What the hell is this 20M release clause news? I haven't watched him much but going by the hype surrounding him and not just now, since the time he went to Salzburg, that's ridiculously low amount for a release clause.

How is this only being reported now? Makes me think it is unlikely to be true at all.

If it is indeed true, we should 100% be going for this, no questions asked. He is clearly a talent and can finish, and £20m is peanuts in this day and age, could probably resell him for £40m in the very next window if we wanted.

I also don't really understand the "issue" posters see that we already have 3 front men and that one would have to be dropped. If we want to compete on all fronts we will be playing 50+ games a season, and 4/5 players for 3 positions is ideal for competition in the team and keeping everyone fresh.

Personally I think it would be worth loaning him straight back to RB for the season. January transfers are harder to embed into the team, and our season is gone in any real sense.

Its bizarre, our fanbase seems to be the only one in world football that doesn't want legitimate players competing for starting positions - which is even more bizarre as these posters are often the same ones complaining about how thin our squad is and how 'Ole is hamstrung' by injuries. Even more bizarre given our well-known, constant, season upon season injury record.

Bidding war for signing on fees and wages yes, but if there is a clause for 20m then there wont be a bidding war, unless a stupid club offer 15m.
A bidding war for Raiola's influence on the deal then.

Regardless, I don't think we'd have much real competition in his signature. We are the only 'big' club where he can realistically have a chance of getting a starting spot at his age. He's still young enough to move on from us if we don't improve in the next few years. We have the money to appease his agent. The lad was born in Leeds and spent the early years of his life living in Manchester. He was a big part of Ole's Molde.

If Ole is sacked at the end of the season, Haaland won't be coming. And to be honest, if I was Ole - I'd hold that as leverage to ensure I get a second season in charge.

I also don't really understand the "issue" posters see that we already have 3 front men and that one would have to be dropped. If we want to compete on all fronts we will be playing 50+ games a season, and 4/5 players for 3 positions is ideal for competition in the team and keeping everyone fresh.
I haven't seen a single person who has issue with this transfer. A few people have doubts on his actual ability and would prefer a more 'sure thing', which is understandable - but that was when we expected to be paying £60m+

Or maybe it's because Ole played in front of Scholes / Keane, and was receiving crosses from the likes of Beckham / Giggs et al.

Our current lot are playing in front of the likes of Fred / Lingard / Perreira etc..
But still loitering around the semi-circle whilst the ball bounces around the six yard box. Great point.

A £20m release clause doesn't mean he would be sold for £20m. It does mean they couldn't refuse to accept £20m, true, but if a second club offered £40m and a third £60m and so on they could choose to sell to the highest.

Why would any club offer €40m if they were obligated to accept 20? The player would still be the one with the power to choose where he ends up.

It is breathtaking how unchecked one medium writes off the other. And that across countries. I have at @RedBullSalzburg Asked weeks ago if there is an AK. This was negated. Maybe that's not true, but at least I asked.

It would depend how the clause was worded, it doesn't necessarily mean the player could demand a sale to a particular club, just that the club couldn't insist on him seeing out his contract. The wording could be as you imagine it though, in which case you would be correct of course.

Depends on what the player signed on for. Bet they never thought he’d be racking up these numbers at this early stage.

The season is nowhere near gone. 8 points from 4th with a lot of games left and still in 3 cup competitions.

Since the original source for the release clause reports appears to be Bild I'd take it with a grain of salt. On one hand they are incredibly well connected and a bunch of German clubs appear to be interested (so they would probably know about such clauses), but on the other they also have the worst ethics among the German press when it comes to reporting.

I call BS then (though it's likely higher than 20m)

No way Raiola would let his client sign a contract without a clause. It doesn't benefit him.
Why? The party who loses most from a release clause is the selling club. For Haaland and his agent it means likely more clubs will be bidding (in form of wages signing fees) for him.

RBS seems quite confident they will get marketprice for him if he leaves in January. I have been under the impression that the RC comes into play from June, but I don't know.
If the price is set at EUR 20M, there will be 20 clubs competing for his signature.

If he is signed for 20M, you could sell him the next day for 60 - 80M. That shouldn't be the motivation for signing the most exciting striker talent in the world right now though.

That's what I mean.

I call bs on that linked tweet denying the existence of a release clause.

I agree that there is release clause.

Are you sure? I thought they were obligated to accept any and all offers for that amount. They can't pick an offer that's preferential to them. If Haaland decides he wants to join us then they must accept our 20mil offer, whether they've received a higher one or not.

No, I'm not sure :). Just going off memory from other transfers, but I'm happy to be corrected.

I can't remember why I joined this war.
A well thought out response, thanks for your help.
I think you fundamentally don't understand how a buy out clause works. It's not between two clubs that the buy out fee is paid it's a clause for the player to buy himself out of a contract. Of course the club the player wants to go to will usually pay that money through a third party or transfer the money to the player who will then deposit the money himself at his club. The thing is the player alone decides where he wants to go if he can provide the buy out fee. Hell he could even pay the 20M out of his own pocket and just retire if he so chooses. The fact of the matter is that the club who he is playing for has no say in the decision where the player goes as long as he deposits the money at their account before the deadline for this release clause, if it has any, is up.

So in short if Haaland pays the 20M to Salzburg and Real comes along bidding 60M for the player, which Salzburg accepts, he could still decide to go to the club that gave him the 20M he just gave to Salzburg.

Ah right, thanks. I'm sure you're right but my mind's now going on what the tax implications of all that might be. Still, having already displayed my ignorance I might be better staying out of it!

Is that how it is everywhere, or just Spain? I know that's the process in Spain.

