I am going to ask a genuine question: what is McTominay good at? I really do not understand what people see in him. I have seen people saying that he is extremely promising and another saying he is better than the Longstaffs that play for Newcastle. Is he, though? What has he shown that makes him so much better than midfielders of a relegation standard team?

Are we not on the verge of entering the relegation zone? Yes, we are. Who has been one of the only ever-present members of the first team that has reached this position? McTominay. So, is he really better than midfielders of relegation candidates?

The problem for me is: I have never seen one person actually list what he is good at. I don't want to hear hard work; that should be a generic trait of any player in the Premier League, heck, even in the Championship and lower leagues. I want to hear about his passing, his defensive ability, his ability to create or score goals. To me, this all seems to be non-existent.

I know someone may mention the goal against Arsenal, but Townsend (and many other average players) scores great goals every season, it doesn't mean he should play for Manutd.

McTominay seems to be getting shown leniency just because he is a youth player. Fred gets criticised for his passing, yet McTominay gets off. Fred has a pass completion of 91% whilst McTominay has 81%. How can Fred be criticised for his passing but McTominay be let off when his pass completion is 10% less. He is also less adventurous than Fred with his passing, which makes it worse.

I really don't understand what people see in him.

Fred is a nothing player, and has shown nothing bar glimpses that he might ever be a useful player for us. When I see Fred in the squad, I get that nervous feeling that he's gonna cost us the game. His passing is sideways and slow, I don't really see any qualities that tell me he'll make it here.

You're right about McTominay in a sense, he has no standout qualities, not a great passer, he's a decent tackler, good in the air but not creative and not really a goal threat. What he does do though is play the game at a much higher tempo than Fred, he wins the ball in good positions, is aggressive in his play, drives forward and breaks tackles, creating space for others and often winning free kicks.

I can tell you exactly what I expect from Scott every game, and most of it does have a positive impact on the team. He's way more incisive and direct with his play than Fred, and plays a simple game that's effective. With Fred, a lot of the time he looks like he's put his boots on the wrong way around. He rarely has any impact on the game whatsoever bar some nice sideways passes that most professional footballers should be able to do.

Nothing really. He is one of the main reasons why we cant hold onto the ball. At first I tried to be lenient with my assessment of him but 32 seconds into the Newcastle game he was dispossessed easily because he couldnt trap a ball.

His passing is inconsistent and obvious. During preseason he was very confident in his passing and i thought we had a promising player but ofcourse we have been fooled by excitement of a new season. He cant dribble, his passing is very average and he also gets bypassed in midfield although he supposedly offers high energy in the middle. Basically he is a below average player who offers hunger and passion.

I still think he could be useful if Ole wasnt so clueless and decided to field a three man midfield. The 2 man midfield is terrible for a b2b player that he most likely is.

I view him as a solid, unremarkable player whose attitude and dedication outweighs his ability.
Funny thing is though,he's our 2nd best central midfielder after Pogba.

He gives 100% every game, works his backside off, covers an awful lot of the pitch, gives us some real grit and fight. Can break up play, can run with the ball, can pass it easy, can pass it risky but being young loses the ball a fair bit doing that. Great engine, good goal threat about him if allowed. Can play box to box or defensive. Huge potential. Find it hard to understand why a united fan can’t see that hes one of the few positives of the season so far? Granted he’s not perfect but he’s developing

This is where the problem with United is. That description fits ashley young perfectly yet we praise Mctominay for it. We need more ability than passion at the club. Nothing wrong with passion when the player has vast ability.

Agree with the above--- Much more to worry about than mctominay, the boy is doing well and showing the desire we desperately need.
I could list 10 players in the first team who concern me more than him...

McTomminay has bit of composure in him, he doesn’t get panic when under pressure. Unlike Fred.
He’s better at aerial duel & holding the ball than Fred which also what McTomminay is good at but something Fred is very bad at them.
He also has shown some positive attitude to be United player.
Defensively McTomminay isn’t as impressive as Rice & Ndidi but he offered more than Fred.

