If he can't handle that, why should we accommodate him (in any way)? He isn't a player who has established himself in any shape or form at the highest level.

The point has been made on here in numerous threads: be against splashing obscene amounts on Haaland (or anyone similar) for any number of reasons - fair enough. Be against it because it might "upset" Martial - not a valid argument, period.
Oh,it certainly isn't.
I reiterate, before I'm accused of being a hater, I like Martial and I think he's had a solid campaign as our lead forward. He was integral to 2 goals over the weekend. So that cant be overlooked.
But,as you say, we're not in a situation where we can afford someone blowing hot and cold mentally.

Who's going to pay him 200k a week elsewhere?
And you have a point because no one will.

At the time keeping Martial was great news but at the same time it sounded like United bent over backwards to get him signed on.

Taylor's take on the DDG contract situation is also of interest. The rumours of DDG wanting 300k a week were supposedly false.
DDG actually wanted more.

It's a Podcast, I listened to it while doing other things.
Me too. Crazy isn't it.;)

I don't get how can anyone set down to watch a 1 hour video. There are more precious things to do in your life during that hour.
Strange thing to say on a football forum when the game is an hour and a half long :houllier:

Guess films aren't for you either

I wonder if he'd thrive in a 3-5-2 somewhere in a role like Jota has for Wolves, with a hardworking partner and the ability to run at CBs from the left, but nobody apart from Conte plays that way at a big club every week.

DT is fair in his assessment of Martial (its far from a hatchet job), saying that he drifts between a 6 and 8 rating but never looks enthusiastic. Recognizes that he has the skills to succeed but questions if he has the drive to push on and consistently give 9/10 performances that the ballon d'or type players do.

Some of the stories mentioned:

Ranieri (who is not known for calling players out) calling out Martial's lack of application while at Monaco
One story about coming on as a sub on 60 mins at Monaco and being subbed off 20 mins later having done nothing
Another about missing a match (away against Norwich 3 years ago) due to a supposed injury but being fine the following Monday for training, resulting in one of the senior players being disgusted and saying Martial 'didn't fancy it'
Actually Ranieri is known for calling players out at least he has been doing it in France. And it was a tactical change, Martial entered the game as a wide forward and Monaco were under pressure at the end of the game so Jardim decided to bring an actual wide player in order to go with a 451 instead of a 433.

But if you want an example of Martial being called out, you have Deschamps, Deschamps is often around Monaco's training center allegedly once pulled him aside when he was training with the youth team and asked him what he was waiting for, that he needed to do everything at 100% if he wanted to maximize his potential.

I want Rashford partnering Haaland or Greenwood up top with Martial playing as a CAM/CF in a 352.

It will allow us to go from a 352 to a 343 and Martials creativity is his most underrated aspect of his game in my opinion especially on the turn around when receiving the ball.

I've tried to look at why he doesn't press the centre backs as a forward - and it may be because of his mentality, but his game is heavily dependent on dropping deep away from the defenders to those spaces where he can make passes to players like Rashford, Haaland & Greenwood who should be playing off the defender more. In my opinion, the reason he doesn't press is because he wants to play deep and receive the ball deep because he has all the ability to make things work from there, the dribbling, the short passes, the through balls, the runs once he makes the pass etc.

Where does Jota play?

As soon as I realised the journalist says “you know” every 5-8 seconds without fail I couldn’t listen anymore.

The player barely getting a full season chance as a centre forward and already has a video of someone questioning his quality & potential what he can become, the beard man is embarrassing.

Wait until end of the season then judge, there is no point to judge him now just because he had terrible game on the weekend but then again we are ignoring the fact that our midfield barely even pass the ball on target to our attackers in that game, can’t expect the attackers to do lot of things.

Ole himself has praised Martial about how good he is as a striker. The player has shown promising sign playing in the role this season, he has time to improve, Ole rebuilding squad plan is also improving players. Ole himself is also a former striker at United, can’t suit a better man than our previous managers who can improve him.
Ole also praised Lingard, Jones, Pereira and Shaw... And they are all poor....

If Martial were to leave today, it wouldn’t be about how he was , it would be about what could have been.
Having said that, I’m a huge Martial fan. His presence in our team currently makes us significantly better and unlike many others who’ve posted here, I believe that he has the potential to score 25+ in a season. Even last year there was a good period under Mourinho where he scored in 6-7 games consecutively.

However, that does not mean that we shouldn’t go for another striker such as Haaland. One thing that Martial himself is wouldn’t be able to disagree with would be that his availability / form on the pitch remains patchy and as a squad we need another quality forward option. If we want Martial to become what we hope he could be, he will have to do it the cost of proving himself against internal competition as well.

Really?

Did you even read the article where Ole praised him "specifically"? I meant, you compared it to those names you mentioned, it's not even comparable. It's like comparing 1000 words with 10 words.

That's nearly 20 appearances less, almost a seasons worth of opportunity considering he has hardly played centrally too. Not too bad.
To be fair Martial has played largely on the left and I’d also like to know how many of those appearances were full games he’s made a lot of sub appearances etc.
Callum Wilson has played nearly 20 games less than him. Martial is not and never has been a prolific CF. its debateable as to whether he will score more CF or LWF

Those guys who don't rate Martial, What was our goal scoring like when he was injured and what has it been like since he came back?

And this why I think he is more of a creator of chances & needs to be dropped a little bit deeper.

He makes attacks fluid more than anyone in our team.

Whether we eventually get Haaland or Greenwood starts as a striker up top - playing martial behind these lot instead of players like Lingard & Pereira is only going to make their game easier.

It says something that in FPL he's 7.8m, as a midfielder no less, playing up front for Manchester United, and is owned by less than 10% of teams. You might wonder why does that matter, but it's just a proxy for opinion on him. He's a decent player for a side in the top half of the PL, but little more.

