If they're going to pull out of anything, the world club cup is much more of a Mickey Mouse "trophy". The should send the kids to Qatar.
maybe, maybe when against the FA cup, but against the league cup, the world cup wins.

No sympathy from us. They get it all their own way usually. I don't wish individuals injuries but I dearly hope their squad is depleted by Christmas.

It's a charity shield/super cup type meaningless money grab.

Of course better to win it than not but nobody is bothered if they lose or impressed if they win.
Heh. I agree it's no big trophy but still, being Champions of the World is no small thing. Also there's Continental pride on the line

You fecking bottlers

For those unaware, the reason the for fixture pileup (and the reason there wasn't a pileup in 2008/09) is because there wasn't meant to be a Club World Cup this year.

When FIFA announced the 24 team 2021 Club World Cup, the idea was to make the CWC a quadrennial tournament like the World Cup. Originally 2020 and 2019 CWCs were going to be skipped.

So the FA, the Football League etc scheduled their competitions and then FIFA announced it was going to be played this year after all

Also a more normal way to resolve this would be to move Aston Villa vs Liverpool back to 7-8 January (i.e. the semi-final first leg), then move the semi-final first leg to 28-29 January (i.e. the semi-final second leg), and move the semi-final second leg back to 4-5 February (i.e. the FA Cup 4th round replay date).

Final is 1 March

That resolves the problem as long as Liverpool don't need a replay in the 4th round. But if they do, the standard FA Cup method is just to move the 4th round replace tie to the 5th round and the 5th round tie to the 5th round replay etc. So that's not unsolvable either.

But clearly there are stronger forces here than logistics. The League Cup don't want their semi-finals moved about.

Nah we still hold the record for the League cup but the WCW doesn't come round often and we've never won it. The last time we lost to Sao Paulo in 05' still leaves a bitter taste, we had 3 goals ruled offside, 1 definitely should have stood. This time might be harder with meeting Flamengo/River Plate in the semi's.

The league cup needs to be scrapped. It’s a waste of time. Two domestic cup competitions are not needed.
Agreed. There’s absolutely no need for two domestic cup competitions. Added to that the FA cup is reasonably more prestigious than your run of the mill domestic cup competition, so you’re left wondering what is the point of the league cup?
Only fans of a team like United would say something like this.
Teams outside of the top six in the Premier League do actually exist.
Teams like Colchester United exist, teams like Burton Albion exist and the league cup gives those clubs the opportunity to go on a money spinning cup run that makes the world of difference to them financially. It also gives their fans the opportunity to go away and face teams like United. You try telling Swansea, Colchester, Bradford, Burton or Bristol City fans the league cup is shit and needs to be scrapped because poor old Champions of Europe Liverpool have to play two games in 48 hours that one time in 2019....
If the big clubs don’t like the league cup because they have to play too many games. Play 11 of the 200 under 18’s they have on their books, half of whom they took from football league clubs.
It’s seriously cringe and embarrassing anytime a manage of one of the big clubs in England whinges about cup completions causing “too many games”.

I prefer the league cup to the FA cup, especially now it’s straight to penalties

Smaller clubs exist in other leagues as well and they get by fine enough with only one cup competition.

It’s not about “getting by just fine”. A cup run equals significant cash influx that can eventually lead to promotions and even save clubs from going out of business. Do some research on Bradford, Exeter etc.

That's 15 games in the next 58 days.
Or, if you count from after the coming international break, 14 games in 43 days between November 23rd and January 5th. That's literally two games every week for six weeks straight and another two games squeezed in for fun. Utter madness.

Its ridiculous, how can you play two games in two days, let alone the second game being in a different country. I'm not a Liverpool fan but from a neutral point of view it's a farce. They could easily move the League cup game to January or something.

I think it's Liverpool who prefer to play it in December. If it were easy to play the game in January, it might have been done. But Liverpool fear fixture congestion in January/February and are willing to avoid the risk of getting tired and suffering injuries for the run in.

The standard of the Brazilian league really isn't anything to be worried about!
A cake walk for Liverpool and a nice rest midseason for some of the first team regulars.

The more it inconveniences them the better, but Klopp does have a point with all this. It is ridiculous how little the FA does to help English teams in international competitions. 2 games in 2 continents within 24 hours is just stupid and could be easily fixed if the FA wanted to help.

I would be more than happy to shut the League Cup down altogether, or restrict it to The Championship and below. Technically as the EFL Cup, PL teams shouldn't be in it anyway.

I don’t sympathise with him. Don’t want to be in the competition you get for winning the CL, then don’t win the CL. Fecking moany prick. You’re all paid a fortune just get on with it. He’s utterly insufferable.

By the way. Never knew why we didn’t just play reserves in FA Cup (2000) . Weren’t we drawn against Rotherham or so lower league team?
United pulled out before the competition commenced (1999) on the advice of the FA and to avoid fixture congestion. If United played reserves in the cup, the other clubs would've complained and asked the same practice to be applied in the league during January.

The strange thing was the FA Cup that season was moved forward so third rounds took place in November or it may have been December. So United could have entered the competition as normal but January would've been a big headache for organisers.

Just get on with playing two games, on two continents 21 hours apart. Get real, it's f*cking ridiculous, not because it is Liverpool, because its the same lack of any procactivity from those in charge.

I think the fury is with the fact that this was raised in September & the FA, Carabao etc did F*ck all until the inevitable happened.

I think it’s fair to say your opinion would be different if this was us being put in this position. :D Klopp is a whinging prick most of the time, but on this occasion he does have a point.

This is horrible decision from FA and horrible behaviour. They clearly punish Liverpool for being succesful at the highest level. I really dont like Liverpool, but I respect them for what they achieved with Klopp and FA casually throwed them out of the domestic cup for no good reason whatsoever. Qatar is +3 time zone and flight from Liverpool to Qatar is like 7 hours long. Its just absurd.

They can do it, they have the squad to do it, and travel is luxury for the wealthy. It’s really no big deal at all. Just a game of football, professional cyclists ride up the fecking Alps day after day in the Tour de France, in six-hour long stages, which is 10x the exertion and difficulty of playing two soft 90 minutes games of football back to back. Other sports such as NHL has games night after night. I’m sick of managers complaining about it. It won’t kill them to play two games in consecutive days. Maybe Klopp should take up a different sport that’s a bit easier on him, poor baby.

Are you serious? Liverpool have the softest Christmas fixture list every single year, they have the biggest breaks between games compared to every other team. This is the first year they’ve ever had any kind of adversity, they’re given every advantage all the time.

Great post.

The whole reason this is a perfectly viable solution is because big teams like Liverpool are so much wealthier than the majority of the competition and have amassed all the best global quality (making a game against a top Brazilian side fairly routine) and stock-piled all the best emerging domestic talent (majority would comfortably start for 90% of clubs in the league structure). There is a reason Liverpool prefer this option than something that imposes on their league commitments.

This is they entire problem summed up in one post.

You are normalising playing two games in less than a day because it is done in other sports. Put it into perspective, whats your thoughts on Man United's fixture against Villa getting moved from the Sunday to the Friday night after playing away to Astana on the Thursday.

it's mental
