Life as a Brighton fan is getting a little bit frustrating. Over 70 percent possession at St James’ Park, clearly the better team, playing by far the better football and we come away with a goalless draw.
At least you did better than us :(

Another frustrating game that should have given us 3 points, but a stupid red card leaves us a man short with 50 odd minutes to go and of course Villa score 1 and then win it with last kick of the match. We looked by far the better team and were leading up until Mooy's two yellows in about 5 minutes and looked good for the draw, with the possibility of nicking a cheeky winner when we were down to 10.

There is a lot going right at Brighton at the moment, the players are full of confidence, we look good, our play is slick and positive, but it hasn't quite all clicked yet. It's also our second red card of the season which isn't great. The next couple of matches against Everton and Norwich are must wins though if we want to lift ourselves away from the bottom. Trossard returning from injury will open another set of attacking possibilities, I am still confident!

Always appreciate your take on the Brighton matches. I agree, they've been rather unlucky this season. Hopefully they'll turn a corner soon as I think this positive style of play requires confidence and faith in the manager which could quickly dissipate if their results don't start improving.

Thanks I'm glad someone sees them!

I think the second half of the season will see an upturn in results for us, at Swansea last season Potter's team was a bit hit and miss for the first half and then the players clicked and they improved. I hope we'll see the same here, but I think as long as he keeps us up he'll get at least a couple of seasons before Tony Bloom gets twitchy, the whole club have bought into Potter in a big way and fans are certainly enjoying watching us play. Old Trafford will be interesting when we visit in 3 weeks time!

It's so refreshing to read a rational, positive post for a change! If a match like that happened to us, it would all be Ole's fault.

You played well, were causing us massive issues between the lines first 30 minutes. I agree Mooy red changed the flow of the game as we then had a really good spell up to half time and eventually got back to 1-1.

Even second half we hardly threatened until right at the end (we are traditionally rubbish when playing 10 men though). Harsh defeat certainly.

Suppose it's a bit of a dilemma atm, your best finisher by a mile is on the bench but if you started Murray again the football in the final third probably wouldn't be as good?

Gutted with the result but it was always going to be hard with 10 men. Very proud with how the team played though, looked really good for majority of the match.

Re: the bold - Maupay has been great - finishing needs work but I think he'll get better and better. Murray will still play an important role this season but imo his days as a starter are over.

The way Potter has got Brighton playing is so refreshing to see. Webster and Dan Burn look class. Just need to start turning more of these performances into wins. But it's very encouraging so far.

Dan Burn has been a huge surprise to me, I saw him a bit in championship playing for at different stages Birmingham, Wigan and Fulham over 4 year period and he just looked a big lump with little football skill.

Shows how good the coaching is that he looks comfortable in a back 3. Guess maybe looking long term you might decide to cash in on Duffy or Dunk next summer.

I lost track of your other attackers btw, are Locadia and the Iran winger still at the club? I know Andone got loaned out (think he lost confidence of Potter after that stupid red card in August). What about Izquierdo? I remember being impressed with him in 17/18 but seems he's hardly played in last year! Think he's someone who would do well in your new system.

Locadia went on loan to Hoffenheim, Jahabakhsh (always have to google the spelling!) is still at the club but hasn’t had a premier league start under Potter, he played in a cup game. Izquierdo has been really unlucky with injuries and is out at the moment but still in the squad.

Agree with this, Maupay is probably better than Murray now especially in the system we play. The way he finds space between the lines and then puts through Connolly is excellent. He is always trying to find the space to be an attacking outlet for the midfield or the defence as they push forward. Murray is a class finisher, but doesn't have the speed of movement to fit into the system. I think Murray's best premier league season got him 13 goals, Maupay has 3 already and is getting better with every game and he's turning into a real team player. I think our recruitment in the closed season was fantastic, we have so many more attacking options now than we did last season.

BHA not getting the results their play deserves, but with an unbiased analysis only by one point, so still would be in the relegation mire, made worse because Sheff U are doing much better than expected. Quite encouraging though with Dunk playing well. Three at the back has made the defence more porous (holes where the full backs used to be) and not proven the strike force any less shot shy. Injuries and dismissals have hindered results. I did not envisage two wingers, but no wingers at all has blunted the attack.
Prognosis: when Potter gets his best team decided, it will get better rather than worse. Players to watch: Dunk, Webster, Connolly, Groß, Maupay. And Izquierdo (if he is not permanently crocked).

PS: Spurs were really dreadful and 3-0 was being kind, or shot shy. I think there are some alarming Brighton deficiencies at times, but not been found out yet. Best game was 1-1 at home to West Ham where VAR robbed Trossard of a good goal.

Best improvement is playing out of the press. BHA were not bad before, but retracted into deep defence too readily under Houghton.

I expect Brighton under Potter will be very similar to Bournemouth under Howe; play some nice stuff most weeks but always prone to leaking goals which will ultimately leave you around lower mid-table. That is not necessarily a bad thing and I am sure you’d take it for the next few seasons.

