You can can't on 2 hands the amount of decent games Herrera had in his 5 years at Man Utd. Herrera moving clubs to be a squad player at PSG is the same level of greed as when Oscar did a runner to China for the money, despite being tipped for a huge career.

Scott McTominay is on £60,000 a week and is twice the player Herrera is already. Herrera was in the right place at the right time and got very very lucky that he put in his best ever performance away to PSG while a crowd full of billionaires were watching. PSG are realizing that they are paying an £80,000 midfielder £300,000 a week.
You must be from Norfolk, because you’ll need a helluva lot of fingers. There is so much overwhelming evidence to support the importance of Herrera at the club.

Wrong on almost every basis.

He was in fact one of the only good things in the club post Fergie. Excellent mentality and intensity on the pitch, a pure footballer and always gives his all. Improved our midfield every time he stepped on the pitch.

The likes of Lingard are what's everything wrong about United.
nah he wasn’t very good. Better than Lingard sure but that’s hardly difficult. Herrera tried hard and played with passion sure, but he was technically very limited.

Is that why he won our Poty? Pretty much the only outfield player alongside Shaw we had post SAF to won our Poty in a season, as the rest were all won by David?

To be fair the ability of Herrera to play well despite not being in the squad is GOAT level.

winning a POTY in the post SAF years doesn’t mean much. He was barely a guaranteed starter for us.

Yes, as some have pointed out, nothing new here. But points to a key truth. This club needs rid of the Glazers and their pet pig.

The season he was a permanent starter he was our best player in that season.

And whatever he was starter or not, everytime he played he improved our midfield and made everyone call for him to start.

I'll never understand why people under rate Herrera. He was expected to cover Pogba, assist in screening the defence and move the ball forwards. He did that very well every season.

Nobody asked him to create goals, take players on, shoot regularly, that was never his role.

Because he dared not renewing his contract

You mean PSG who actually win trophies, have top players, and compete in the latter stages of the Champions League?
You mean PSG who we literally knocked out of the champions league last season?

While man of the people Ander Herrera was missing with his made up injury as well I recall.

He faked the injury against Liverpool?

fairly certain that his absence at the end of the season was contract/transfer related - wasn’t that the accepted wisdom at the time?
Think if he was fit he would have played as we still had a chance of CL. The only other thing would have been Ole seeing how they coped without him. They didn't.

I won't label the type of wisdom that it was but accepted wouldn't be the word that I choose.

It's not just the money. Our whole culture from the top down is corporate and impersonal. Not family/team like. Didnt we enact his 1 year extension by post?

It's amazing how some of the most ludicrous made up rumours become reported as fact.

Exactly. There's no other reason. Our fans simply can't withstand the idea of us getting rejected.
Considering the other offer (there could have been other clubs interested but PSG was only the main club talked about), I don't blame him. More money, huge chance of silverware however easy, another season in the CL and a decent chance of winning it.

Manchester United was always a family orientated club. It is now just full of corporate suits.
That's a bit simplistic in my opinion. Manchester since the 70s has been a very commercial club with a big focus on buidling and maintaining a brand that saw us become one of the richest clubs in the world alongside Real Madrid who are pretty much the same. The beauty of United has always been that it was what the manager made it, the family like approach was one that mainly stemmed from Sir Matt Busby and SAF without them we have only been a rich club with great marketing. I'm sure that many will be outraged by that opinion but to me that's our reality.

He was one of our best and most consistent players over the years overall. He played well under every manager.

PSG are more success driven than United, especially the CL. They may not have come close to win it in the last few years, but they are doing their best to win it. What Herrera means isnt the commercial side per se, every top club is 'commercialised'. He probably means that the decisions behind the scenes are more professional (respectively better structure), the training more competitive and the coaches may be expecting more of their players and pushing them harder in training.

He gets more money there, but he also plays under a better coach/management, better players and higher chance of winning the big trophies (league and CL). He was always football mad, so i can see the disappointment in United hiring average/past it managers and Ed being clueless in the football side, while being the man pulling the football side of strings. Should be to no surprise that we are badly run, the decisions we sometimes make are not of a club having football, or a better term here would be success, as a top priority

Said it before, will say it again - we need the very best of the best physios, coaches, fitness experts, sports scientists etc. The cherry on the cake should be a top class manager overseen by a competent CEO. And all these people should be held accountable for their performances. We seem to have none of it.

I’m not criticising him, merely pointing out that he’s probably not the most qualified to talk about a winning mentality and focusing on football first and foremost.

End of the day, he was credited as being a senior player with influence and sway amongst the squad, so perhaps he could have done a bit more about trying to shift the culture.

Truth be told, he was a symbol of everything that has been wrong with United – talks a good game, overrated, failed to deliver consistently.

He can talk all he wants about PSG being a more professional outfit but it amounts to bugger all – they’ve achieved nothing since being financially doped. Winning a few French domestic pots doesn’t push the dial for me.

Herrera is a nothing footnote in the club’s history whose reputation is vastly overstated.
Bold is way out of line and factually wrong as well. He is in fact a symbol of what's wrong with United, but that's a reflection not on him but those running the club. His transfer to United was protracted with stories of imposters and middlemen, giving us some of the first signs that our transfer dealings were inefficient and misdirected for a club our size. His contract negotiations at the end as well exemplifying the same.

His professionalism is on par with the squad members Sir Alex could always rely on. Despite being benched frequently by Mourinho for instance, Ander would not only keep from complaining, he would come on and showcase grit and captaincy whenever given the chance. Much like Ji Sung being a specialist man marker in some games, playing well but then benched. If anything the spirit lifting winning run we went on as soon as Ole came, in which Ander was a mainstay, highlights the Clubs poor decision to not hire a manager that better fit our ethos when signing Jose. Ander was better suited to a United team than a Jose team and yet he was a squad player in the latter because of the senior hiring decisions with no vision.

As a United fan, it's also hard to understand where the negative memories of Ander come from. I think about his assist to Martial in injury time in the FA Cup semi, then the way he forced Mhikitaryan back into the box to score in the Europa Final and of course, for the shackles be so often put on Hazard. Heck that wonderful debut double for Rashford against Arsenal is a memory I'll also always remember along with our third goal of the day, scored by Herrera.

The one that talks a big game but fails to deliver is named Ed Woodward.

This backlash against Ander is really petty in my opinion. If you're critical of him then you damn well better be talking about Patrice Evra who just recently compared to training at United like a holiday compared to the work put in at Juventus.

I’m struggling to even believe some of the replies I’m reading in this thread.
Ignoring how good a footballer people think he was or wasn’t, his comments are what we need to spur on change at united.
People from within the club pointing out the problems could be a huge help to us actually getting out of this footballing rut we find ourselves in, and yet this thread is full of posters trying to change the subject to Herreras current club.
Its all a bit suspect to me really.

Agree with you. This club is not run to win titles. Just to win the most valuable club award.

Well said, LVG treated him poor aswell but he still got on with it. I think the club assumed they could lowball him on a contract and he would gladly accept

Not surprise really it comes from the top down , Van Gaal said that of all the clubs he was ever in negotiations to manage we were the only club not to ask about style of play or speak of Football philosophy at all. It is all money and corporate identity with us , we are club with no real Football soul right now.

The bloke wasn’t fit to lace the boots of the likes of Fletcher, let alone proper United midfield legends.

Massively average player.

Who brought Fletcher or any other United legend into this ?:lol:

We're replaying on this "represented everything wrong about United" nonsense.

You simply have nothing to say I guess.
