I just can't get enough of this guy. I want to tune in and watch him every week. The only times I can recently remember feeling like this is when we had Ronaldo, when we had 18-22 year old rooney, and van nistelrooy.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
That’s the issue. Greenwood should be developed as a striker, not fighting it out for the right.
I seem to recall same thing said about Rashford - "he's a striker! he shouldn't be played on the wings!" 3-4 seasons later, wrecking havoc much much better from LW/LF than CF.

Tbh idk if Greenwood can play as solo CF in top modern football specifically doing all the hold up, post play, CF roles, etc etc. So Right Forward may be the best option. We'll see.

Rashford is lightning fast and doesn’t have the finishing skill Greenwood has.

I think Greenwood will eventually end up playing upfront, but right now I agree he needs to bulk up to play against the premier league defenders, he is too light to get into the physical part of the game yet.

Agree he might be better suited for RW at the moment. He has more playmaking abilities than I expected, with good vision and passing, and I think playing him at CF will limit his influence on the match. Could also be interesting to see him as a second striker/no. 10.

This. 100% agree. His vision, his technique, and finishing inside the box, are already more refined than Rashford's will ever be. No disrespect to Rashy, as I am huge fan (needs to be more consistent and more 'take the game by the scruff of the neck kind of attacker), but this could be a good balance going forward with both of these young fellas.

Not if we buy Haaland. Not at United anyway I don’t think. While Greenwood is ‘playing on the right for a few years’, Haaland will be playing through the middle and developing there. Then what?

What's the point predicting the future? Haaland could be the next Forlan, next Lukaku, the next Ruud or the Noggie R9, nobody can predict what sort of career trajectories they will have. They both look very good players and both have the potential to reach the top. Having 2 top forwards would be a great problem to have.

He has to be starting games now.

It's maybe too early but we need him. He's already 100 times more dangerous and more of a threat than the likes of Lingard Mata or Pereira.

We already have one forward though, so it would be 3 if we signed him, not two. And yes, he may we’ll become brilliant. In order to find out, he has to be played, and developed. Likewise Greenwood could become whatever. He needs to be played to find out.

We play Colchester tomorrow. Who do you think we will start up front? And how do you think it would have worked if Haaland was also here tomorrow?

@Rozay you're absolutely spot on, I've been harping on for a while why I think going for Haland is a poor choice and why I'd opt for an older, more experienced striker if we're really looking at striking options. Greenwood's one of the most gifted players I've ever seen at youth level, he's slowly but surely translating that form to the first team. Even while finding his feet he's picked up 7 goals which is an incredible return and looks well on course to hitting double figures. As you said, Greenwood needs to be given time to develop and he's not going to get that with Haland around, I worry he'd end up being shoehorned in on the wings.

I'm not 100% certain but in his younger days I believe he played as a number 10 (someone might need to fact check me on that).

Didn't RVP play quite a lot out wide? Didn't seem to do his development any harm, and they seem to be quite similar players.

You're missing his point though, while Greenwood's being cast out to the wing it would mean Haland is developing as a ST which means Greenwood won't be getting developed as a ST.

Needs to start over Dan James.

He's left-footed, can come inside, link up, make passes, and score goals which will get the best out of Martial and Rashford. James should be a super-sub for one of the front three after about 60 minutes.

The playing out wide for a bit is not so much the problem. It’s what happens when that ‘for a bit’ finishes. He will then have a 22 year old striker who has also been developing, either as first choice or behind Martial.

I’m not against buying a striker because of Greenwood. I’m against buying one the same age. It makes little sense, for him and for us as a whole. Unless Haaland really is just that good. Chances are though, Haaland will take time to develop himself. During that period, Martial will be first choice, and Haaland, due to his own developmental needs, will play when Martial doesn’t. So what scraps does Mason get? He becomes a winger exclusively.

I’ve said before, but I’d buy Diego Costa now. He’s 31, and is still very good. He can compete with Martial to be first choice NOW, rather than Haaland who is 19 and needs to improve himself. Greenwood can get scraps up front and predominantly develop himself out wide, but there is a clear ‘what happens next’ in this development plan. After a couple years out wide, Costa is 33 and will probably head back to Brazil. Greenwood can easily take that spot in really competing with Martial to be first choice, or if Martial leaves, we can get a new striker then to rotate with Greenwood.

All talks of Greenwood starting over Daniel James would mean we'll be sacrificing James's defensive work-rate and 50/50 battle for Greenwood. Greenwood didn't help AWB defensively last game against Everton, AWB had to do clean tackle 2 times against them inbox, it won't happen often if he gets bits of help.

