I'm still not seeing it unfortunately. Never have.

Long season yet, plenty of time for me to hop aboard the hype train

You never saw it when he was playing youth? or are you basing this on his very limited minutes as a 17 year old?

Both. But I'm purely basing it on that gut feeling of players taking your breath away (e.g. Morrison, Foden, Sancho, Cherki, Xavi Simons), and I know he's not that sort of player.

Greenwood's productivity, though amazing (especially considering that it usually comes later in a players development) is essentially stat padding. Looking past that, he doesn't give me that special feeling.

No one will know until 5 years time, and even then, strikers often bloom late.

Stat padding  a hat trick against Chelsea one of the best youth teams around?

I’m struggling to see how you can look at his goals and not see something special? He’s not a 1 trick pony that just scores tap ins.

I'm not bashing the kid. He's a very good player who capitalises on shit defending. He just doesn't do it for me personally, and I'm not saying I'm great at judging talent (I've been saying Harry Kane is a one season wonder for the last 4 years)

Let's take your Chelsea game as example (bizarre choice...)

Chelsea's defending was like a comedy sketch. He was gifted opportunities and fair enough he took them. But I'd be disappointed if Jese Lingard missed those.

I think we will leave it at you being a poor judge. Lingard wouldn’t of scored those on his left foot.

I'm really excited about this kid. Best young English prospect since Rooney for me. I've said this before but a young two footed RVP is the stuff dreams are made of. He's oozes class and calmness. Once he settles into this team he is going to transom it and I don't think it is going to take him long.

Indeed, it's fair enough to not be taken aback with him at first team level (still, 2 goals as a 17 year old in his first month of professional football is impressive no matter how you look at it) but at youth team level he was so clearly a level above everyone on the pitch. The amount of games he won us through sheer skill and determination was outstanding.

Also, Xavi Simmons for fecks sake, there's a reason Barca didn't kick up a fuss when he left.

I think people who are underwhelmed are basing it exclusively on his first appearances in senior football being told to play on the right - if that was all I’d seen of him I’d struggle to understand the hype as well.

The reality he does his best work centrally, in and around the box; Van Persie - the player most liken Mason to - only began to truly shine once he was primarily used as a #9. Due to his gait, RVP’s a valid comparison, but I also see a lot of post-injury, Real Madrid-era Brazilian Ronaldo in him - the capacity to isolate and destroy defenders 1-on-1 in the box, able to go either way and finish with either foot.

The reality is he should be exclusively playing centrally in the absence of, or alongside, Martial; Rashford is inferior to both technically, as a finisher and in terms of football awareness, so should exclusively be used wide right - if at all.

18 now, time to be our main striker until Martial is fully fit. A lot to ask from such a young player, but he has better instincts then Rashford.

Good young player who's developing well.
Hopefully in 3/4 seasons he'll be a consistent first teamer, touch wood.

Poor performance on a difficult surface. Should have scored from Dan James' cross. Struggled to control the ball.

Got one chance he could/should have scored but Vlaar blocked it. Didnt see him much after that... cant expect your 18 year old striker to show much in a team like this though.

He's nowhere near as good as people on here and youtube (Howson) have hyped him up to be. Be's no more clinical than Martial and Rashford, if not less. He's young and might improve but the boasting he'd bang them in for us has been proven false.

Got absolutely zero service other than one snapshot that was blocked that maybe he could have done better with. He's created his two goals for himself so far. Would love to see him in a creative team.

Maybe he is or maybe he isnt more clinical than Martial and Rashford... cant show it when he doesnt get any service. I dont think you can already say the boasting about his finishing is true or false right now. See how he does when chances are created for him. So far even the goals he has scored are goals he made himself without much service.

He's a first team player now and so he should be judged on what he shows, the same as everyone else.

He was appalling tonight, sorry. His control would have made Lukaku blush with embarrassment. An off-night for him, for sure. Hopefully he picks himself and cracks on the next opportunity he gets.

Not ready. This throwing in youngsters who aren't ready into the first team is going to do more harm than good. He should be playing a year in the u23's, then a loan, then in the first team as a squad player. How does he look in the u23's? does he play there?

Who was the last academy product that gave us like solid 5 years of play?

Maybe it has to do with the fact that they play 1 fixture every month? It's just a bad management.

He is too young . We are putting unnecessary pressure on this kid.

Who was it?
I think we have to go back to the 90s.

Top teams spend millions on youth academies and I read an article somewhere they could just shut them down and save money that the results would be better.

Best prospect since Rooney? Holy shit, this is why our youth fails so spectacularly - we hype them up way, way, way beyond their capabilities and actual talent and when they inevitably don't become Rooney v2 we say they're shit, garbage, this and that - see Rashford & Lingard.

I am sure he will become good but let's remember that the absolute best talents like Rooney were extremely good and had that killer instict even as 16 year olds while Greenwood looks like a sheep in comparison - very weak physically, makes no impact on the game whatsoever, looks afraid to take on his man and his touch is much worse than what I'd imagined after all the RvP comparisons.

Look at Saka who played against us this Monday, Martinelli today for Arsenal or Foden and the Chelsea boys to see well managed, well coached youth prospects that are outperforming Mason by wide margins right now and calm down with this exaggerated praise which will cost him, and us, badly.

He was sadly beyond poor (so was Gomes, the other Messiah figure this forum has created) and his touch, finishing and impact was not even Macheda levels. I hope these performances don't have too large of an impact on his long term confidence and progress as a footballer because that would be very sad.

Should be loaned out or play mainly in the Carabao cup, because right now, whatever you guys might wish is true, is his level.

OgS is doing more damage to our youngsters than actual good and Greenwood is a prime example.

He's ask to fulfill 2 roles. Either he gets brought off the bench with 20 minutes to go when we are losing in some vain attempt to spark some magic into this lifeless team or he's starting up front for the second choice eleven of a second rate squad.

He is a quite obviously talented youngster and in spite of those situations he has scored some goals and had a few bright performances but imagine what he'd look like in a functioning team. He's young enough that once OgS is gone this season can simply be seen as an experiment but he is that talented I don't want to see these vital years wasted by casting him in a role that is unfair.

He definitely needs work on his touch and his passing in general. He's got a heavy foot when he's passing and is misjudging the weight of his passes all the time. Inconsistency is one thing, but weaknesses are another. Hopefully he'll improve in this regard between now and 21, unlike Rashford who is making the same mistakes he was making four years ago.

Like James and Gomes I think he struggled with the constant moving around, but you have to accept this is going to happen with a player that turned 18 a couple of days ago.

Too much pressure on the kid. He's suddenly gone from U-23 level to our main striker behind Rashford. He shouldn't really be starting games on his own and needs blooding in.

Our lack of a forward purchase is going to bite us on the arse.

What is he meant to do? the manger changed positions of these players every 5 mins.

Started on the right, then into ST, then LW. Ole has said he is the most natural finisher? where are you most likely to get chances? as a CF, why keep playing him out of position and playe James up top? Ole has lost the plot.
