It's not an easy task, not for everyone.

Yeah true, and I'm not saying it's wrong to think that games are art but sometimes it feels like people put some games on a pedestal and somehow then a boring game is called art, if I have 10 hours a week to spend on gaming why would I use those on something boring?
Agreed, it's why I usually just ignore games for the first six months of release. It's a pretty annoying medium to discuss/read about considering how people get caught up in the hype. It means you don't tend to get a reasonably balanced view of a game until a while after release.

Plenty of reviewers seemed to have managed just fine.
You're mistaking the problem here. Other reviewers write for online publications, not print, which usually requires a week or two for finalising things ahead of publication.

Shorter? Some of the PS4 exclusives I've played have sucked up my whole life man!
It's a fact, you can't blame me for knowing it! Sony started the dumbing/sales at all costs trend in the console scene, in fact in the early days they insisted on it.

Ironic then that nowadays they buck that trend with their exclusives. Seems they came around to what they were told was sense in the face of MS threatening their share of the market. And it worked. Go figure ;)

 "Today's average gamer"

Try "The average console gamer since Sony pushed easier and shorter games" and we'll be closer to the truth.

;)
You do actually touch on a point here. There's nothing wrong with casual gamers but this game doesn't appear to be aimed at that particular audience.

I saw somebody liken it to a PS2 game in one review and it does seem more for people willing to invest time and energy into something unconventional.

Funny thing about the PS2, was in the face of competition from Xbox who adopted their original position of "sales and easy games!" And the Gamecube which had the position of games for gamers, Sony were stuck with the incredibly weird set up of the PS2 hardware coupled with their ridiculous demands on dev teams to suit what they saw as simplistic console gamers.

So they relaxed the rules and worked harder with smaller teams and ideas to even release games that worked properly on that hardware, which is where we get the start of the teams they have today. It would have worked more on the PS3 too, if they didn't go back to trying to compete with the money throwing idiots at MS with a machine built for better things.

The PS4 was always them matching MS with the tech (well obviously initially exceeding them, but with similar architecture) but with the gaming teams they built way back on the PS2 to rectify the mistakes they were making back then.

So all in all, Sony both created the idea of casual gaming and dumbed console games, but also are the frontrunners in going against the grain.

/weaste rant.

Interesting.

I find Sony an incredibly odd company these days to the point where I have to remind myself they're not actually American.

Why is shorter a negative? (That's what he said...)

I'm fecking 30, my days of sinking 150+ hours into a game are basically dead. Witcher 3 was probably the last.

I read the Outer Worlds was 25 hours for a completionist playthrough and almost squealed with delight.

This video has me convinced I'll probably enjoy this game.
If what he says is true that the world allows you true freedom whereby you can complete the missions how you want with a variety of approaches then this will be great for replay value. As for the multiplayer aspect, I'm curious how this will work in practice, I imagine Kojima wants people to collaborate but in reality it can be unpredictable.

Aside from vague trailers over the last year, i've seen nothing of this game but as with you, this video has convinced me it will be the best game ever.
Yeah, all the main gaming outlets I use to judge games (Skill Up, Game Spot, Easy Allies) have given very positive reviews so I'm past wondering if this will be good. Danny O'Dwyer gave a good review as well who's opinion i respect.

Playstation Access is a Sony issued Youtube channel. On top of that, Rob is a massive Kojima fan, his love for Metal Gear Solid is almost legendary. That's not to say these guys are untrustworthy, it's a very entertaining channel but they are generally very positive about everything, especially Sony stuff (obviously). Just something to keep in mind.

I'm trying to steer clear of watching too much stuff about this before I play it but this one caught my eye.

I'll likely watch it because I'm intrigued about the story. Not sure about the gameplay side of things

Been watching Loeya play it most of the day and you know what, although it looks fecking boring as hell there's an undeniable style about it (as expected) and the story and world seem both crazy and interesting enough to get away with it.

I can honestly see why it's so polarising. I've gone full circle back to being intrigued. I just don't think I'll have the time and patience to get the best out of it.

Going to try it. Not looking forward to the parts Jason Schrier was describing though. Seems early part of the game is boring as feck.

I suppose it relies on you being intrigued by its sheer madness at the start and hopes you'll be too busy trying to figure out what's going on to care about the slow start. Ballsy but personally it's what I've always loved about Kojima. The man is a genius but also as mad as a bag full of cats.

Played the first couple of hours. Can confirm it's mad. Lot of cutscenes/story and while I haven't actually done anything other than walk or balance my character so far, I haven't felt bored. There's an intensity to what's going on around to keep me invested. That may change if it got repetitive I suppose but I'm enjoying it so far. The story is pretty mental. Lot to take in.