I'd be okay with Greenwood playing off Martial, not another useless player like Lingard and Andreas fecking up every opportunity. I think we should switch to like 4-2-4/4-4-2/4-4-1-1 formation to accommodate Greenwood, Rashford, James and Martial in the team.

We really should stop playing attackers for their defensive work rate. Maybe one at the very most, but not 2 or 3 at the same time.

Doubly so when they play on the side of AWB, the best defensive fullback in the league.

Greenwood is a forward. We will be ‘sacrificing’ tracking back for a forward who actually puts the ball in the net. It’s an easy choice.

He’ll have to fight for his place, if the kid is as good as we think he’ll get a place, don't fear competition if Haaland’s better then we’ll end up with a better player anyway.

Ultimately this is about getting the best team we can, not about developing players.

I imagine that's because we were chasing a winner, he was brought on to score goals, which he did successfully.

Which is fine, but then don’t buy an undeveloped player, stopping the chance for Mason to develop and compete.

As I said, I’d take Costa in a heartbeat. I’m not anti striker. We don’t need two teen strikers. Unless Haaland is the next R9 of course.

Thats the thing, we are not looking to bring any medium teenage striker, we are talking about bringing potentially the best teen striker since Mbappé and for a cheap price. Its a no brainer if we manage to convince him.

I think bringing Costa would be great as we desperately need a killer striker, but I think it would be worst for Greenwood since the gap of quality at the moment against Martial and Costa is too big, he’ll end up being a clear third option while with Haaland he’ll be competing to be second option.

He will be third option if we got Costa, and also an option on the wing. The main point, due to age, is that it is for a determined period of time. Costa will be gone soon.

It serves him no benefit to ‘compete to be second choice’. How do you compete to be understudy? In a game like tomorrow’s against Colchester, who starts up front of Haaland was here? And who is likely to start up front now that he isn’t?

I'm not sure how that contradicts my point that great strikers can and have been developed on the wing in the past. I take his other point though regarding their similarities in age.

Costa is 31, is out for like 3 or 4 months and has been finished at the top level for awhile now. His last good season was like 3 years ago. There's a reason he's been linked with Brazilian sides. No thanks.

Yes I get your point, but Haaland is not coming to compete against Greewood but against Martial, and as I said if Greenwood’s good enough then he’ll play. All great players at top team had to overcome good strikers, competition only makes you better and that’s what we should aim.

Ultimately if the kid is not good enough, no matter how many minutes we give him he wont make it, it's up to him to earn chances in training and take them on matches.

I believe Greenwood is the best striker of his generation, it excites me to know we could have a Haaland and Greenwood partnership for years to come, I think eventually we’ll end up moving on Martial because this two will surpass him.

But before going full muppet, Haaland isnt even a sure thing.

I agree with that sentiment, sure they can play on the wing, but you'd normally do that if you have a striker in their prime who's only got a few years left at the top and a very talented youngster who's good enough to be starting but maybe not as striker and have some elements of their game to refine. Signing Haland and Greenwood means that one of them isn't going to be getting the required minutes in their preferred position which will inevitably lead to stalled development.

With the number of games in the next 2 months, I feel he will start once a week.

alot of us have been calling for him to start but Ole has done well here, he has gradually brought him in and now when we need him, he is full of confidence.

31 is perfect, and he’s not finished. He’s still played well since rejoining Atletico, and would make sense as a rotation senior striker, more so than Mandzukic, because he’s better.

A lot of young coache play with two strikers now. Both Rose and Nagelsman do at Monchengladbach and Leipzig. Same with Conte at Inter. And you could argue Liverpool do to.

I would not be surprised if Ole went down this route.

And sacrify one of our two ( with Rashford ) most dynamic players? players who can provoque a decent free kick or a red card and try a long shot when all the team seems static and unhelpful and that was the case more than often those last years.
May be he can get MArtial's place in some game, but the way I see it, for now he should be le super-sub and with this kind of rush we can make a Macheda or a Januzaj out of him.

Greenwood's an incredibly dynamic player too though. It's not like James has been so indisputably brilliant that he should be undroppable, competition is healthy and currently Greenwood's putting the ball in the back of the net which is very important and James hasn't scored for months, as much as I like him.

Tell me another top team that avoids buying talent to avoid stagnating their academy players? Greenwood is good enough to thrive under any conditions. It is Martial who is at risk of losing his spot not Greenwood. Martial just isn’t good enough to be a 9.

Halaand won’t affect Greenwood it’d be Martial who’s affected by him.

Greenwoods mostly going to play off the right this season I’d imagine and that’s fine.

I feel sorry for him. Imagine not even being able to properly celebrate your 2 debut goals in the league.
What a player though.