What I find interesting is that there are some very similar sized clubs in the league now with very different approaches that, other than the odd purple patch, seem to stay bunched together in the final table. I put the likes of us both, Burnley, Bournemouth, Watford, Southampton and Newcastle within that and you can easily divide those teams out in to defined playing styles, but we all finish in a cluster which says to me that the right way of playing is the one that achieves the best results. All this talk of good football only goes so far, so he does need to pick up some results soon.

What also remains to be seen is how much Uncle Tony will be willing to back Potter in the future as well. For all the grief we get on Northstandchat (I am a lurker:D) about our wage bill Bloom has chucked A LOT of money at Brighton, probably an unsustainable amount relative to the income of the club. It’s a similar story at Bournemouth too, they blow a fortune every year on new players; way in excess of what they could afford without a Rich Russian backing them. Typically speaking the kind of players they need for their style cost much more than the kind in Burnley’s squad for example. Can Brighton sustain that kind of spending every year?

Brighton made a profit in the last 2017-18 account whereas Palace and Bournemouth made losses despite finishing higher in the table. And it was not because Brighton sold any first team players.

As @Perseus says we made a profit 2017-18 and it wasn't the sale of players, it was purely down to broadcasting revenue which jumped from 29.2 million to 139.4 million. Match day revenue also went up by 25% but it was our first year in profit pretty much ever, which is why we felt safe spending approx 60 million in transfers (lots of which did not work out). But some of that outlay is still to come back as Andone and Locadia's moves away from the club will turn permanent at some point.

We have also signed new shirt and stadium sponsorship deals with Amex which put us in the top ten sponsorship earners in the league which is a massive achievement for a club like us.

So yes our outlay on players on players has been large, but not extravagent (approx 100 million over 2 seasons) But Tony Bloom is a local lad, he is a fan and is dedicated to the club (I went to school with him) He is also extremely well off.

He along with Dan Ashworth have a clear long term plan for the club and show no interest in going anywhere, it's a plan that fits Potter very well as well, in fact it's something clubs like Utd could learn from!

To answer your bit in bold, we now have a great blend of experience and youth, Webster, Trossard and Maupay are both young but experienced players. We have Alzate, Connolly coming through from the youth teams and Clarke as well. Mix those in with the likes of Dunk, Stephens etc and the balance is good it also means we shouldn't have to spend so much in the coming transfer windows replacing aging players, we can either cash in and replace or extend contracts. Where as if you look at Palace apart from Ryan Iniss who's gone back to Newport on loan all your signings are over the age of 25. Bournemouth on the other hand have gone even younger with their transfers, it's a clear and sensible strategy for clubs our size (though we're bigger than them!)

The annual accounts are one thing but I am sure I read that Brighton have the second overall largest debt in English football; ironically behind our friends on this forum. It’s just all owed to Bloom’s company in loans. Google it.

I like what Brighton are doing to be fair, the facilities and the academy are great. We have taken the slightly different path
of buying experienced premier league players for reasonable enough fees but some big wages. The disaster for us has been Benteke who has been an utter shambles for £30m and 120k a week over the last two seaspns. He did keep us up in his first season with 17 goals though, people (me included) forget that sometimes.

Otherwise we have spent £18m on players in two years, sold one for £50m and worked hard to reduce our wagebill which has been a big issue for us. We are in our 7th season in the top flight though, so again the right approach is probably the one that keeps you where you need to be.

Yes Brighton have the second highest debt in the league (at 207 mill in Feb this year) 2 million more than Arsenal and 6 mill in debt more than Liverpool, and again you're right, we're 288 million behind Man Utd way out there out in first place with 495 mill.

But the terms of the debt and who the debt is with is important context here. Our debt is to Tony Bloom rather than to the banks. The loans are interest free (unlike Utd who've paid hundreds of millions in interest alone), which makes a massive difference and there is no schedule or timeline of repayment. The debt was stacked up trying to get out of the championship and financing the Amex, and having your own stadium and getting to the premiership are both massive moves that have made the club alot more profitable in the long run.

We've had our own history of being a terribly run club, if Utd fans think Woodward is bad they should google Archer and Bellotti (utter cnuts), but after the fantastic stewardship of Knight, who brought us back from the brink of extinction, rebuilt us changing our trajectory completely, Bloom's time in charge has just added to that and we are reaping the benefits of being one of the best run clubs in the leagues.

Add the Ashworth and Potter revolution to the above and I have never been more optimistic about the future of this club.

Football can be funny sometimes, last weeks last minute goal against us at Villa was cruel, this week we do the same to Everton and take the three points!.

So much to be pleased about today, it was probably one of our worst performances of the season but we had luck on our side. Gross' free kick was fantastic, though Pickford probably should have saved it, the penalty was a bit harsh if I'm honest and the own goal was also a slice of luck. But you make your own luck and at 2-2 with 5 mins to go the old BHAFC would have sat back happy with the point, but we pushed and pushed and finally got the goal.

