hahaha crazy, 20 years after that 1999 UCL final... Well played, Flamengo.

It was generally a shitty game, but the last 15 minutes were great.

Jorge Jesus should manage the portuguese NT after the Euros regardless of how we do.

I hope Klopp recognises our history with this one, lost to Flamengo in 81' in Tokyo and we'll meet again. Expect our best.

River Plate was totally superior to Flamengo but they didn't kill the game. Lucas Pratto did everyting wrong and Gabigol played the worst game in his lafe and got the brace. Pinola, the River Plate CB, made the best game of his life and in the last ball he makes a mistake 2-1.

Gallardo is such an incredible manager, River Plate beat flamengo in every single aspect of the game tactically. It's a shame his team lost but I guess no he'll go to Europe after this, it will be exciting to look at his progress.

Fair fecks to Jesus for not subbing off Gabigol and De Arrascaeta, they were attrocious for most of the game. And then they build both goals for Flamengo.

I guess thats why Im not a manager.

Bruno Henrique built their first goal really. Him and Gerson were their best players.

That was mental! One of the girls in our kitchen is a massive Flamengo fan and it was her dad's birthday back in Brazil today!

She went bananas when they equalised and then we had half the restaurant gathered around a tiny phone screen by the wash up area to see the winner!

Place has just calmed down!

River's plan was to press and foul in order to stop Flamengo playing their usual game. Obviously that wouldn't be possible for 90m. My question was wether Flamengo would still have enough clarity to capitalize during the last 10 and it happened. River got only 2 shots on target against 5 by Fla but it wasn't a well played final.

You're minimizing that too much. River pressed flamengo in an excellent way and that intensity led to obvious casual fouls. They won every single duel. Every split ball was won by a River player. Both goals from Flamengo came by mistakes of River Plate players, in the first goal Pratto gives the ball away with the team coming out, and in the second goal Pinola didn't reject correctly and served the goal to Gabriel. It's not as if Flamengo pushed River against the ropes, River had far more chances than Flamengo all over the game and they didn't kill it.

River was a far superior team and Flamengo played horribly for most of the game honestly.

Don't agree River was "far superior" at all. River goal also came from a daft first touch attempt by the experienced Felipe Luís. First half River was better. Sucessfully isolated Flamengo's attack but the strategy wasn't sustainable for more than 60mins. Gallardo gambled on it but luck wasn't on his side this time.

Overall a draw would be the fair result but there could be only one.

Well, we can agree to desagree. To me Flamengo has been unrecognizable all over the game, and that was due to River's game. River had far more chances to me, specially those that didn't end in shots to target cause they didn't connect the last ball and made bad choices. Flamengo has been umconfortable for the entire game, and until the last 10 minutes, a 2-0 would have been totally fair. Well, Filipe Luis just recognized that they were lucky and played really bad.

To me, Gallardo gave a tactical lesson to Jorge Jesus all over the game. But I'm happy that these feckers lost.

Also, my team did beat Flamengo in a Sudamericana final in 2017, at the Maracana Stadium itself, so I can keep on bullying my friends :D

I think the only tactical lesson was fouling any build out from flamengo, if you see the stats basically Flamengo was better in all aspects (stats) but I didn’t watch the game...

you can't take conclussions from stats honestly. Most fouls were caused by River plate's strikers trying to press, typical silly fouls.

Diego made a difference coming on after 65 mins and Flamengo had more of the ball but did nothing with it in attacking areas until the last couple of minutes. Create chances for Gabi and he'll score goals and thats what happened eventually

Brazilian season ends in ten days. River are in the middle of their season that is similar to europe.
The only reason we had a game is because Flamengo was not in good shape in the last weeks. The difference between the clubs is colossal and will get worse in the next year, because Flamengo are going to buy a lot of players.

It's nice and depressing at the same time that the fossil of Diego Ribas is the difference maker in South American football these days.

I mean its expected since the best talent goes to Europe, the average talent goes to USA/UAE/etc, so we are left with youngsters, some veterans and thats it

Was that ex Roma player Gerson in midfield who made that great run in the first half?

I'd suggest the south american leagues are more Championship quality, with some players who could also make it in the premier league - like the better Championship teams
Argentine and Brazilian leagues tie with Portuguese. The Championship never has any great stars in it; but Portuguese, Brazilian or Argentine leagues do.

The Championship really gets overrated. I’m sure teams like Millwall and QPR would beat both these teams right

1st of all I think what Jesus did at Flamengo in less than 6 months is very good: he turned a defensive vertical-counter team into a proper attacking football without pre-season, and kudos to him.
He picked Flamengo on a downward spiral: after a good start they were 8 points behind Palmeiras, they were loosing easy points and things looked like very difficult.

The first games were not good: the team was used to a more deep defensive state, they weren't used to active pressing, zonal marking, etc. He almost got fired on those starting games after the cup elimination.

Ater seeing the match: River made a good strategy to break Flamengo possession, but the ref was very lenient on repetitive tactical fouling. With a more continental ref their strategy wouldn't last that long because cards would had been shown earlier in the match.

But that was the main plan for River to stop the ball to get between lines, because Jorge Jesus teams are very strong in taking advantage of this space, and player like Arrascaeta and Gabigol thrive between the lines, making it harder for a very positional team like River not to be exposed to errors when the ball reaches those areas.

To think Gabigol is only 23. Has a great future ahead of him.

He was sh*t at Inter not only because of arriving at a very young age in a different continent but also for his erratic slowness inside the box, so he probably needs a dedicated, suitable environment to flourish? That said, Inter could well get €40m for him in January from a Spanish club instead of the €20m agreed in principle with Flamengo last year.

It was aone of those 10M€ cash + 10M€ future installments type of deal, and by the look of it it seems Gabigol might want to stay another year.

IIRC, wasn't he on the bench for most of the time?

He was being a waste there, it was a good thing to go on a loan.

I think another half a year and he'll be ready for a new challenge. His goalscoring record for Flamengo is quite good.

Once again...gabigol was physically incapable of playing football in europe. He had the fitness levels of, well, the average caftard

The fundamental aspect I took from this match was its refreshing looseness and that neither team were so bogged down by the importance and expectation that they forget that this is an event.

Wish the two teams involved in last seasons CL final remembered that.
