Absolutely done at this level, can't even pick a good pass anymore. Needs to be released ASAP yet he's here for 2 more seasons. Christ. Most pointless sub I've ever witnessed

I'd need to see it again but it looked like he had a golden chance to slip Greenwood through into a great position right near the end but he didn't get his head up and then played a shit pass.

Yep. we had an overload on the back post with Martial/Greenwood 2v1 but instead of Mata looking behind him, he tried to force it back to Rashford. Was a great chance, but that sums up our attack.

I do understand the substitution and I understood it when Mourinho used to make it to. The idea of having Mata in and around the box in case the chance for a subtle little pass arises does make sense. The issue is that it so consistently fails to materialise. Would have been better off keeping Fellaini for moments like that.

I like Mata but he is as reliable as a chocolate teapot. I would love him to go to China or MLS ASAP.

Rashford had a great piece of play, getting us into a dangerous position, and, as expected when he passed to Mata, he messed up the pass. His passing is so overrated. He's absolutely terrible.

Completely useless, him and his father couldn't have believed their luck in the summer when United re-signed him.

He should be donating 100% of the wages he's stealing to charity.

That’s a real bug bear of mine. Players don’t steal wages anymore than lazy bastards in offices and building sites up and down the country who don’t pull their weight. It’s just that in football they don’t get sacked for under performing

One of the players that needs to go in the summer. He needs to be replaced with experience however (as we do need it to help the youngsters)

Total passenger. Need to either ship him to China in January or give him away to one of those over 50s walking football Sunday league clubs.

These kind of games should be his bread and butter, everything looked a chore for him tonight.

Terrible again. I'd say he must surely be done for us, but we still have Young around and he's been past it for a few years too.
He wasnt really terrible though was he. Couple of loose passes for the final ball (which everyone was guilty of to be fair) but he never stopped moving /making time, was involved in lots of our intricate one-touch moves, and was heavily involved in the third goal.

So yeah, he was fine. No one was too bad today really.

I thought he was dreadful. Very little impact (apart from the ball for the 3rd goal), no cutting edge, a few loose passes, dispossed a couple of times. He should be the key in unlocking such games and he very rarely seemed like he had it in him.

Agreed. I thought he killed many moves getting the ball stuck between his legs, running into blocks and going for the wall pass when it obviously wasn't on.

Its actually shocking to me how much his level has decreased. The Juan Mata we bought in 2014 would have stomped all over Colchester.

I'm also baffled at why he refuses to take shots. Always looking for a side rule even within the penalty area. One thing we know for sure is that Mata can strike a ball. His hesitancy to do it makes no sense to me.

Sad to see someone who was one of the best in the league looking so average.

I thought he played well yesterday, was part of the reason we could circulate the ball so well, and got the excellent pre-assist for Martial's goal. He's always been the best we have at breaking teams down, and he showed that again yesterday.

You’d imagine the aging of a player of his skills wouldn’t hit him much since he never really depended of the physical attributes but rely more on his creativity, but god damn he has been hit hard he is even slower than he was and not just physically, he stealing a living here. Total waste of wages.

After seeing some players posting Mata's book with some messages from him on it, I believe he will be leaving the club soon.
If that's corrent, wish him the best and I am sure he will be remembered as a great player here.

Other than youths, is he the most pointless sub player ever in United history? I can't think of anyone topping the list.

Bringing him off the bench to try and change the game is the most pointless sub going. 3 year contract looking more ridiculous everytime he plays.

Total waste of space, what a joke that new contract was.

Has this ever worked by the way? Would be interested to know about even just chances created since this has been tried

Moment today when the space is there, it’s on his left everything is perfect for what you would think someone of his reputation could pull off easily and Shaw is through waiting for the ball to be played and Mata turns away from it and plays a safe pass.

If that was Silva or DeBruyne then Shaw is fed through and going in to space to lay a ball across the box. There is just very little confidence in the players to execute the risky but needed pass at the right time.

All the guys you’d want on the ball to try these things coward away from where In the people that couldn’t hit a barn door seem to be open to trying but not being able to execute.

I like Mata he seems like a really nice guy but how many more times do we have to do the same song and dance.

Thought he played really well first half. I’d written him off long ago but he used the ball fantastically in first half,

Good with the ball and didn't weaken our defense that much. Him and Matic combined quite well at times.

I think him against Norwich could work quite well, but should not play against City.

100% pass completion apparently. Didn't create much. Linked the play fairly well. Free-kick was close but what's the point of missing on that side if the only chance of scoring is if the keeper wrongly anticipates that the shot is going the other side ?

That's massively harsh... He made the right call with the direction and was as close as you could get.

No idea why anyone else takes free kicks when he's on the pitch.

100% agree he’s the only reliable free kick taker. He played very well today he found space and used the ball really well

I thought he had a decent game but had to few options to pass to ahead of him which made it difficult. Hard to create opportunities when you have no forwards/strikers.
