I thought he was fairly low key. Seemed like Fred was running midfield on his own with the odd occasional sideways pass from Matic.

The pace of the game suited him much better last night, and he wasn't s***e, as at least one poster has implied. Most of his passes were sideways, admitted, but with Astana putting 8 players in defence, forward passes were always risky, although when the forward players, and Gomes found space, they were found fairly regularly. Saying all that, I'm not a Matic fan, and I'm afraid that the EPL is too fast a pace for him, the early rounds of the Europa League are probably his limit. Personally if we can get a fee for him in the January window I would sell him.

With the squad being so thin, I still see a role for him in Europa league, and first rounds of the cups, when fielded alongside younger players.

That is certainly a role he could fill, but as the competition gets tougher, the games will probably will quicker in the EL. It maybe too soon, but I can certainly see Garner filling that role, but we will all have to wait and see.

This. Looking at our group, Matic shouldn't be too much of an issue against these three teams. I'd be happy enough to play him for 90mins in all six group games, if that means we can rest others for the league.

Yup, this seems the most likely. Think he'll be gone in the summer.

Look at his comments after that game about "I played and we won" and now this, and it definitely seems like a player who's trying to attact interest from a new club by showing he's still a valuable addition. I'm happy in this case as Ed might have learned his lesson about not renewing contracts etc. I'll be very unhappy if he isn't replaced though - a new DM and James Garner as the future DM would be a solid pair of options.

I think he'll play vs West Ham. If he can manage half of those passing stats against them i'll be impressed. In fairness he was pretty good the other night but the pace of the premier league is a whole different level.

How ironic with Lukaku, 2 of Joses soldiers turn out to be delicate little flowers
Jose ruined their expectations with incredibly preferential treatment. They never got benched for bad runs and now that he's gone still think their bad performances should be enough to get them starts

Football speaks loudest, not words. Matic is trying to get ahead of the message, because he's seen how optics around Lukaku seemed to have been manipulated before his sale.

It's not just Matic though; Pogba, Rashford, Lingard and Smalling amongst others have offered meaningless words over the past year.. not necessarily about framing their worth but definitely trying to represent values they actually do not embody.

WRT Matic, playing 10 great games this season, having fewer than 5 shitty ones and the rest in between will guarantee him a next club. Talk is really cheap in comparison.

But he wasn't. What was he good at? Astana sat on the edge of their box for 90 minutes. They put him under no pressure whatsoever. Playing simple, short passes shouldn't be beyond anyone when they have that much time and space.

Such a shadow of his former self, an ageing DM just going through the motions now

Hope, We Lose
Made a couple of decent forward passes in the first half. Other than that everything else was missing from a DM's performance

Nowhere near good enough, he didn't stink as much as usual but he was still pretty crap, anyone thinking that was as good performance is allowing the standards to continue to fall.

Does a few things well still, but overall just another ageing player that is not good enough to be able to contribute.

He looked good in the first half, then disappeared afterwards.
Thought he was good for half hour but that was it. He defends too much with his eyes. They were exchanging passes couple of meters outside our box, leading up to their first goal, with hardly any pressure coming from him.

United's best player today. Embarrassing posts in here as usual.

He was fine. Our problem today had nothing to do with anything defensively. Not like they created much. Was entirely down to not having any creative personnel on the pitch and the players in the attack not being able to do anything.

Did your stream crash after kickoff?

Indeed - he was fecking awful today. Hope we can find a suitable replacement asap.

The Kazakhstan league is his level, he should go and boss it over there then he can post those kind of Opta stats every week.

He was not complete shit, but his biggest problem is that he slows the game down to a crawl. He is not suited to a fast tempo game, and unless we have better attackers technically, we need more tempo. He also backs off too much, instead of closing attackers down. We won't play a pressing game with passengers in the team.

He was one of our best players today.

Not that it says much, mind you.

This is actually the 2nd game in a row where generally I think he has played well in terms of his duties. There have been the odd occasion he has been caught on the ball and I do think he protects himself a lot and he doesn’t offer himself enough or make runs for people or work as hard as he could do to get the ball back but I think it’s genuinely just his age catching up with him.

Now all those negatives do add up to hindering us but when he’s been on the ball these last 2 games he’s done some good stuff.

We all know he is past it and needs replacement but today he was one of our best players. That also says a lot about how our others players were. As for the goal, the move was made behind his back. He was covering the space and he did the right thing. Someone else and I would put the blame of Mata because he could see everything that was happening and the move by the West Ham player to come in from their left. He did not say anything to Matic and neither did he give any indications of doing anything about it. It was that first touch to the scorer that was the crucial issue.