I just finished the first BT encounter after the trip to the incinerator, feck that was intense!

Im enjoying it so far, I like slow burn games though. Sometimes I even slow down the pace of other games myself like walking through areas at actual walking pace when the game allows it & mood dictates it, I did this alot with The Last of Us, took me something like 18-20 hrs on my first go.

Im glad people like Kojima exist and have the balls to try something this unconventional, even if it won't please everyone. As was said above theres an intensity a ballsy madness to it and an uncompromising vision in gameplay that's very intriguing. There's weight, balance and momentum in the way Sam moves that's that one step more advanced than that in Red Dead 2, it feels awkward at first but I'm getting the hang of it.

If you enjoyed the pace of Red Dead Redemption 2, liked No Man's Sky or don't get annoyed when games force you to move at walking pace you might really like this. I'm very early in though I've only been playing just over 2 hours.

Check out the video I posted a bit earlier on this page, Gamespot (who loved the game) highly recommend getting past chapter 2 as quickly as possible then coming back to finish the missions once you get some upgrades in chapter 3. They say it'll save you a shit load of frustration.

And I'm all out of bubblegum.
I've got to admit that I've never been a very big fan of Kojima, and this seems like UltraKojima. I don't really give him any points for being experimental either. Even if you make a boring game on purpose, you've still just made a boring game.

This game is pure unadulterated boredom. Honestly it's the worst things about open world gameplay but exacerbated and coupled with Hideo's up-his-own-assery, making for such a miserable experience. Anyone who plays this and has positive net enjoyment probably needs some form of psychological evaluation.

Your boots have degraded. You're out of stamina, drink more monster energy. Your baby-ghost-detector is worried, rock it to sleep. You haven't spent enough time doing nothing in your room, so your stamina is low. Oh no, rough terrain, quick time event to not fall over.

Absolutely pathetic.

What's the lore explanation for how Monster fecking energy survived the fall of America or whatever the feck happened the world?

Kojima peaked with MGS3, still my favourite game. But since then it's been a long, slow descent into mediocrity.

I watched some videos and my impression is that it's not actually a video game: it's a somewhat bizarre film that is occasionally interrupted by hours of hauling packages around. It's the life of a delivery man who has no hobbies but going to the cinema in between shifts.

Not sure why Kojima doesn't just say "feck it", and make films instead. He clearly wants to.

Lot of people who haven't played it on here saying it's shit. Well that's convinced me.

Nanomachines!

I started playing the second it unlocked and i'm about 8 hours invested, so thought I would share my thoughts on my experience so far.

I am just about to finish Chapter 2 - wish I would have seen that video earlier, @ArmandTamzarian  - and I am really enjoying it. The combination of mystery and atmosphere makes what is, on the face of it, a mundane overall role, actually incredibly enjoyable and intriguing. The 'balancing' thing really isn't a quick-time event. It flows with the controls nicely and once you get a feel for what kind of pace is right for the combination of the weight and profile of your cargo and the terrain you're traversing, it doesn't happen a great deal and simply serves as a warning to be more careful, when it does. If you aren't careful, it will punish you, though and this really serves to make you care about your cargo.

The soundtrack is unbelievably good (ummm, Kojima, duh) and compliments the game and the environment perfectly. Without spoiling anything, there's a part in Chapter 2 where you have just emerged from a somewhat dark and intense encounter in the rain and you trudge over the crest of yet another hill....then, the rain stops, the sun comes out, the landscape opens up in front of you and this tune slowly fades in as you carry on your journey...

No spoiler whatsoever but don't listen if you want the full experience when playing. :)

...and it's so, so good! People rave about the ladder section in MGS 3 and I still get chills when I see and hear the 'Return to Shadow Moses' section in MGS 4. I would even throw in Quiet's final scene in MGS 5. This part in Death Stranding isn't even significant in terms of the narrative but it's a moment that, for me, was right up there alongside those three in terms of atmosphere and 'feels'. That's part of what makes Kojima great. He certainly knows how to get you right in the feels.

That said, I am a huge MGS and Kojima fan and I am also one of those people, like Armand, who often 'walks' through games as much as I can to increase the immersion factor and to take in as much as possible. I'm also that person who will argue that Kill Bill is a great film because, in my eyes, it's artistically and atmospherically fantastic, as opposed to many people only seeing it as an over-exaggerated, cheesy, blood-fest. Death Stranding is in a similar vein. It won't be for everyone. Especially those that just look at it head on as a 'postman simulator'. But it's so much more than that. It's just not what we, as gamers, are used to.
