Under a tree.
I saw him and a couple of Leeds games last season, and he looked like a good prospect, haven't watched any of Leeds this season though, so not sure if he has progressed. He has the right attributes (reads game well, good energy, good pass range) for our midfield so not against signing him if he has/can improve on them.

Wasn’t knocking your post. Was being sarcastic about other posters who complain that the scouts are rubbish not finding players before they cost too much. Then on the other hand they complain when that we are actually scouting and targeting young players rather than splashing the cash. Can’t win
You have it right though. They only want foreign players scouted, preferably ones they know of themselves. They want German managers and French players.

There are definitely people on here who’d have been delighted to have David Wagner as manager, and signed Jean Seri, Nabil Fekir and Ismaïla Sarr.

But the point is, we shouldn't be spending 40-50 m(assuming he will cost that much) on championship players though?
Then there is no value in scouting, right ?

The minute we show interest in a player, their price goes up. Its a sort of "tax" we pay for being the biggest club in the world.

Sean longstaff would have cost Leicster 25 million, perhaps less. When we were interested, Newcastle slapped a 50 million price tag on him.

I watched alot of the championship football last season and was impressed by him most of the time looks to have a great attitude and is pivotal to Bielsas style. Would be a good signing of Leeds would sell.

I cannot see Leeds selling. Keeping him over there was one of the promises made to Bielsa. Selling him to us in January would sent Bielsa crazy.

You saying he'd choose Spurs over Manchester United.

Really..
Born and bred in Armley with a mutual respect between his club and fans. United when Smith came we’re a much different level of appeal, of course any player from any team would be tempted by it.

Not saying it couldn’t happen, but it just seems different

They said a much bigger price for James too but it ended up a reasonable price, I’m sure that this will be the same IF we bid on him

Besides, scouring is about much more than just trying to find bargains. It’s about finding the right personality, the right skill set and the right attitude. People forget that.

Re: these reports saying that Manchester had a scout at a Leeds match watching a particular player.

How do they know which of the 11 players, the scout is observing?

Unless of course the scout tells everyone around him :)

Ofcourse no one is denying it. But spending 40m on a championship player is more riskier than spending 40m on a player from one of the key leagues. While I agree most transfers are a risk, the quality of the league matters. I would rather take a 40m gamble from Spain or Germany than championship.

The bench
Harry Maguire, Andy Robertson, James Maddison and many others played in the Championship.

This is when we should be buying them, not a transfer later when their price has went through the roof.
Mahrez, Drinkwater, Schmeichel, Vardy from Leicester’s title winners alone

You can find very good players from Championship. 16 out of 23 of England’s 2018 World Cup squad played in Championship at some point of their career. Dan James was a perfect example of smart transfer strategy, low risk, high reward. Not the usual ”let’s sign him for 100m£ after one season in Leicester”.

Even if you look at players that last season played in championship and now play in epl: Tuanzebe, James, Mount, Abraham, Grealish, Mcginn., Aarons, Henderson...

Yeah why arn't we buying from the championship? At the very least all of our backups should be star players from the championship. They translate great to the EPL and are low cost. We could use a backup DM, creative mid, right wing, etc..

We should look more at the Championship yes. Just look at some of the quality players in the PL now. Robertson is probably the best left back in the league. Maddison is great for Leicester. Grealish the same for Villa, etc.
Nathan Ferguson, left back from West Brom might be worth a look. Doing great this season for them. Kalvin Phillips is class, and would improve us.
No need to buy fancy foreign players, just because is sounds better to sign a player from Spain than one from the Championship...

What about buying a foreign player from the Championship, would that also be considered “fancy”?

Apparently we scouted this guy twice now. He does look quite good the way he passes balls around.

How's he done so far?

Been very good this season but signed a new contract in September so it will make it harder for us.

That dude can run. He is all around the pitch.
He's the type of player we lack, a player who can pass the ball around from deep & there isn't many currently about. This one had to be from Leeds.

This sounds like an ideal signing for us but would be very surprised if it happened in January with Leeds very much in the hunt for promotion back to the premier league for the first time in 16 years. The only thing that might happen is Utd agree a deal with him for the summer and loan him back to Leeds until the end of the season.

SIXTEEN YEARS??!!
Jesus Christ. I honestly didn't know Leeds had been out of the top flight that long. Absolutely mental.

I want them back. I'm not a Manc and I lived up that way a long time so I don't have the same venom for Leeds like proper died in the wool Mancs do

One of the most impressive things about Phillips is his physicality, absolute beast in the tackle and his mobility is unreal, would be a very shrewd signing for us

I thought he looked a bit slow against MU in preseason? That would have my only really worry about him.

In terms of stats I do notice that his completion rate is not impressive. Especially considering what type of player he is described to be. But there may be different reasons to this.

He would be a great signing for us but I can see Leeds finally getting promoted this season and if so I cannot see him leaving until the end of next season.

So, we're presuming that he would be replacing the soon-to-be-leaving Matic, then? I'm happy for us to take a risk on a Championship talent as a squad option replacement.

He plays a lot of long passes (5th most completed long passes in the Championship) which contributes to it, his short pass completion is about 88%

Is he a deep lying playmaker type?

Or an all rounder?
All action DM. Run for 90 minutes, strong in the tackle, can hit some great passes and through balls at times too. Leeds fans call him ‘the Yorkshire Pirlo’ because of his long passing ability.
