The Scottish league get's sneered at a lot from fans everywhere outside Scotland, and while many of the teams up here aren't great it's brilliant to finally have two very good Old Firm sides again. Last night was a huge night for Scottish football. Due to a complicated family history I have an affinity with Rangers but many close family members are Celtic fans, so I am just delighted more than anything to see both Rangers and Celtic playing well with brilliant scalps in Europe. It would be fantastic for both to make the knock out stages.

Of course a discussion about these two and their magnificent results in Europe would end up discussing sectarianism.

Glasgow resident these days.
A lot of their rivalry is hyped up media invention. If they lost the league, most Celtic/Rangers fans wouldn't mind seeing the other team win it.
Unless you live in a part of Glasgow I haven't come across, I can tell you that is most outrageous comment on the Caf. I now live in Glasgow and don't know one supporter of either team that would say this.

It’s been a decent Europa league for Rangers for sure but Celtic should be in the CL end of. Top of their Europa League group isn’t anywhere near their greatest moment.

Celtic still benefits from the great work Rodgers did there. Lennon also is very good at maintaining the good level and has his part in their good European run. Gerrard, as much I can't stand the guy, is doing tremendous job at Rangers and resurrected them. It's good for Scottish football that both of their big clubs are doing fine.

Why should they be? They were beaten in the qualifiers. What gives them a divine right to be in the CL?

to be honest I’m quite surprised that a few people have fallen for that comment. It’s a pretty good wum from @Needham

The most impressive part of both sides European campaign so far is that neither have been outclassed, or even outplayed in any game.

Last season, Rangers were absolutely battered away to Villareal, despite somehow drawing 2-2. They were fortunate in a lot of their European games, especially away. They weren’t impressive in the qualifiers either against poor teams.
This season they’ve been much better, they were excellent away to Porto, could have got a win easily. Celtic gave Rennes a good game away in France as well as being impressive in both games v Lazio.

Hopefully between the two of them they can get enough coefficient points to get the second CL spot back soon. That would be huge for Scottish football, hopefully would eventually result in 3rd place getting the Europe groups automatically as well.

Anybody but old firm for me. They are a blight on NI society. I've seen numerous big riots in Belfast because of these games. The biggest one was when lovenkrands scored the winner in the SFA Cup final. The trouble was intense in ardoyne.

Agreed, a good number of years ago I had to stop the car to break up a group of what I suspect were young teenagers kicking a kid who had a Celtic shirt. Thankfully another guy stopped too, they ran off after giving a bit of mouth, the other kid was a right mess.

Beating us (Porto) currently is no quality benchmark. We are playing the worst football in several years and the manager clearly lost the dressing room. Changing to a 3 at the back system for the first time against Rangers didn't help either nor leaving the best players on the bench.

With that said, Rangers impressed me on how they are actually trying to play good and positive football. Morellos is a good player too.

Stuff like this makes me glad that I grew up in North East England. I was born and lived in Scotland until I was 9, then moved back to Glasgow 5 years ago. The rivalry goes far too far at times for me, so while I enjoy the games and some of the banter there are other parts that are miles out of order. It seems to be getting worse too.

I hardly think Rangers and Celtic are to blame for sectarian violence in Belfast.

What gives the 2nd,3rd and 4th placed team in England a devine right to the champions league, Celtic should have a devine right to be there as champions .

Good to see. Both teams with managers doing a good job. Lennon has always had a decent record in Europe, he's added a more gritty, resilience to the great ground work Rodgers left him, but his team is still playing attractive football. Its good for the game that both teams are set up so well. Celtic had 8k supporters last night, that's incredible.

They got eliminated by Cluj, who have been easily knocked out by Slavia Prague, who are last in their group. I think it's quite fair tbh and I like Celtic.

Anyway, who of these two is more liked between United fans and in Manchester overall?

After a beaker of the south, I sometimes weep for his sins.
As for your nonsense about Wimbledon, the 'real' old Wimbledon FC now ply their trade in Milton Keynes. You are merely a fake Womble dummy-spitting prince of bel twat.
And as for your nonsense about Chelsea, why if i were a Scotsman reading this site, I'd think you most offensive.
As an American, I’m amused by this insult.

I was at a few of the testimonial games against Celtic and they felt like champions league nights.

Rangers fans destroyed parts of Manchester when they were in the UEFA cup final so I doubt they are loved in the city!

The people that support them where though. If those clubs ceased to exist, these riots would not have occurred.

2 Clubs with an identity crises. One thinks their from Ulster and the other thinks they are Irish, when they should just be proud scotsmen/woman.

Based on the latest financial results it looks like Rangers are in serious financial trouble. Celtic survive by selling players and greater income streams.

Seems to me it's the bigots living in the stone age in that country that are the blight on society rather than the football clubs they support in a different country.

You don't think they would've just rioted about something else?

Is this true? I mean I’m sure it is among the Irish population here but I’m not sure anyone else really cares a jot about Scottish football in Manchester. Fergie was Rangers also if you’re looking for links. An affection for either side isn’t something I don’t recall encountering.

I always find Man Utd fans who criticise other clubs for hooliganism just a touch hypocritical. I've seen, with my own eyes, your support (or MIB to be accurate) randomly attack people and trash shops up and down the Paisley Road West. This was before the Champions League game with Rangers in 2003. I doubt this is the first and only time your fan base has been involved in trouble. Do I think every Man Utd fan is a hooligan? Nah, I'm not that daft.

Just popped in to say you can have them both. Can’t stand going to a Celtic game and listening to 90 mins of songs none of which have anything to do with footballs, certainly don’t take my kids.. Rangers nearly as bad. Media scared to call them out for it so go for the smaller clubs instead. both clubs are poison!

Can’t stand either side, living in Scotland unless you support either of the two you hate them. Completely toxic fanbases.

On the pitch Rodgers brought Celtic to a new level, and Rangers improvement has brought improvement to Celtic too. Great results for both sides, never watched the Rangers game, but 80m rated SMS did nothing against Celtic.
