How about instead of selling Pogba and replacing him with 2 worse midfielders, we try everything to keep him and sign a top midfielder to dictate the game and play Pogba in that 'loose' position, not exactly a 10 but he has freedom to affect the game with less defensive responsibilities.

Struggling to decipher how selling him and replacing him with one or two of Ndidi, Madisson, Soumare, Havertz etc. makes any sense. Havertz may become world class, but Pogba is in a completely separate league from these guys in terms of ability and how he can impact the game. If we keep playing him in a midfield 2, he will never reach the potential that he has for this club as it's just not his position.

United need to figure out where's best to play him, and we need to buy players to balance out a midfield with Pogba in it. Think of that Juventus midfield he was in. Pirlo, Vidal and Pogba. Pirlo, the dictator and DLP, fills a role that Pogba can't. Vidal, box to box, tackler, but a great passer and all round midfielder. Lastly, Pogba, his game at Juve was defined in moments of brilliance, an unbelievable pass or distance goal.

The problem here is that we expect Pogba to fill all of those roles when he's in the team. It's just not possible and he's always going to fall below our expectations as our midfield has been so shocking around him
This is something I agree with. Why not try to build a functioning and balanced team, where Pogba, Martial and Rashford are the spice on top. Not to build around Pogba, but to get the best out of our best players.

For all of you who want him shipped out, do you expect United to do Pogba and RM a favour and just sell him at whatever price? There are three parties involved in this potential transfer. Pogba hasn’t been good enough consistently, but who has on our team? It’s still a team game. It’s also kind of a catch 22 situation for him, he can’t deliver consistently, either of his own accord, but also because we, as a team, have failed again and again. With this in mind, who other than RM would be in for him? Looking at the Lukaku situation, we’re not going to let him go on the cheap, and it didn’t really seem like RM were willing to pay up. A weird situation for sure, what’s even stranger imo, is people actively wishing him sold.

It’s as if people haven’t watched the past 3+ years. Taking the reasons why out of the debate, there’s no question that any plan there was has not worked and he’s underperformed, particularly against his hype and price tag. Yes, he’s far from the only one and is very talented. Maybe under the right conditions he would be (I have my doubts) but it’s pretty obvious that won’t happen here.

We should just draw a line under it...no chance we turn into a contender over the next few years and it’s just best for all parties that he moves on and it gives us a chance to reinvest and him a chance to prove himself in a team ready to challenge now...whether we’ll do that is another thing but I see little change in making him stay.

He either needs to commit himself fully to the club or we need to cash in. Right now and for most of his time here he hasn't been fully invested, so we get equal measures of brilliance and frustration. His consistency is an issue, but players as talented as him that's par for the course.Problem for him is he's playing for a utd team that has been poor. This isn't Juve or France where if he goes missing he's got top class players who will inevitably pick up the slack. This is also a league were right now top 4 is a dog fight. At Juve he was winning the league before it started, 2 of his seasons there they won by 17 pts.We know he wants to go to Real, we know Zidane wants him. Either Real pay what we want or we move on and he commits to us. There is no doubt the club will strengthen in the next few transfer windows. I'd love to see Pogba with quality players around him in our mid, esp ones who will assist him in creating chances . Its a stick or twist moment for him, problem is the decision is not in his hands. It's in whether Real will pay for him, they didn't in the summer.

Anyone else think we've seen the last of Pogba? Feels like it's been ages.
Agreed, but the injury might be a good thing because it is pretty clear he wants out and this will give Ole an understanding of how he wants to / needs to play post Pogba.

It might be a blessing in disguise making replacing him easier than if he was tearing it up on a weekly basis.

I don't think Pogba will ever show his true capabilites at Manutd.

My thoughts are pure speculation but I wonder how much of an affect the Sanchez signing/wages played a part in players performances including Pogba.

Massive. One of the worst footballing decisions made.

It made no sense commercially or footballing wise.

You sign a 29 year old LW when you have Martial / Rashford at that time who could play that role? What does that do to confidence?

It’s actually bizarre... some people criticised Kane for staying at Spurs. Citing a lack of ambition and being happy with a pay bump. But people expect the likes of Pogba, soon Martial if has a great season, to want to stay despite us being much further away from winning anything then Spurs.

