I’ve been critical of Smalling, but he seems to have stepped up on his loan.
Smalling and Maguire seems a decent partnership in theory

Smalling has been a consistently good player for many years. Despite the absurd narrative which surrounded him at United, his high level of play for Roma is not in any way a surpise.
If it was up to me, I'd never sell him. He's just too good. Totally slated on here. He would've fared better than both Maguire and Lindelöf.

Maybe if We tell Roma "try Jones, will play like Duncan Edwards" He will actually do it and We'll get 150m for both transfers of him and Smalldini.
Hopefully we can get £40m or so for him, if Bailly and Lindelof are worth 30m Smalling is worth close to £50m to be honest - his successful loan should ensure we don't have to accept a lowball offer.

Bring him back, Lindelof simply isn’t a good partner for Maguire.
Id say 30-35 would be a good offer, he is entering his 30s so probably would be his last great contract.
But if reports are true, then we would be accepting around 18...

Smalling is our best defender. Would love to see him come back in beside Maguire. How Ole thought starting Lindelof ahead of Mike was the right call is something that actually worries me about the board.
Bring him back and rotate Lindelof in midfield. I think him and McTominay can play the double pivot with Rashford Pogba and James in front of them and then either Greenwood or Martial. Martial could also slot into any of the front 3 behind the striker.
Too much sense, we will never see this.

Absolutely right. I have always thought him a very solid and reliable defender. His passing is ok but it depends on what you want from a CB.
It seems like United made an offer at 18 million but was not accepted by Roma. I am not sure about Roma, but I know other Italian clubs that have policies against signing more than 1 year contracts with 30+ year old players as they don’t want to end up with expensive players who are injured all the time. At the same time, a long last contract is what most players are looking for when they’re 30+.

So you want play a defender in midfield, in a double pivot we know makes us weak in attack, play our best player in a position we know he doesn't like and play our best centre forward behind another centre forward? All so we can accommodate a defender we know isnt good enough? Hmmm.
If I was Smalling I wouldn´t want to come back, he is doing very well with no hassle and seems to like his new city and club.

Don't forget Fosu-Mensah and also Shaw of all people, why can't we just buy a natural DM without people wanting to shoehorn unnecessary players there.
Is he still tugging shirts at corners and free kicks? This was his speciality at United. VAR would slaughter us with him back in the side. If he learns how to defend properly then he's worth another go.
