Why don't we score from corners anymore?

I honestly can't remember the last time it happened in a competitive fixture. It's not like we lack height, Pogba, Matic, Maguire, Lindelof are all pretty big, and the latter two are pretty dangerous for their national teams.

For almost a decade it felt like we averaged between 5-10 goals a season from corners (Becks, then Vida) but now I'm not convinced we've scored one in 2 years.

This is something that can be coached, obviously, and yet feels to me like just another area where our 'elite' level backroom staff are not earning their wages.

Also, it worked with pens a million years ago, so why not :)

Simple.Because
A the quality of the ball coming is absolutely atrocious
B Because the ball is so bad,the players dont even bother to do anything cause they dont expect any sort of quality.

Tbf youngs corners are decent most of the times. Just the players in the box can't get into a good position.

Fifty per cent of it is bad corners. Fifty per cent of it is some of our players being mentally too weak to want attack the ball and some others just lacking the footballing IQ to make the moves to get their head on the ball.

I don't even remember when we were good at them. Even under Sir Alex most of the time it felt like we were pretty shit at them.

Smalling and Fellaini were usually good for 1 or 2 goals from a corner a season. They arent here anymore

In real life I have seen the difference between good corner kick takers and bad corner kick takers. The difference is astounding.

Trust me when I say, we do not have any quality in terms of getting the ball in. That is simply it.

We aim a horrible punt at Maguire far post. Every. Single. Time. So easy to read and defend against, which isn't usually necessary cos the delivery is poor anyway. Can't they work on variations? Different approaches? Just change it around. What do they do on the training pitch? No imagination to be found in all of Carrington???

It isn't just the quality of the cross. None of our players ever attack the goal; they all seem to wait at the edge of the box. It is frustrating watching set pieces or crosses. Even if Manutd did have the best crossers in the world, they still wouldn't score because of no movement.

Why don’t we score at all or when we do why can’t we score more than once in a game ? I’m far more concerned about those things than scoring from corners although I’d take one one right now.

We've come close in the last 2 games, looks like we're finally working on routines.

Yeah, I think someone passed it to Mctominay to hit it first time. Atleast we are trying something different, instead of constantly trying to float the ball onto Maguire's head, and failing.

Yeah I think it was James. Against Norwich Pereira, Rashford and Martial had a nice lil combo, so unlucky not to score.

Last time we were decent at corners was when Vida was at his peak what, 8/9 years ago? We’ve been useless for years.

Pereira's delivery is excellent. I feel it's only a matter of time with him taking them now. Maguire needs to step it up.

Our delivery is hit or miss, but I don't think it's as bad as people say. There's so many good deliveries that don't get attacked and the keeper claimed with ease. Nobody attacking the ball, nobody trying to block the keepers path to the ball. Maguire has been a good outlet at winning aerial duels at the back post but nobody gambles on the knock downs.

The last one was Lukaku in February at Selhurst Park, but even that wasn’t directly from the cross, took two knocks ons first

This has been an issue for sometime now, seasons in fact and there seem to be many reasons we are not very successful well we don't score!

In terms of placing the ball, in the extreme it either hits the first man or goes out on the far side narrowly missing the corner flag opposite.
In terms of speed/height of the ball, mostly its left to hang in the air usually aimed at the penalty spot which is then overcrowded, rarely zipped in at shoulder or head height.
In terms of 'plans' supposed operational inside the box, virtually none existent; now its basically to try and find Maguire's head.
Positional play within the goal area, again none, all our top strikers, except perhaps Greenwood, never anticipate, never gamble on finding space. or where the ball might fall, in fact all our players below six foot, seem to wander aimlessly around, none in a position to cause defences problems, whether its man or zonal marking in operation.
We are probably the easiest team to defend a corner against in the PL.
One day however it must end, it can hit someone's backside, or (as with Hernandez) back of his head, or even cannon off a defender and enter the net, let's hope its today at Bournemouth!

Eh? Came on against Chelsea and the first thing he did was hit a corner into the first defenders forehead. Not convinced

We've been good when RVP took them, especially in his first season.

Corners are mostly about delivery.

We have Maguire who is superb in the air, and maybe McTom can grow to be that level, but at the moment it's all too obvious where the ball is going.

Because we do not practice enough on set pieces. The way we take it I can see that the players are winging. There has to be different types of corners too. The near post flick, the near post flick to the far post back to the centre etc. Also because there is no Fellaini too.

Those deliveries from Pereira were fecking embarrassing. He's supposed to be a set piece specialist too!
