I mean, he wouldn't start for Liverpool or City, or even Chelsea. If we ever want to be among the best clubs in the world, he should only be a squad option. Workrate and passion is good and all, but is he really United quality? Based on evidence so far, I would say no.
I think he’s better than Henderson, Wijnaldum, Kovacic, Jorginho and Barkley so I’ve no idea why he wouldn’t start for Chelsea or Liverpool ‍♂

I don't think Liverpool fans would agree with you on Wijnaldum and Henderson. Jorginho is cleary better than him. I will agree with you on Kovacic and Barkley though.I love the guy, don't get me wrong. Seems like a decent bloke. Shows passion and heart on the pitch, something we have sorely missed in the past few years, I just think that as of now, he should still be only be a squad option and the board and ole should take blame for not going for any midfielders in the summer.

All said, he is low-maintenance, as this article on the Times illustrates:

It is May 1, 2018, and Manchester United’s player of the year awards ceremony is about to start in the Manchester suite at Old Trafford.
The players are about to take their seats and Dan Walker and Helen Skelton are ready to kick off the show, which is being broadcast on MUTV. There is a problem, however. José Mourinho is not happy. He has learned that his favourite player, Scott McTominay, has not won either of the top two awards — the players’ player of the year and the fans’ player of the year.
“I want to give out my own award later,” the United manager tells a staff member. “And I want to give it to Scott.”
Panic ensues. Hospitality staff scramble around for something that vaguely resembles an award. The best they can come up with is a black table decoration. Mourinho looks aghast when he sees the unengraved vase-shaped award. He does not like it, but it serves a purpose. “Scott has given everything, in five or six months,” Mourinho says on stage.
The new Tottenham Hotspur head coach got a few things wrong during his time at United, but he was right about McTominay. Eighteen months on, the Scotland midfielder is a key part of the first team. His absence will be felt greatly on Sunday when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team take on Sheffield United. McTominay is out for two weeks with an ankle injury that he sustained in the win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
“Scotty has performed really well this season, he’s nailed a position down for himself and his improvement has been great to see so we’re going to miss him,” Solskjaer said.
Paul Pogba has suffered a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury, so Nemanja Matic is set to start alongside Fred in midfield at Bramall Lane.
Losing McTominay for up to four games (Sheffield United, Astana in the Europa League, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur — a reunion with Mourinho) is a big blow. The 22-year-old has been United’s most consistent and influential player. He has run 130.9km so far this season, more than any of his team-mates. Perhaps he gets inspiration from his father who still takes part in parkruns despite being in his 60s.
Other than Harry Maguire, McTominay has had the most touches (835) of any United player and only Aaron Wan-Bissaka has made more tackles than him. McTominay is not, as some would see it, a 6ft 4in screen whose purpose is to protect the defence. He has been just as influential in attack, scoring three times, and has won the club’s player of the month award in three of the past four months.
To speak of McTominay’s importance to United purely in statistical terms would be doing him a disservice. His influence is arguably even greater off the field. Ask those who work with McTominay what he is like and two phrases usually crop up: “Grounded” and “model professional”.
Mourinho put plenty of faith in McTominay during his time at Old Trafford McTominay only has two sponsorship deals, with Adidas and Pro Evolution Soccer. Ever since he broke into the United team in 2017, McTominay, who joined the club aged five, could have earned a small fortune in other endorsements but he has turned them down because he wants to use his spare time for recovery.
Solskjaer admires McTominay because of his settled life off the pitch. You will not find the midfielder out in nightclubs in Manchester. Until recently he used to park next to the academy building rather than in the first-team car park.
On matchdays, McTominay is usually the first to leave Old Trafford and he is almost always still dressed in his kit. He wants to get home to his family and spend the evening with them.
McTominay is regarded within the club as a future captain. Despite his tender years, he is already a leader within the squad. Last season on the way to France to play Paris Saint-Germain, staff pointed out to McTominay that it was Brandon Williams’s first European trip. They hoped that McTominay would have a word with Williams to calm his nerves. They had no need to worry though, as the Scot had already taken the then 18-year-old left back to one side and had a chat with him.
On several occasions, McTominay has spoken up in the dressing room if he thinks his team-mates are not pulling their weight. “He is not afraid to dish out a rollicking,” one United source said.
There are improvements to be made in McTominay’s game. Although he scored a stunning goal against Arsenal in September, he missed a header from close range. He is, however, well ahead of schedule in his progress.
Solskjaer’s staff accept that he is probably four years away from his peak and it is remarkable that he even made it to the first team as he spent much of his time in the academy unable play due to growing pains. He grew 14 inches in two years, meaning that from 2013-15 he played less than two hours of competitive football for the under-18s. Warren Joyce, Nicky Butt and Paul McGuinness, who coached McTominay in the academy, never lost faith in him, although he had to play as an auxiliary striker or No 10 at times due to Marcus Rashford and James Wilson’s ascent to the first team.
Thanks to Mourinho’s backing, and that of Solskjaer, McTominay has gone from strength to strength and that is why United will miss him dearly in the next fortnight.