Happy to have him in the squad, but don't see us winning the league depending on him with his current level of output. He could improve further, but these should be his peak years now.

He has actually played 235 less minutes, all of them as a striker.

That Sheffield striker was a thorn all day long to our expensive defence. He battled, work hard, and stretching out the play. I wish we have a striker who would do that.

Rashford provided those, but lacking in killer striker instinct. Otherwise, he’d be perfect.

Doesn't rise to the challenge when needed. Sheffield United just had to be aggressive and energetic and he just downed tools. Absolute luxury player if you ask me.

The DDG stuff was more alarming than any of the Martial stuff. The absolute greed is astonishing.
As long as he gave a heartfelt interview, it shows he cares about United.

Downed tools?

It's him holding the ball up, turning and passing to James before the cross for 2-1.
He plays the 1-2 with Dan James before 3-2.

At this point, im just going to bookmark this thread and revisit it in May. There is no swaying people.

Any summary? 50 minutes is a long listen.
It's a very opinionated interview, touches on topics such as "Martial may not be good enough, Haaland may be what we're looking for." United transfer policy is a bit worrying, Rojo was going to trail for bottling someone before signing for United and nobody from the club had any idea so now United have tightened their background checks. Then a lot of opinions on the desire of certain players. Some small praise for Brandon Williams and questions if Greenwood is good enough.

Then a lot of talk about how shit we play and how much we give the ball away.

Oh and apparantly we are paying De Gea over 450K a week.

Absolutely. Completely couldn't be arsed. Doesn't matter if he did some half-decent things, he should be doing way more. He's an obviously quality footballer. Sick of people defending the likes of Pogba and Martial who just don't try hard enough, simple.

Its why i dont argue anymore in regards to martial. He has performed above expectations individually and to the benefit of the team this season. yet you have ridiculous posts comparing callum wilson who exclusively plays as a striker to martial who played on the left for most of his time here. Nobody ever wants to apply context when making a point but would rather state misleading facts in order to push their agenda.

Martial had an off game on sunday and for this we have long think pieces and comments stating he might have a low IQ . You just have to let it go at some point.

Personally the only problem I have with martial is his drive when things arent going for him.Sometimes I want him to be more agressive and rigid like mane for example. Still he is our best attacker and top 3 players behind DDG and Pogba. Without him in the lineup we are finishing in the bottom half.

Interesting bit by DT re our recruitment process. During Fergie days, he used to phone the other team manager and transfer would be sorted out shortly - in one instance within 3 days.
Nowadays due to the present set up, it could take up to 8 months.....

Yeah, that's not true at all and Fergie wasn't the one sorting transfers out, these things were done by the CEOs and CFOs, surely you remember the issues that SAF had with the hierarchy regarding the wage structure and Kenyon's shenanigans?

I know he’s been player of the year 7 billion times in a row and that gives him leeway, but he seriously gets away with an awful lot. The latter half of last season was one of the most shameful set of performances I’ve seen from one of our players in the last few years - and that’s saying something.

No surprises. Don’t need a 50minute podcast to tell us our best striker is temperamental and performs when he wishes to. It’s the best we got until:
  1. He matures out of it. Not absurd to think considering we’ve slowly seen the frequency of his sulk periods decrease in the past year.
  2. We get a striker that might not be as talented but puts in a shift like James every game. I mean we could also get one in that is as talented and driven as James. However with the situation our club is in right now - and you were a striker that was both talented and driven why the feck would you want to be here? See Dybala.

Do you think it might have anything to him being out for close to 3 months or that doesnt matter? Firmino had 12 goals in 31 appearances last season but some might consider him more than enough to win the league, dont you think?

Also Martial is one of the last players we should be looking at when we talk about winning the league. Upgrading him wouldnt change the fact we still have a midfield combination of pereira, mctominay and fred.

Martials premier league stats:

Appearances121Goals37Assists20

random other average rated striker stats: i promise i picked a random striker, not at a top 6 club ( to make a point - so there was some bias there)

Appearances139Goals37Assists18 (Troy Deeney)

and another random one:

Appearances104Goals38Assists11 (Callum Wilson)

would either of them be described as World Class or having world class potential? and yet their output over the last 5 years matches that of our Antony.
Silly post. Martial joined us as a 19 year old. His statistics should be compared to players in the same stage of their career. Moreover, he's also spent much of that time on the wings. And then there's of course playing under a manager who handled him poorly for 2.5 years, and being (like our other players) part of a dysfunctional team.

In his favour I would say that his output per 90 minutes had always been strong despite playing out wide. And he's been highly rated not just due to his goals but his quality on the ball.

For me, Martial has of course had his issues like all developing players do. His intensity and movement in particular need to reach a certain level for him to fulfill his potential. However since his time here is argue that he's been one of our most productive and better players despite his age.

Personally I believe that while the likes of Martial, Rashford, AWB etc all have their flaws, we should focus our attention on the areas of weakness instead. There's no point focusing on the few performing players right now.

Also a situation with Jardim where Martial was subbed on and 20 minutes later subbed off due to a lack of influence in the game.
I get he has a certain style that's not to everyones liking but the talent is clearly there. I personally think that if he can stay fit he'll score 20+ in all comps.

He would have been what? 17, 18 while at Monaco under those managers, bit unfair to bat him with it now.

The thing that I don't get is that he is talking about things from 2013 and 2014, Martial was 17 when Ranieri coached him and he wasn't fully with the first team, Ranieri would regularly talk to the younger players through the press whether if it was to praise them or tell them to get more focused, hungrier. He did it for James and Ocampos as an example, he would do this type of things all the time.
