Easily our best defender tonight. Should have scored and lost his marking once or twice but overall good I think.

I thought our defence was good today. We were the attacking team (inept attack) but had men forward and had to scramble as they countered. Their goal came from such a counter. Even for their goal, he managed to recover and play the percentages for their long range strike.

I realise that doesn’t fit in with the collective suicide after each loss.

Wonder what is he thinking now, leaving a top 4 team to relegation battle team for a world record fee.

Yes Leicester is sitting at 4th place, and we are only 2 points off the relegation zone!
Probably worried about his England career.

I hope for his sake we appointment a decent manager and start to look at the entire structure soon. We could find ourselves with Harry looking to move on quickly. I wouldn't blame him if things don't improve drastically in the next 12 months.

I can’t stop thinking, given our lack of activity - Is he the £80mil player we had to sign this Summer.

He probably reply and say we’re 5 points off 4th.

Missed a sitter and partly at fault for the goal. I blame Pereira more for It than him though.

All the stuff about sometimes it just doesn't go your way is just rubbish. We don't score from corner which makes me think we practise them far less than other clubs, is it any wonder McT misses a sitter and now Maguire misses a sitter? We clearly don't dedicate much time to them, you've also got Young's horrendous delivery as proof of this as well.

Sorry but hes a senior player with a big price tag. That header needs to be 1-0.

I thought he did good but he should have score that chance before half time. But he's not the reason we couldn't score. Our front 4 are the reason we couldn't score. Maguire & Tuanzebe to me are the only positive about the newcastle game.

Glad we got him. Our best player!
Agreed (on being glad to sign him, not that hes our best). We were dying for a CB like him for ages and between Lindelof and Tuanzebe, one of them will cement the spot as his partner IMO. We need to sort out a good chunk of the rest, but I'm very happy with our CBs and Wan Bissaka.

If Smalling did what Maguire did for their goal, he'd be crucified by the ones praising Maguire here. Still a good defender though. One of the best in the League.

I really like him. He's not infallible defensively but he has a set of cojones and drives us forward. From what I've seen so far, I still think Smalling is a better pure defender than him and would complement him with his athleticism. I don't think Lindelof particularly suits playing with him, there's not enough recovery pace between the two.

I still think you’d have been better partnering Smalling with Maguire?

Still think we should have invested in other areas than CB.
To spend £80mil on this guy given the makeup of the squad was foolish.

Firmino > Mane > Salah > VvD > Allison.

I like him but he’s not generational in terms of talent.

It was our most "loaded" position, albeit not with great quality but still. Up front, in midfield, it's a desert now. Maguire isn't gonna change our season, he's not gonna improve us.

Probably the right decision given that we are already lacking leadership in our squad. Maguire so far has shown good leadership on the pitch. I can see him being our captain next season.

I feel that the management saw how many goals we conceded and thought all we needed was to shore up our defence to start challenging, not knowing that selling all our attackers would lower our goal tally. If there was a choice at the start of the summer between bolstering attack or defence, I'd choose attack every time. I'd rather we lose/draw high scoring games than losing 1-0, drawing 0-0, etc while boring the life out of all of us.

That being said, at least we know our defence doesn't need that much more tinkering and we can fully focus on our attack from this point. Very happy we have Maguire will be a mainstay in the starting squad for years to come.

Should've joined City. Joining us in this moment was a bad career choice.

I do enjoy watching him,though.
For a tall, burly player he's very graceful with the ball and actually looks like he could belong in any top side ,which obviously cant be said for the majority of United players.

This and I am surprised to hear people saying Ole's signings were very good and so he should be given time on that basis. If Ole knew that he was going to have £70m net to spend and decided to splash it all on the Maguire and AWB he made a really stupid decision. I am sure the scouts would have found an equally talented defender for half the price. Now, after this 'upgrade' the team has a good defense but is really thin in attack and the results are showing.

You are just making assumption and jump into conclusion there. If 70m was our net spend going to be then I’m clueless how we aim on Sancho which was reported that we were planning to get him until Sancho changed his mind.

“Planning”.
Just as we planned to sign 5 players in the summer, or the other previous windows. If we were really planning on boosting our attack then we would have went for alternatives when we knew we wouldn’t be getting Sancho.

What’s your problem with my post? I don’t see any issue there.

We wouldn’t get Sancho but we had the money to get Sancho.

A tier 1 David Ornstein already said that we were in to sign Sancho until we are out of CL. In other word, we always had the money to sign a player who is worth at least 80m-100m.

That doesn't make any sense. Are you saying we decided not to sign a player half the price with the same talent because we had more money?

You are basing your assumption that we were going to have a net spend of more than 70m because of the rumor that were in for Sancho.

If we were planning on spending more than why didn’t we? We had the issue for the past 3 windows of having a very low net spend. The club were briefing on signing 5 players last summer, where are the 5 players?

It was reported by a tier 1 source Ornstein that we were in for Sancho. It's not just some random rumour.

There are many possibility reasons why we are not spending more. Why is it only one reason that you only want to believe that our budget is only about 70m? It's statement with no concrete proof. Why can't we say that Ed is incompetent with his job to secure our target? This isn't the first time, it happened before last year under Mourinho when we only secured Fred, Dalot & Grant as our signings, but we didn't get a centre back which a role that Jose wanted more than Fred.

What club's brief? We never made such a brief for 5 signings. No tier 1 has made this statement. You were only reading such a BS story which has led your argument to nothing but non sense.

I don't know how you came to that conclusion, I am saying Maguire was overpriced for his level and we didn't do enough research on cheaper alternatives. It's not like Rio who was clearly heads and shoulders above everyone in his generation at that time such a world record fee for a defender was justifiable. In the context of the team needing reinforcements in other areas the decision to spend so much on him was not the best we could have made.

Anyone are overpriced nowadays. We should have settle the transfer last year when he was at 60m. Even a centre back from Benfica Rúben Dias is priced for 60m and he’s less proven than Maguire. Issa Diop who also less proven than Maguire also priced for 60m. We could try to get some much cheaper defender and try to develop them but we already have plenty with Lindelof, Bailly & Tuanzebe in the squad.

I can see that we would like to settle the back four with experienced & leadership centre back like Maguire. Both Mourinho & Ole seem to agree in that aspect.

I came to that conclusion because that's what you wrote. You said you're sure the scouts could've found a player of equal talent for half the price. So someone knowingly made the decision not to do that. He's an excellent addition to the squad and there's no evidence that we spend our full budget. Our repeated attempts to sign additional players after securing Maguire suggests the exact opposite.

Beast! Well worth the fee.

Needs a proper partner ASAP. Him having to babysit Lindelof is a hindrance.
Maguire was man of the match!
But the baby sitting part is ironic as that is the only weakness I see with him: he doesn’t always cover so well for his partners.