I think the only ones who dont want us to get him are Martial FC people who are afraid he might displace him from the first XI or make him unhappy. Feck that i say, we need more forwards

We cant have both Haaland and Greenwood in the squad. They both need minutes at the stage of their careers, at #9, no place else, and with Martial as first choice we cant have two young talents held back behind him. One is fine, because he will get minutes as Greenwood is now.
We dont need another young #9 prospect though, we have that in Greenwood already. If you buy Haaland you give up on Greenwood or at least send him into loan obscurity. We have a 25 man squad more or less, there is not room for more than one or two young prospects in the same position. Its not possible.
Money need to be invested in midfield. A lot of it. Its where investment should be directed, we should stick with Greenwood as the prospect up front. I dont think Greenwood would be doing worse than Haaland at his current club btw. Haaland is not even a complete regular for Norways national team, which pretty much sucks as it stands now.
I like Haaland, put his profile is so far from what should be our priority: Midfield, midfield and another midfielder.

I think you've made that up.

I've only seen the initial price put people off. 60m is more than a proven/developed striker. Auba and Lacezette didn't cost that much.

Not because he is bad or anything, but because Greenwood is at least as good already and have a bigger potential as well because of his pace and technique.
Haaland might turn into a decent/good/great player, who knows. But he is so not what we need squad-wise right now. People in this thread is acting like he is the done deal already. He is very far from that. Dortmund or even the other RB-team for 2-3 years should be his next step.
We should keep faith with Greenwood.

How on earth is Greenwood at least as good as Haaland??? Dude is already a man! Greenwood is still a kid. Can't hold up a ball yet. Still easily shoved off it. And not really that quick, especially with the ball at his feet. Haaland seems as quick, if not quicker than James! Technique may be comparable but I'd still place Haaland above. I see absolutely no problem having both here. We used to have Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo and Berbatov here. Same when Ole was a player. That's how we got to the top.

Totally agree with you. Football is about being the best team you can possibly be, not avoiding upgrading your players - SAF replaced Andy Cole, a man who Martial isn't fit to lace the boots of, with a better striker when the opportunity arose.

From someone who has seen a lot of Haaland: Quicker than James? Are you fecking kidding me. Haaland has the same kinda pace like Lukaku, fast over longer stretches. Explosive? Not so much. Technique is Lukaku-level.
What will happen when he puts on even more weight and muscle that is inevitable for a 19-year old? I am not so sure.
And there is one year between Haaland and Greenwood. A lot is going to happen with Greenwoods body over the next two years as well.
But regardless which one you fancy (in I woud tend to go with the Manc academy product who is doing really well on a completely different level than Haaland), there is not enough minutes to go around for two teenager #9s in a top PL-squad. Thats just ridicilous to even suggest it.

I think Greenwood is great, but come on. That's just absurd. Haaland has been breaking records all year and all the comparisons with Lukaku are daft. If he fulfills his potential he might be the next Zlatan.

And no, we cant wait 2-3 years. Literally the only reason he would ever consider us over anyone else is because Ole is here (for how long?) and if he really becomes as good as it looks he might be, he will cost 3x more than he does today

Usually the release clause means the player can buy himself out of the contract and thus making him a free agent. RB Salzburg is never going to receive more than 20m but Haaland might if he has multiple clubs to choose from.

Haaland has been "breaking records" in the Austrian league?
He started two of the crappy Norwegian NTs failed effort to reach the ECs (well they, still have that NL playoff stuff or whatever). No goals or assists. If you cant make Norways first team in the state they are in you are not the nxt Zlatan.
He started 3 of RBS 5 games in the CL and did very well there.
He started 10 of 13 games for RBS in the league when he was available.
I dont get where this breaking records comes from? And have you ever actually seen him play for an entire game. He is not even close to being ready to play for United and again: we cant groom him and Greenwood at the same time.

Hes got 8 goals and 1 assits in the CL this year. Thats better than the likes of Kane, Sterling, Son, Benzema, Mbappe, and Salah and that are players in their prime playing for much better clubs.

And of course we can groom him and Greenwod at the same time. We have 4 attacking players covering 3 spots FFS. Right now Greenwood isn't being "groomed" as much as hes being thrown out there because we literally have no one else with Martial injured.

And yes i have seen him play. He terrorized Koulibaly all game when they played Napoli and hes one of the best CB's around now. Hes got pace, acceleration, strikers instinct, height, strength and good finishing abilities. We would be stupid not to go for him

Jesus our fans can be fickle. We get a player or 2 in Jan, esp a striker as in one who actually plays there and can attack balls in the 6 yard box, we could go on a decent run and top 4 is still achievable. The likes of Chelsea have and will continue to slip up. Re loaning him back, not a fan of that, if he comes in now, yes he could take time to settle but he could also give us that lift, freshen up the team. Even if he did take a bit of time, it means he hits the ground running next season. He will take time to adjust no matter when he comes. Of course ideally you'd want a preseason out of him, but if we got that real striker, (Martial as good as he is, isn't a conventional number 9 and is having injury issues,) we could kick on. Whether he comes or not, I certainly wouldn't be writing of top 4 just yet

We actually dont. We have Martial, Rashford, James, Greenwood Mata, Pereira, Lingard and you could add Gomes and Chong as well since they are part of the squad as well. All of who has occupied one of the three attacking positions this year.
Add to this (hopefully) a Sancho in the summer and I still dont see how adding another prospect will add up in minutes played.
We are stacked with young talent upfront already. Money needs to be put in someone who is ready like Sancho and the rest in midfield, midfield and midfield.
