been a disaster, he gifted goals against Chelsea, Arsenal, City which would had mase all the difference between getting top 4 and ending at 6th. Also against Barcelona in the UCL and a terrible mistake against PSG as well that they didn't convert but would had cost us all the joy of that heroic night.

Between doing shit like Alexis and gifting goals like De Gea Id preffer Alexis. Alexis is highlighted because how much his wages are, but he contributes around the same shitty quality as Mata or Lingard.

De Gea is the best paid GK in the world and should be criticized as that.

Yeah highlight some mistakes but ignore the saves he made in that time frame as well . If you really believe he he has be shit for 18 months you need to go watch another sport because that is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say . Without his saves we would have been 10th . Honestly so called fans like you make me dispair. Support your team ffs

I'm sorry, but i'm a DDG fan and whilst I think he's been excellent for us over the years, he HAS been poor on many occasions this past 18 months. He's cost us lots of crucial goals and hasn't looked himself. I personally don't trust him to have a good game at the moment, I also don't rely on him to stop long-range shots. I personally think we should move him on and get our next goalkeeper.

How has he been poor for 18 months when he probably had his best season in the one before last? mind you his form dropped in Feb so it really isn't that long. How come his heroics have been forgotten so quickly?

Jesus F*ckin Christ @RooneyLegend - his form fell off a cliff the year before last - specifically in February. Since then he has had a 15% drop off in save % for Man United and his poor form carried into Russian with the spanish team, to the point where he was on the verge of being dropped.

Since then he has had one world class game (spurs at Wembley) but has continued to make mistakes game after game. The stats (nowhere clearer than a keepers) have been bang average (64-68% saves with poor distribution) since then and there is no sign of sustained improvement.

with 18 months of data, Dubravka and pickford are in the exact same category as "New DDG" & there is no chance he is worth contract on current form.

We don't have time to go through 10 goalkeepers like we did between smikes and vds.
We decided to replace Schmeichel with Bosnich from Villa who was suspect at kicking. We then moved onto Massimo Taibi from Venezia and he lasted 4 games but he did produce a MOTM performance at Anfield in a 3-2 win to his credit. We then bought Barthez who also failed to live upto expectations due to being too short for a keeper IMO. We then tried our luck in the MLS with Tim Howard arriving who was also a failure before we finally signed Edwin Van der Sar from Fulham who had spent 4 years at Craven Cottage.

We failed to replace Schmeichel due to us not going for the right profile of players. We made the task even more difficult than it should've been. Van der Sar from Ajax we moved for but Juventus had already agreed a deal. And then there was Francesco Toldo in Serie A who could've been a possibility. But we signed keepers who never had the pedigree or potential to play for us with the exception of perhaps Barthez who was short.

What are we actually trying to achieve by remembering them? Since the WC he has been dodgy and singlehandedly cost us a CL spot and possibly huge signings. What are we hoping for and how much time do we wait?

Why do we have to give De Gea monstrous wage when he is already in decline? Have we forgotten our young talented Dean Henderson? He has the potential to be up there with Peter Schmeichel and Van Der Sar easily. If he cannot find play time at Manchester United, he may leave like Pogba did in the past.

Funny how De Gea and Alexis declined started about the same time, we all agree Alexis is done but many here saying “he's on a bad patch”. A 18 month bad patch.
You can say De Gea is on a bad patch because He used to be in a world class patch consistently, there is a very realistic chance He'll turn to be fecking good again as has been proven many times.

Sanchez on the other hand, has never had a decent patch in his ManUnited career. Well maybe one time when He played with his dog in a video after PSG win.

I’m one of the best goal keepers in the world - why would I give my best peak years to a team that doesn’t have a shot at winning anything in the next 3 years?

Oh right they’re gonna pay me more than anyone else to put in a sub par effort every week. Sign me up

Fire him off. Seriously. If he wanted to sign he would have.

Get a keeper in with the balls to come out of his 6 yard box.

He was those things, now he's at worst declining or at best going through the worst form of his life because he doesn't want to be at United anymore. I think it's another case where all parties would be happier with a separation.

He's saved two penalties in 8 years! RVP in the 8-2 and Baines FA Cup semi under LVG! It is a diabolical record.

Hard to convince people if you are mixing facts up. De Gea saved the Baines penalty in the Premier League (Our 2-1 victory) and saved Lukaku's penalty in the FA Cup.

You better check your facts. He has 20% penalty save success overall in his career. Not good but I wouldn't say diabolical one. Usually penalties are converted at around 80% rate which fits the average profile.

Schmeichel's record was worse from memory.