Don’t give me that “we’re Man Utd we can get back to where we were 6 years ago very quickly” Liverpool thought the same thing in 91, 92, 93, they were still saying the same thing in 96, 97, 98, and into 2001, 2002, even in 2011 the way they spoke was like they still hadn’t grasped that 20 years had passed, in that time Blackburn won and got relegated, Arsenal won playing attractive football, Chelsea and City emerged
You realize we have won more than Spurs recently right?

You also realize we pay way more than Spurs right?

Manchester United can still pay more than most clubs and even in these very average/mediocre periods we have won trophies or got into finals.

Will Pogba want to stay? Or course not - he wants out, I'd say that much is evident from this injury layoff and the noises that are creeping out of his camp.

Does that mean that United are finished? Far from it. All it means is we can rebuild a midfield based around the new aim of getting in young and hungry players.

Everybody thought great, Sanchez for the right wing and no more Lingard! then came the first match and Sanchez LW with Martial dropped :(

I was all for it at the time, seeing Sanchez as a winner. We all knew how bad our RW was, i was thinking here comes a top player to play RW.

Never in a million years did i think we would sign Sanchez to play him LW.

You have to remember, at that time, Martial was in very good form, he'd just scored lovely match-winners vs Everton away, Stoke home & Burnley away back-to-back.

I thought he finally had the backing of Mourinho. Look up the highlights, he was sublime.

The first game vs Spurs seeing Sanchez play LW with Martial shunted to the right and then dropped afterwards... I know i thought what a cnut Mourinho is, can only imagine some of the players weren't too pleased too.

It completely upset the balance of the team, we never recovered and that started the demise of Mourinho imo so yeah pretty colossal mistake by Mourinho.

Exactly, the area of the pitch we were lacking in, we signed someone to play in an area we had young talent?

I do remember Martial during that period, that's when he signed his bumper contract and was saving Jose in some games.

Sanchez literally upset them two, Martial never performed for Jose after that because he didn't have the confidence.

This is one thing Ole has to be given credit for, all the stick that has come his way for playing Rashford, he has stuck to his guns and said I trust Rashford and Martial to lead the line.

They have no excuses, and if they become players we all hope they do, Ole will have to get alot of the credit for putting faith.

In saying that it could also come back and bite him for giving being naive?

Only time will tell. I am in the camp of getting rid of Lukaku and giving these 2 a chance.

I still can't understand it, only way to explain it is Mourinho literally doesn't value young talent, even if they're performing for him, he'll still cast them aside given the chance. Which is just not what i expect of a Man Utd manager.

Oh definitely, that's the single biggest thing i'm most impressed about with Solskjaer's management. His faith in young players, particularly his mentoring of Martial is great. It's the same for all young players, but you can really see the difference Ole having full faith in him makes. He is having a big influence on Martial from the looks of it. He seems a lot more focused. I'm really excited to see his development this season.

I don't think having full faith in young talent you believe in can be called naive. I certainly wouldn't hold it against Solskjaer if it doesn't work out. I just wish he got a veteran striker in the summer who's willing to play a sub role here and there. Like how we had Larsson & Solskjaer himself when Rooney & Ronaldo were coming through. That would have been ideal imo.

Yeah... Not only was Martial not playing as nr. 9 but as he was doing good on the left, there came Sanchez, Lingard still on the right. Mourinho, Europa league and all, was a disaster for this club.

Pogba will be here next season i'm sure. Still 2 years on his contract (with the extension) and Ole seems to be confident of this. Also, he is very important from a marketing POV so unless we get 150mil he is going nowhere.

Someone has to pay the price though, if so, I’m sure we’d be willing to deal. I’d still like to keep one of our best players though, seeing as we have duct tape like solutions in several other positions.

Agreed, Ole has put real faith in Martial, he has said he is a CF and now he is going to get games there considering he stays fit.

The only reason I made the naive comment was because he has gone into the season with help, like you siad a vetran striker who could help us out, play a impact role would be ideal. A short term deal with Mandzukic will be ideal.