Honestly, I wouldn’t dare to call McTomminay as a key player in the future but his job is providing steel in our midfield. Not providing creativity in midfield. Every team need this type of player, a player who can win the ball back & cover your creativity or playmaker player in defensive aspect.

Strengths:
  • Good in the air.
  • Tackles opposition
  • Intercepts, good
  • Clearances
Weaknesses:
  • Sometimes dispossessed
  • Control sometimes weak
I think his biggest weakness is he doesn't offer much going forward. He had put few good range shots but overall he's not an offensive midfielder who creates stuff. His passing is sometimes inconsistent too, but he's very good in the center of the park with him willing to do dirty work.

I love his no-nonsense approach to the game. He shys away from absolutely nothing. Loved his barging run in the first half.

He's really lacking in composure. There was a few instances where he rushed a pass and we lost possession.

Poor performance and went missing in second half. Lack of ability on the ball of both him and Fred is pretty shocking.

He had heart today as expected, but passing was surprisingly poor even by his standards. Rushed it too many times.

I like him a lot and he's a good player to have around but I hope his passing comes on in the next few years. Virtually every other aspect of his game has been really good to see this season, i just want a bit more authority and consistency on the ball. Think he had one of the lowest pass completions on the pitch today (60 something %). Did well off the ball and closing down though.

I thought he was decent today. Not his best game but way way better than the McTominay we first saw under Mourinho.

Like I said with Fred, not good enough on the ball but put the combative shift in today and did the best he could.

He's better than what he's shown yesterday. One of his most passive performances.
Yeah agreed. Thought he was decent first half and rather anonymous in the 2nd.

like others have stated he rushed a few passes and lost the ball. I’m sure he’ll correct that next weekend though

Not his best games, but I can hardly hold a grudge against this kid. His effort is always there and more responsibility should be put on 50m players next to him, not his fault that they look like amateurs.

If he can develop/improve his passing ability, he can be a very good player for us. Yesterday's game was so-so.

Frankly, I haven't been impressed by him in a while. He still looks lost a lot of times while defending. It was very annoying near the end when he was consistently late to challenge a lot of balls.

His biggest positive lately is his ability to drive the ball forward a couple of times every game.

For me, he is another in our midfield who would be fine as a squad player and normally shouldn't be given the amount of minutes he's getting now.

A nothing performance from him. He should be nowhere near the starting 11 but such is the state of our shambolic team that he 1st choice. No wonder we find ourselves in 13/14th

He isn't very good, probably a decent squad player. The standards at this club have dropped severely

The way he keeping hovering around where the ball is without actually doing anything while defending is a very infuriating. I would like to know what exactly was he doing when their attacker was embarrassing Maguire.

Got to say he might not be a great passerlike Carrick or a great defender like a Kante or anything particularly but he has that mentality and confidence where nothing seems to phase him. If he plays a few crap passes he just shakes it off and keeps on trying. Got to admire that about him Absolutely no fear and never hides.

Hopefully he can improve in these areas too. Carrick's passing developed in sharpness year by year.

Said in another thread, we're really lacking in leaders but he's the one player that actually tries to charge forward at times and never seems to be fazed. His passing is a bit erratic and you might say he plays it too safe at times but he does try to make things happen. Mata and Lingard in contrast look so passive at times.

This is the kind of player you get when you start to applaud players' effort. For me, he is indicative of Solskjaer's management career. Trash that needs to be binned along with Solskjaer. It is not good enough; it was problematic that people were accepting mediocrity. We are now accepting a few levels below mediocrity.

McTominay: a player who tries hard but has no ability.

Heard all this before with Darren Fletcher. He’s currently on the same trajectory as Fletch, so in a couple of years he could be a very good player.

if anything, because Scott has been thrust into starting every week, his development towards reaching his ceiling and staying there could be quicker.

But there won’t be convincing people like you, you know the saying, time will tell.
