Definitely not ready to be a starter but so glad he can bag some minutes for experience.

Think hes a few years away from bring ready to be honest. Some youngsters step up and look ready physically, technically, of whatever else but some just look like kids out there and hes one of them IMO. No surprise really, players in his position don't usually step up until their early 20's.

Yeah he's got bags of time on his side.

His stats for his time on the pitch...

23/27 passes completed 85% completion
2/2 passes into final third completed
2/2 duels won
2/2 interceptions won

He's neat and tidy on the ball and doesn't shy out of tackles.

Basically what I'm trying to portray is he's got a solid base to build from moving forwards.

Definitely needs a loan, perhaps in January. He’s almost 19, so not a baby, and needs to play regular senior football away from the pressure of a big club.

He’s got a great future ahead of him, and has all the tools and passing range to sustain a career at the very top level, but so far in the first team he’s looked really stiff on the ball and hesitant in his passing, which is completely understandable.

This; players like Lewis Cook, Kalvin Phillips and Doucoure would be good value additions to pad out the midfield in the meantime - within a few years Garner could eclipse them all, but for now he needs experience elsewhere.

Except he wasn't that neat and tidy. Saw him underhit a few passes that his teammates could only just get to under pressure, causing them trouble. Those don't show up in the stats.

This is how I see it too.

Great prospect but maybe not confident enough to regularly play with the first team. Like you and many others suggest a loan will do him good.

Let me get this straight.

Fans on here are saying he is not ready to start because he is 19? He hasn't had experience.

Yet, I have seen alot of posts previously about signing Longstaff? £40m for a player with less than a years prem experience?

Surely the way our season is going, we could give Garner the opportunities to see if he can adapt and hack the PL before spending that much on Longstaff who is 3 years older?

You guys keep doing this and it's nuts.

First it was Neymar mk2 Angel Gomes who could save our season and just hit the ground running - of course it didn't work but hey it happens right.

Then it was Chong who destroyed Skriniar that one time in a friendly so surely he must be better than relegation level and will do well in the Pl! - went on to play extremely poorly and will without a doubt be shipped out in the summer.

Then AGAIN you guys did it with Greenwood and everyone said yeah he will definitely make it here because he gaits about like Van Persie so he can be second choice striker at 17 its cool. - zero impact in the PL.

Now you want to ruin the development of another youngster with literally no first team experience by throwing him on in the by far worst team we've had for at least 30 years???

Our academy prospects are not better than the mid and bottom table teams first team players (some of our first teamers aren't either...), stop lying to yourselves. Every time we hype these youths up and push managers to play them only for it to inevitably back fire when they play poorly and start getting abuse.

Academy players should never be relied upon like this and only get introduced in easier games with less pressure or on loan.

Aside from Rashford we've barely had a talent come through and be a first team player for a decade so let's bring back expectations to more realistic levels.
Mate, Young players need to play consistently from the bench firstly, to gain confidence until they are ready. Playing before an audience of 76,000 in the stadium and millions more watching on television can have a big influence on any young player.
He has to gain confidence first, then he is ready.

Properly cnuting it at your teammates is something that ramps up in proper 1st team football. I think he can probably manage it.

He looks very natural in that CM role, and seems to have the necessary footballing intelligence to reach the top. Will be very interesting to see him play when he gets physically ready for the PL, coupled with more experience.

No opinion so far. I'm not seeing him for long enough to be honest. Or at least he isn't involved enough either, I'll reserve judgement.

Need him to start in both our remaining 2 Europa League games and get at least 60-70 minutes per game now that we have qualified before I can really start to judge him.

I think we need to give him more of of these cameos until the season ends, if a 26 year old Fred who has played in the CL needed a year to settle down what of a young kid starting out. Maybe loan him next season but let's see how he takes to first team football this term and try not judge him after a couple of appearances.

Yeah I'd like to see Garner starting along with Gomes, Williams and Chong. Greenwood isn't as necessary as he gets regular minutes in the league, but he'll likely play and rest Rashford and Martial.

Also saw several times how he anticipated the Partizan pass, so putting the receiving player under immediate pressure, in fact he won the the ball on at least one occasion, but anticipation is also not shown on stats.

A loan to the Championship would be good. Also Chong and Gomes to Holland and Greenwood to somewhere abroad too. It's a travesty that we have left ourselves in a position where this can't happen. Laird needs a loan too (the forgotten guy in many ways but he is stupidly talented). Only Williams is ready to be involved little by little.

A CAM in his youth, B2B in his prime, and a deep lying playmaker in his old days.

Seems like we have a new Scholes here.

He's a pretty handy CB too.

I'm a bit reluctant to say it because I think Scholes is one of the best players of his generation but Garner reminds me alot of Scholes, maybe defensively more aware and with a little less vision but his talent and potential are unbelievable. I'm pretty certain he'll be a first name on the team sheet player for us, barring injury or something else fecking up his development.

I don't see the Scholes comparison at all. They're about as different in style as midfielders can get.

Scholes when he was second striker is different from Scholes in deep lying playmaker.

What I was saying is that James Garner now looks more like a CAM rather than a complete midfielder.

Scholes started out as an attacker wasn't he?

Scholes was a striker when he started out. Garner a central midfielder or centre back.

Scholes was a very technical player. Garner is an athletic all rounder. Garner is more Keane/Carrick than Scholes.

He's certainly one for the future. He still looks a bit nervous when he gets a chance to play with us. When he gains confidence he will be very good.

Their athleticism is the main difference though. Their are clips on YouTube of Garners higights 2 years in a row in the youth teams, and he dictates games from deep with the effortlessness that Scholes did on the senior team with ease.

Sure, we've not seen that yet from Garner, and likely won't for several years yet, but I think he'll turn into a very similar style of player, it's just the level he'll perform it at that is up for debate for me.

Garner doesn’t have technique? he slings the ball around the ball with ease and hits the ball as clean as anything. Technique is one of his best traits!

Indeed. He's got a very good technical level. That said, I'd say he's closest to Carrick in style.
I think that’s what people expected at first, but he seems to be so good at scoring recently I think him being that deep is wasted.

He will eventually settle into that type of DLP role, but right now I’d have him as a box to box.