Anyone else get the feeling he is going to be injured a lot this season and take his time coming back?

The 600k ask is just to make sure we say no. Have a bad feeling we will have to cut our losses and sell cheap after this season, if the tactic is to stay on the treatment bench
Prediction coming true?

Will end at Madrid with a same level of performance of Hazard
In Real and Spain he would be a monster. His stats there would be amazing. Despite everything i want him to stay. He is pure class.

But he will be back in Juve this summer

I will be glad when him and his drama is gone. He could have put it to bed so many times and he refuses to do so.

Some people are saying he should be made captain ahead of Maguire when he can’t be bothered to go and watch the team 20 miles up the road.

I don’t have any vitriol for him and won’t be calling him any names, but he is 27 and still hasn’t had one brilliant season. Gifted, but tremendously flawed. I want players here that are willing to fight for the shirt and lead by example.

I won’t have many fond memories of his time here when he goes.

A great talent but he’s not given enough of a shit to be considered anywhere near being a great player and he’s played so little this season that he’s sort of phased himself out. I’ve always been in the camp that feels he’s indispensable and we should build around him but Pogba is not the type to build around or have players look up to. He’s a player that needs to be thrown into an already great team and then suddenly he won’t be as “injured”. He’s always been about his brand more than his club.

It’s time to trade Pogba. Yes, we can wait until summer and perhaps get £120m for him but we can also trade him now. His injured but I guess Real will take the chance and get him now vs Juventus getting him this summer.
I see us getting Isco, Gareth Bale and perhaps some cash.

Part of me thinks he would consider staying if we signed Sancho and a proper DM in the summer, however to fund a move for Jadon we would have to sell Paul no doubt about that.

Yes, let's hope he'll do us the favour of deigning to stay. God knows where we'll be without him.

As much as I like Pogba, we should have sold him last summer itself. I mean this season has been as good as not having him in the team. He's played a handful of games and is on top wages. We should have sold him to Madrid or Juventus back then and brought in some much needed reinforcements. As far as transfer decisions go, we always seem to be behind by a couple transfer windows. We took a year to get Maguire. We took an extra transfer window to get Bruno. Getting the deadwood out, we've taken ages. Sigh...

I think Woodward and team are committed to a long term plan. No more short term bandaids. This is why they have spent the initial efforts in clearing the deadwoods --- to have a cleaner slate to enable them to plan and spend with more visibility going forward. And keeping contracts a lot tighter like in the case of Bruno's or a short term loan to patch up any unplanned scenarios like Rashford's long term injury.

I don’t know why we are wasting so many pages on the guy. He is already gone and we probably should never have bought him back. Time to let go, sell up and move on!

I think most are accepted he's gone it's just we have no faith in the management replacing him in any way.

You hope we go get 2/3 starters like sancho/havertz and then tondeli/camvenga and an established player like Saul or a new lb with the money but we'll end up with Maddison for 100 and longstaff for 60 for Brexit fc

He's supposed to be in his prime and yet lacks consistency in his play.

I honestly don't think he's shown a sustained period of great games for more than 15 games before being he starts to sulk as he doesn't get his way on the pitch.

Gonna call it now. Pogba to Madrid in the summer for Bale and 50m.
Good price, I would even give more, but if you have not shown interest in Bale last summer, it seems difficult that you will now.
In the same way it would be reasonable to lower the price of Pogba but not so much.

I think united will sell this summer for sure, probably knowing that they won't get anywhere near the 150m asking price. I think a deal like this works as they acquire a well known, marketable player in a position they need and some cash as well. Just have a hunch that this could happen.

Not only that, it means decent players like Herrera can ask for £300k a week, because there's a flop contributing nothing on more. It also means we're stuck with said flop, because unless he is subsidized no one will have him.

Should be a lesson, but we did it again, giving our goalkeeper £375k, despite keepers in better form making less than half of that, and having two other very good keepers ourselves. It's not like our backs were against the wall.

Pogba, being our star outfield player, probably feels he deserves to be the club's highest earner. If he's not offered that he may feel unappreciated ( Not saying that is his issue, but probably plays a part) .

A disorganized wage structure is a recipe for discontent, and is bound to affect team performance.
