Glasgow resident these days.
You can't fault Ole for the mistakes or lack of awareness from Mata yesterday. He is probably very good in training and perhaps justified his selection, but for someone who is supposedly got such a good football brain, he was so poor with the ball yesterday I hope the man is having a really big reflection on himself today - he must know he is finished at the club.
His selection points to the massive lack of quality at the club and he epitomises the type of players that fill our first 11. We can't and won't be anywhere near the top 4 until the likes of Mata and a handful of others are not starting for us. Of course they will get minutes because we need to rebuild a squad slowly, but he should be starting ever, ever again.

A shadow of himself. Even at Chelsea he never hit his Valencia heights, but made a couple of good seasons. He doesn't even step up at taking corners anymore, and he used to be spectacular doing it.

Stinking player. Extending his contract in the summer was yet another Ole masterstroke. 'Getting United' to Ole means accommodating 'nice guys'.

Shame his legs are completely gone. You can still see that he is an intelligent player.

13 games, 0 goals and 0 assists, and his last 3 seasons' performance are even worse than Lingard. What if he is not a Spanish, or a "Juan Mata", always been told he is a nice guy blah blah blah, he should deserve the same treatment of Lingard from Man Utd fans.

He's as finished as Matic, yet Ole still fields him in PL games in hope of, I've literally no idea. Can we please just hire a manager that's going to get rid of this guy and actually replace him, for a start?

This applies to Mata and Lingard but whytf do they both seem to think their job on the pitch is to play in the box as a hybrid striker? Is that how basic their and the coaching's understanding of 'attacking' midfielder means?

Mata was ahead of or on the toes of Rashford/Martial half of the whole match. I get that Peirera and Fred weren't helping with their passing but it should be Mata's job to get on the ball facing the goal alongside those two. Instead he getting into positions to play prime Lampard ffs.

It was literally Peirera and Fred then a front four of Rashford, Martial, Mata and James. No wonder we were getting dominated. Can't even get people in the right parts of the pitch, just a free for all.

I completely forget he is still at United. He should have been sold long time ago.

With Pogba coming back he'll be even more useless. He'd be behind Pogba and Lingard in that #10 position and I don't want to see him anywhere near that RW position.

Him and Matic are next in line to leave United i feel. I never understood why he was given a contract extension. He is anti United at the minute. Slow, cant press or run behind

He's clearly a lovely bloke and even though I don't think he's been the player we all hoped we were getting when we signed him in 2014 he's still produced some high quality moments.

His big game record is actually fairly decent, he's got goals against City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Juventus and Arsenal plus he scored the late equaliser in the FA Cup final against Palace. There have been some great moments and I've always liked him.

It was clear to everyone though that by the end of last season he was totally spent as a player. He was never fast but his legs have completely gone now and unless we get a free kick on the edge of the area he's no threat at all to the opposition. It was a baffling idea to give him a new contract.

How many times has He played as an AM during his time here?
Probably one of the most wasted talents at ManUnited. He's forced not to play to his strengths most of the time. He's weak & slow and most managers used him as a Right Wing.

Kept here for squad morale I think.

DDG lost Herrera, probably couldn't face losing Mata at the same time too. I think Mata is a popular face in the dressing room so keeping him around was worth while in that sense. Obviously on the pitch we could do better.

It's a different world!

I don't agree with it as I don't think he offers enough anymore, but I can see why they made the decision. I believe he's also contracted to become an ambassador when he retires.

Surely he will be moved on in the summer and won't last the full 3 years of his contract

Very good second half from him. This is the Mata we want to see. Although not sure he knew Young would get the ball for the first goal.
I think he can do well against Everton if we play him.

Much better when he got moved to left side of centre midfield. Got involved a lot more, linked play, running into channels. Was good to watch.

Only saw the 2nd half so can't comment overall but that touch for the goal after Matic's pass was fecking sublime.

Stats in his profile must be updated, he made 2 assists today in addition to a goal. And it says "0 assists"

I know that he should be sold, but I still love the man. Brilliant performance today.

Super 2nd half, two assists and scored the penalty. Thought he struggled in the first half, though he did have one of the few real chances in the half, when his shot got blocked after Young's pass.

I actually think he'd be better in that sort of position now. Similar to Cazorla, he's got a great passing range, intelligence and knows how to protect the ball. His agility and 1 touch football can help him when getting pressed, and you generally get more space and time deeper in midfield to playmake. Up close to giant centre backs is where he struggles more often.

I'm not saying he should be a DM, but more of a link up man in midfield that does the busy play making.

He had a good 20 minute spell last night, I haven't read through but I'm guessing the last season and half will have been forgotten due to a few nice passes against an average side.

Not so sure, the very fast nature of Premiership football may be just too quick for him now, but he certainly creates things, and that pass where Young scored was meant for Martial I think, but Martial didn't read it.

You certainly have something against him. He was one of the few players first half who was trying to create things and move around, most of the team were a bit pedestrian. Second half he was again coming deep for the ball, and always creates openings around the opposition box, which ultimately ended with a (admittedly flattering) 4-0 win. Think he is more suited to the slower, less hectic Europa League than the Premiership, but none of us knows how much he adds to the squad in a training/coaching capacity. Some people never look at the overall picture.

I don't have anything against him, I've said many times he's one of the gentlemen of the game, but I also have seen the last 18 months from him and he's been consistently poor. As far as the overall picture goes, if he's valuable in coaching and training then retire and join Carrick on the staff, as he's well past his best at this point on the actual pitch, and that is the picture that matters when you are actually taking to the field of play.

I still think he has something to offer in Europa League matches, as long as players like Pereira do some of his work off the ball, but I accept your point that as far as Premiership games go, he has not provided what we need, albeit that he has played on the right wing a number of times, which is patently not his correct position. He may well take up a coaching position after his playing career.

Against the poorer Europa League teams in the group, I agree, but when we start playing better teams we can't be playing with a player who essentially needs someone else to do their running for them, it's one of the reasons I think managers are often reluctant to play him as a #10, he's so slow in moving once he gets it that he gets punced on by any half competent team. Obviously he's going to get a smattering of games over the rest of this season but to give him a 2 year deal made no sense IMO.
