This is the concern but not from the angle of the CEO. The concern is we'll try to mish-mash an old school manager and a DOF. There was talk earlier that OGS would have an influence over the choice of DOF - that's a complete load of horse shit. He doesn't get to choose his boss.

The hierarchy should be set quite clearly - which is the DOF is the boss of the head coach. DOFs say is final over the managers.

The CEO is the DOFs boss. He sets the budget and has final say over anything that goes out of budget. So occasionally if we need to break our transfer budget, the CEO should sign it off and the DOF should give a good enough justification for it. Same if we need to break the wage structure for whatever reason. Things within budget remain within the DOFs autonomy.
This is how most hierarchies operate within a corporation, only with other job titles and description. And how a DoF should operate with the financial contrainsts coming from above.

Game after game I am left wondering about how in this world did we end up with this current group of players . How is the person responsible for this squad still making the big decisions at the club .

Apparently for some on here, it's not his fault. It's the fault of the managers...the managers that he has employed and allowed this mish mash up of players.

The role makes sense; look out for the long term. Who knew?
Obviously not the Glazers or Woodward which is why we don’t have one.

This needs to happen. Then an interim manager hired. Then an authentic manager in the summer.

I Iike Brighton’s DoFs description of buying players that suit the club, not the manager. We wouldn’t have this turnover had we had a single vision.
Surely now the Glazers must see that it makes sense and would actually save them money in the long term.

I think it's clear based on Ed's leaks that we're not going to get the type of Technical Director that most are clamoring for. It seems like what Ed was looking for was more of a head of recruitment type role.

This really needs to happen. Giving managers too much control in the transfer market has cost us dear post SAF. We build a foundation and then the manager gets sacked and the new manager then proceeds to getting rid of the players his predecessor signed. Which has continuously weakened the foundations of the team.

I don't really care who is chosen as long as someone is tasked with the responsibility to oversee the football strategy mid to longterm and fits the role.

Marcel Bout is a good shout if we're to choose internally. If not, then Dan Ashworth, Luis Campos etc would be more than welcome as far as I'm concerned.

My hope is that this absolute disaster of a season piles on the external pressure so that no one in the mainstream minces their words with regards to him and how we're run. We've all known this for years but it's only recently that it's become more commonplace for journalists and pundits to be a tad more aggressive in their criticism. It's still normally prefaced by acknowledging how great he is at the business side, which is frankly insane, given how much money the club have wasted on poor decisions at executive level.

I'd really hope it would be someone external who comes in fresh (not infected by the malaise) expecting authority and wanting to show his class from the get go. Who it will be is hugely significant.

There was a documentary on years ago and the Liverpool manager was saying (back in the 80s) that if ever “that lot down the road” got their act together they’d be trouble for Pool.
Well, we did when SAF came along

But they must be laughing cos now we’ve seriously not got our act together since he left and there’s no sign of it improving, that’s the frustrating part.

I'm more than happy with a external appointment too. Giving managers control in the transfer market is a bad idea unless said manager sticks around for the long-term. Which hasn't been the case post SAF and it has resulted in us seeing continuous squad imbalances and a steady weakening of the team foundation.

Small correction

*Is good enough to have here for the long term.

Expecting new reports on Monday or next few days about how we are imminently going to hire a DOF or technical director to help Ole strengthen the squad in January.

Our problem lies in the structure, the manager is effectively the Club at Manchester United so if you don't support his vision you have what happened with Jose and to change that we have to change the structure of the club to have more people who know what style of football they want, how to implement it and who can implement it from a coaching and playing perspective. Ole wants to play a fast and attacking brand of football with pressing up the pitch but he doesn't know how to implement it. Next man comes in and he wants possession based football and demands that we get rid of half the squad. The cycle continues.

However if we bring in a DOF and give him free reign over the football side having selected the right man I think we will see better results and year on year progression. Last summer a DOF signing should have been the first order of business even before the stupid rush to confirm Ole as a permanent manager and if that had been done we wouldn't be sitting 12th on the log getting sucked into an early season relegation battle.

Agreed on all this. I'm sure Ed has some type of structure but whatever it is, it is failing him...very badly too. We need a new manager but can we trust Ed to appoint the correct one? Already failed 4 times and not even remotely getting close.

Can you trust Ed to hire a good DOF?

Then we are essentially fecked until he is gone. Unless by some miracle he was to appoint one and gets it right

To be honest all the moaning about the club structure, the simple fact is we have a useless person running the club. We shouldn't expect things to be better until he is no longer running the club

You're correct, I'm beginning to get a headache talking about all this stuff.:lol:

But my issue is, I'm so emotionally invested in this club, it is hard to not speak about it, especially as we can see what the issues are.

Ed deserves a lot of the flak that comes his way but to say that Van Gaal and Mourinho were poor appointments is a bit unfair, both men didn't completely fail and they are appointments that the fan base agreed with and were eager for at the time. The issue is that being a non football man he lacks the knowledge and instincts of the game that would make him see the red flags with each of the two. This is where he needs help, we need someone that has the vision and knowledge of the game to be able to see a Manchester United manager from a distance for example, someone who can look at Howe and say that if I give this young manager 150m per season over the next three summers he will establish my club in the top three.

Lvg wasn't my first choice, I was holding out for Pep or Klopp. I DID NOT want Jose. But it is asy for me to say this, because I will get accused of 'hindsight'. Which is fine.

My issue with Ed on these appointments are, the different directions he takes with every different manager he employees. If he was consistent in his profile of manager, I'd cut him some real slack. But like I say, his profile of manager keeps changing, hence the mish mash up of players that have been signed or brought through.

That's the problem, no consistency.
Man Utd needs a vision for the club that's clear and concise - and then implement decisions to suit that.
The DoF if/when they arrive should be totally on board with that vision and then trusted to see that vision through.

Buying & selling/loaning players like we have been is idiotic, not to mention expensive.
Are the Glazers penny wise but pound foolish?

It’s ridiculous we haven’t appointed someone yet.

It seemed like we were all set to appoint one of Fletcher/Rio as DOF before summer and then seemed to get cold feet. I wonder if Woodward was starting to have doubts about bringing in another inexperienced ex- player after our horrible end to the season and wanted to see how we got on.

Or maybe I’m giving that joker too much credit.

That in itself would be even more harmful. We need a man with experience, not more Ed yes men!

I agree with the second part and it is because he is not best placed to judge the profile of a manager. Until he recognizes this weakness we are going to sink further and further into mediocrity.

unless a football director is bought in , any changes we make will be irrelevant

same old same old ...... we are failing to learn from any of the mistakes we are making

United are still in the market for someone who could be tagged as a director of football or technical director, but the parameters of the post will not see that person become an all-powerful figure at Old Trafford, rather part of a team of people assembled to address a whole series of challenges ranging from the buying and selling of players to the pathway from the Academy to the first team and everything in between.

Much like the transitional period the club's currently occupying, and arguably has since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, there's no timescale on when this new person will arrive on the scene.

The way I see it, if a director of football comes in, his mandate and authority will be rather limited compared to some of his peers. I think Woodie likes his 'manager picks, I buy' approach too much and would not be willing to surrender that part of his job.

More than we can trust him to hire a good manager, or rather a succession of good managers that aren't completely at odds stylistically.
Based on what exactly? There is zero evidence to support he can make any good footballing decisions

But he'd still have that power? Whoever we brought in under him, would still report to Woodward. It would just mean someone with a clue would be shaping the overall picture of the footballing side.