Jesus, this thread, he is getting overrated on here, can we stop romanticizing our youth player? He doesn't have the quality to be the first team player we need especially if we want to be the best team that challenge for the title. His passing is shit. I'd start him on the bench and nothing else more.

He is only starting because we have a shit midfield apart from Pogba but if we want to improve our midfield next season, Mctominay should never start for us, same goes for Andreas, Matic and Fred.

Loved that article!

Hopefully he can get back for Villa... at the very least Tottenham. I know Ole said he is doubtful but he also played the sleight of hand by saying Scott is “a quick healer”.

he wouldn’t have played against Astana anyway.

See, it goes from one extreme to another. I do agree some people get a bit silly about him, he’s 22 and a work-in-progress; but he 100% deserves his starting spot and has shown enough quality to suggest he could stay there.

His passing isn’t “shit”. It’s probably the facet that he needs to solidify the most, but there is no question he is being more adventurous with it this season so he’s misplacing a few balls. If his passing range is still so-so in a couple of years then that would be a cause for concern, but for the time being I’m seeing evidence Scott is trying riskier stuff. Should be applauded.

Don't get triggered. For many, grass is just greener on the other side. So many names been thrown around last few years to bring in that have been shown to not have the required quality. This kid keeps going from strength to strength. Popping up with goals, being a leader on the pitch and gives it his all. His passing still needs a little work but, he has shown progress with it and he is also very good with carrying the ball forward. Things that he didn't do much of when he first was getting into the side. Should be no reason why he can't continue that progress and even if he doesn't, he is better than most others in the same position right now.

Doesn't have the fancy big name, so he is just not good enough for some.
Yes, fans don’t rate him as highly as Fabinho, Fernandinho or Kante because of his name

The truth is the club is in a state of mediocrity & the whole ‘McSauce’ tripe is proof of it.

He’s a good talent; he’s still young & could progress but to act as of McTom of today is 1 of 2 in a midfield that will even get you top4 is fanciful.

Lets hope he keeps going from strength to strength because he has a long way to go to but it’s not impossible.

McTominay is really not that good; he is a first-team midfielder of a mid-table team. The guy cannot pass, which is a basic attribute of any midfielder above the mid-table level. He is also completely devoid of technical ability.

I really do not understand the hype around him.

We need him and pogba back As soon as possible. Cause when the going gets tough and the tackles start flying, Scott can be relied on to hold his own composure

He is an absolute key member of the team right now. You don't know what you have until you lose it i guess. Him and Pogba would have made the game look completely different.

Any news on his return date?

I think vs Villa it shouldn't matter but after that it will be ugly without him and Pogba.

We NEED McTominay and Pogba back in the coming weeks especially with all the big games coming up! I just don't have any confidence whatsoever with a midfield that doesn't contain both or either of these 2 in the team!

Scott McTominay could be involved when the West Midlands club comes to Manchester this weekend.

The Scotland international has been missing since picking up a problem during the 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on 10 November.

“We hope Scotty will be back as soon as possible, but he’s also been back home and I’ve not seen him,” said the boss in his pre-match press conference, which was held in Kazakhstan.

“Maybe [he will be fit to face] Spurs but hopefully for Sunday.”

We won't win any game without a midfield. Pereira, Mata, Lingard are abysmal and Fred is barely acceptable as a starter at the moment.

Huge boost if true, the midfield against Sheffield was an eyesore. Plus Fred seems to play better when McTominay is playing which is another bonus.
Yeah, vs Sheffield it was obvious what McTominay offers, we were bullied physically and we lacked ball carrier in midfield. With Pogba also close to return, we should improve a lot.

It's evident now why we conceded 5 goals in the last 2 games.

No steel in midfield, no Mcsauce, no clean sheets.

yeah definitely, think we’ve been down on organisation, ball retention and interceptions. Think somebody that doesn’t rate him would find it difficult arguing we would have conceded at least 1 less over the 2 games with him in the team.

We are a counter attack team. Without a midfielder who can win the ball back in midfield, we will not be effective using our pace in attack and defensively easily conceded shots or chances. Our last 2 games, all the goals we scored were none of them from counter attack and everytime we went to defensive structure, Pereira basically just conceded free kick for the opposition.

On the other hand, McTominay is good on winning the ball back quickly and also good on winning free kick. A counter press system without a player who can win the ball back by pressing without conceded too many fouls is useless.

He's brilliant. Not a surprise we looked so much more assured in midfield as soon as he's back.

Some sloppy moments but no surprise we looked much better with him in the team.

God I hated seeing his name in the starting line up just a few months ago. Now I was relieved to see him start.

Never has a player performed such a U-turn on my opinion in such a short time.

He has become a vital part of this starting line-up, brings so much heart to the team.

He has so many qualities, although could use a bit more quality. Did what he does well, very well tonight, did what he does poorly, poorly. We’re a better team with him in it at the moment, especially if it means Pereira not in the team.