Seeing Trossard come back from injury looking sharp was a huge boost, he is a different class to our other forward options, and also seeing Schelloto back on the right was heart warming, he was in tears at the end of the match hugging the physio's that have overseen his return from a horrible cruciate injury. The young lads Connolly and Alzate also looked good again even on a team wide off day.

We didn't have the usual slickness and precise passing that Potter normally demands today and I think a draw would have been a fair result, but looking back through some of the posts on here so far this season, we were definitely due a but of luck!

You deserved to win after the penalty but before that we were in complete control. No excuses for us for losing as we should have had the game wrapped up before we gave you that penalty chance. You’re a good team and should have enough to stay up but you didn’t deserve the 3 points on the weekend based on about 70-80 mins of football.

I couldn't agree more, I'm not sure the penalty was really a penalty either and for the vast majority of the game you were the better team. We were sloppy in possession and never got our passing game going properly. I think a draw would have been a fairer result, but we've been so unlucky in games where we should have won this season, this time we got the other side, we should have drawn or lost, but luck for once was definitely on our side!

Was Duffy dropped or injured? Connolly looks a serious prospect. Probably Ireland's two best goal threats.

Yep, and no taking away from your last 10 minutes either. It was excellent and that determination will keep you up. I wish we had half of that, we would be top 10 rather than languishing at the bottom.

Duffy is injured, but he's going to struggle to regain his place. Connolly looks fantastic, just hope he can keep it up, replacing Murray is a big ask.

Potter has revolutionised our team, I'm just terrified that Ole will get the boot towards the end of this season and Utd come sniffing around the next young bright thing!

Depends where you are viewing the penalty. It looked a cynical kick from East Lower and it would from the away end as well. Connolly went off injured. Both teams looked more likely to score when the other was attacking. Still the Everton looked the best side at the Amex this season. They disrupted the BHA rhythm until they tired. Comparing the styles of play, I thought we would get mugged and we very nearly did.

Agree Everton looked good and we played probably our most disjointed game of the season!

Everton stopped the Albion from playing which is why the Albion were disjointed. Everton were effective for about an hour rather than good. Miles better than under Koeman though.

I remember saying just before HT, that Everton had most of the play by a fraction but Brighton looked the most dangerous.

Burnley were similarly disruptive for half an hour. Expect the same problems again at home.

Just thinking about the line up today and realised with Trossard coming back we could have him, Connolly and Mapauy - that’s a pretty tasty forward line when you think about it. Then add choices in midfield with Propper back, Mooy available again, Alzate playing brilliantly at the moment and of course Stephens as reliable and solid as ever, March is also available and Murray. That’s real strength and depth for us, and shows actually that the worries about losing Andone, Locadia and Knockaert in the summer we’re unfounded.

Really enjoying our team right now

Theres a lot to be positive about, that's for sure!

Predictions for today's game? I'm going for 2-1. Think Norwich will be well up for this but their defence means the likes of trossard, maupay and Connolly should have some joy.

Really enjoying our team right now
Do you think Jay Molumby will get a look in in the near future? He's been pure class for Irelands underage teams, sounds like he's doing great at milllwall and was close to the team under Houghton.

Yesssss. Vital result. Must admit, thought it was going to be another game where they dominated but couldn't get the goal. Back-to-back wins and above united now :nervous:

Propper was brilliant, and Duffy did well coming on. Hope Webster injury isn't serious, looked a real nasty one.

Really impressed with the team today and showed the strength and depth of our squad. Apart from one Norwich shot that hit the bar, we dominated that first half and Mapauy could have had a hat trick! Alzate grows with every game and was a candidate for MoM.

I saw someone on Northstand chat had written that the second half was like liquid football! Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but we did look good. Then Trossard coming on was the icing on the cake, he is a seriously good signing and adds a very different dimension to our attack. Once we’d scored once there was no question who was going to win, Trossard’s goal was good but Duffy scored an Ian Wright style goal, sliding in on a free kick and toe poking it past Krul.

Up to 8th and it feels fully deserved, we have tough run of games coming up now including Utd, Arsenal and Leicester. But honestly the way we’re playing at the moment, though I wouldn’t expect to take all the points, we shouldn’t be scared of anyone right now.

Too liquid for me, I was disguised as a blue seat (gusting Force 11 and heavy rain). Reports said it was better than it looked like on TV. Norwich away played much more defensive and I could see why they got a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth.

Ole has got his work to do tactically on Sunday. I don't know whether the Albion will play deep defence or possession football? Or both.

BHA on the same points and GD as two seasons ago.

I think Ole's going to shithouse a 1-0 win over you lot this weekend. Maybe 2-1. It'll be very close and we will 110% score a penalty.

I know that I am being a pessimistic whiner, but I feel like that is our only hope. I don't see us creating many chances. Maybe we can get out with a hard fought 0-0? We should just park the bus every week and pray for some checkbook miracles in January.
