Basically as the title says. Can’t believe my head’s gone from feeling positive after seeing them live to tonight but that performance was José vs Sevilla kinda shite!

I know we’re still, in name at least, Manchester United, but we need hundreds of millions of pounds of investment, which the owners won’t give, and frankly who the feck would want to come!?!

To join Man Utd - one of the biggest clubs in the world, get a decent wage and be part of the so called 'rebuild' is a very attractive offer, especially for younger players.

You don’t need hundreds of millions of you invest smartly.
Liverpool were also-rans, finishing nearly 20pts behind us, before Klopp spent 150m on a CB and a GK, Palace rejected 70m for Zaha, this will take hundreds of millions to rebuild.

The club have spent hundreds of millions, albeit badly, so to say they won't isn't correct. Liverpool looked clueless until they got Klopp so it's obviously possible as long as you find the right manager.

I don't quite understand your point but are you saying it was possible for them but not United?

They continued to hit the glass ceiling until the right manager got the right players, we appear to have neither and a board u willing to accept the latter costs more than a net spend of 70m fecking pounds!

Do you not think players will join United expecting other players to join?

Do you think Sancho, for example, won’t sign for United because he won’t want to play in literally that team tonight?

De Gea, Lindelof, Matic, Fred, Greenwood, Gomes, James, Mata, Rashford will all be in the squad on Sunday, that team of reserves cost £245m!
where did you get that figure 245m from?

Rashford - free
Greenwood - Free
Gomes - Free
DDG - 21m
Lindelof - 30m
Fred- 50m
Mata - 35m
James - 19m
---------------
155m

And yet people are adamant that Sancho wants to join this black hole of attacking football.

They won’t sign because the so called first team (this squad is not deep enough to have reserves) are barely any fecking better!

Ok, bit of an overshot, but add 40m Matic to that and it’s pushing 200m

The Sancho thread has been such an interesting insight into delusion.

We are not turning this around quickly, smart investment and more than 2/3 transfers in a window would be nice.

I try not to get drawn into too many philosophical arguments but, yeah, if you take the last two summer windows they have been an absolute disgrace.

Purchases this year look great but there absolutely should have been one or two more. Last year? fecking hell it’s beyond explanation.

Good squads are refreshed with 2/3 players a season as a matter of course, to not work twice as hard as them in the market is negligent.

We seemingly start negotiations and planning after the window opens and given the state of the team that puts us even further back.

I just can not understand how people at the club looked at this squad and thought it was ok to go into the season with.

The key is to identify competent, quality players with something to prove who’d improve the squad, to who it would still be a step up - Cook, Brooks, Ake (can play as a midfield anchor) at Bournemouth, Longstaff (who will still come good despite his fitness-related fitness issues) Godfrey, Lewis, Buendia, Pukki at Norwich.

Ben Davies at Spurs is a solid, understated upgrade on Shaw and Young at leftback, McGinn from Villa would be an upgrade on the likes of Fred and Matic - the players are there to be had.

Then there’s Pulisic and Jovic, two prodigies who seemingly regret their summer moves, so would likely embrace the opportunity of a fresh start.

But enticing them would require a new manager who’s previously proven he’s got a clue what he’s doing.....

So much hyperbole in here. We did great in the last summer window by getting rid of deadwood and the three signings we made look good and should be in the first team for the next 5 years. Yes Ole failed to replace Lukaku and a midfielder and it made us weak, but once we fill those holes in january or next summer we will be in a much better position than when we finished 2nd under Jose.

You start by criticizing the hyperbole in the thread, then go on to state we 'did great in the last summer transfer window'. The irony.

We aren't a Lukaku replacement and one midfielder away from the finished product and if you think we are you've more than the quality of posts in this thread to worry about.

But we're suffering from it. I get that maybe he had to take the deal now to get some kind of value in Lukaku but we're really paying the price of not having enough goals. There was no harm in keeping Sanchez either.

You don't think a midfield with Matic, Mata and Fred is a good excuse ? You could put both Klopp and Guardiola combined here, and they couldn't make that midfield look decent
No, I don't think it's a good excuse. Especially considering the opposition.

Any coach that knows to build a system will get something out if these. Klopp got the midfield of Henderson, Milner and some other feck when he came in. He got Origi to score goals.

I think the first sentence is too much of a simplification. The last time LFC finished more than 8 points behind MUFC was in 2013. Since then a looot more has happened at the club than just signing van Dijk and Alisson. A couple of major things is the restructuring of the footballing side of the operation, particularly in terms of analytics and recruitment, and the hiring of a (world class) manager who excels at working within that structure.

Back on topic though;
I think the vast majority of footballers would like to come play for Man United. A few who have legitimate chances of being signed by the top CL contenders might decline, but that's unlikely to be a high number.

Klopp got Liverpool to play in his style in his very first season without a summer transfer window.

 at the idea that you need money to do that. It's not like we're pulling a Norwich where every once in a while you see real attacks, but struggle due to quality. We're not doing anything resembling a coached side.

Exactly. What is needed is a coaching team that is proven to develop players and a board willing to invest in players that may not have their name in lights.
