What is the story here? I thought that he is vice captain? I would be pissed if i am him. 8 years in this club, best player for years and now he lost it because of player who is here 3 months. I am sure that Harry is great character and leader but still....not right thing to do

I love Dave but I’ve never seen him as leadership material. He needs to be more vocal.

Never struck me as the type who would want to be captain. This thread is just fishing for things to get upset about. Jose is that you?

It's quite obvious Ole sees Maguire as his leader on the pitch.

We've gone through plenty of captains in recent times, and now he's settled in and fully embedded - he'll definitely wear the armband whenever Young isn't on the pitch.

De Gea won't be bothered by that at all - it's quite typical that outfield players take leadership roles before keepers do.

Keepers shouldn't be captains. They're not in position to give other players instructions.

Maguire and McTominay are the only two that look like leaders. Thank feck we actually have two now. It wasn't long back there were none.

It’s clear that Ole fancies Maguire as captain but was reluctant to give him the armband straight away. He’ll be captain next season and Ole is just phasing it in by making him captain when Young not on the pitch.

Not a slight on De Gea at all.

You admit Maguire is a leader but it's the wrong thing to do?

Maguire will definitely be captain next season. Unless Young gets a new contract ;).

Some people will do anything to find negatives after a positive result :lol:
What is negative here ffs?! I am just wondering what happened and will that unsettle Dave. I also prefer midfielder or central defender for captain.

No, i am not saying it is wrong. I am asking why that happened? Last thing thst we need now is problems with Dave. Would you be happy if you were him?
I prefer Harry or Pogba( yes, Pogba if he decide to stay) over him but i hope that Dave is not pissed

This. Also communicating with the referee is much more difficult in that position. De Gea could be as vocal as Peter Schmeichel, and I still wouldn't want him as long term captain. Maguire is a much more sensible option.

You said it's not the right thing to do. Re how De Gea takes it, it's not very important. It's great to have an actual leader captaining the side and De Gea's never been that so i dont see any problem with it. Pogba's not captain material either for what it's worth.

Hopefully it's a decision Dave has been involved in. I agree I don't like the idea of Ole literally ripping the armband off De Gea's arm but hopefully that isn't what happened, plus Maguire is probably a better option as a more vocal outfield player.

One thing we noticed at the end was De Gea stormed off down the tunnel at the end. Within 20 seconds of the full-time whistle going, he was gone. He did not acknowledge the fans whatsoever. Meanwhile, everyone else milked the applause of the fans and a couple of the usual suspects made a special effort to walk around the pitch and return the gesture, including Maguire and Williams.

I put De Gea down as being pissed of at conceding again as it certainly feels as if Romero is the one frequently keeping a clean sheet currently. He wasn’t happy about something though.

He doesn’t have the required leadership, he isnt even the leader of the defense.

Giving the armband to Maguire seems strange because of the few time he’s been here, but watching at our other options I think he’s our better choice.

I never liked keepers being Captains. Yes they can see the whole pitch but they're unable to influence the game in any way other than organising the 4 in front of them.

Are you applying for a position at The Sun? :) There could be a large number of reasons for leaving early... Maybe he needed to use the facilities pronto...

Regarding the capitancy, he didn't have it in him. He was (and probably still is) in a shaken mental state. He hasn't been the same player for number of months now and is defenitely not the leader we need on the pitch.

I don’t think there’s any doubt that Maguire and McTominay are the two on pitch leaders and by next summer we’ll officially see them as captain and vice captain, I don’t think there’s anything to it with De Gea as I’m sure the games he was captain in was because Ole didn’t want to give the armband to Maguire or McTominay so soon.

Harry Maguire has established himself as a leader, everyone in the club seems to agree on that. De Gea is still vice captain.

It's simply more practical to have a captain on the pitch that can actually command the pitch higher up than the 16m box.

I bet Ole had a box of donuts in the room when he told De Gea that he wouldn't be captain, the man is probably still oblivious to it.

Maybe, but as I said, he just went straight off as you would in a huff. Didn’t seem to acknowledge any of the crowd or anything. We were all there to clap them off, but he just put his head down and went.

Yep. We noticed this as well. All singing his name in the Stretford End and he just stormed off without even as much as a glance which is completely unlike him.

I just assumed he might be pissed off at conceding but it was still out of character.
