I think Roma were offered to buy him for £18 million but they did not accept this.
He s no young anymore... 30 years.
Footballers value tend to depreciate once they get older than 30.

Yes absolutely and that is also when the injuries normally start to kick in.

Then I hope we sell him for bucket loads because he is worth loads more than we bought players like Lindelof & Bailly for - hate that we sell players for pennies.

Knowing us we probably did a deal before he hit any form though.

Gets left alone by his partners and midfielders time and time again. He is the only one i feel who defends strikers, Lindelöf usually defends space. If the other CBs are ball watching, he will get blamed.

He is not perfect, but he is our best CB, quite easily

Agree.

Zonal, reactionary and imo pathetic defending. Former is not a bad thing at all but when we are poorly coached, it just exposes the lack of footballing intelligence/mentality others have.

Lindelof must have played 3/4 of his passes square to Maguire today. I'm not expecting quarter back 40 yards ball into feet but ffs, take some responsibility.

He had been horrendous lately. His presence allows the opposition so much space — he never fully commits to a high line, being (rightfully) wary of his lack of pace. When was the last time we caught anyone offside?

He’s a good center back for a low defensive back line, but I can’t see him excelling in a more modern pressing-based style of play.

edit: horrendous compared to the standards of a top team, compared to our current one he’s just distinctly average.

Sorry harms but this is absolute nonsense, Leicester for a start don't play in a low block and Maguire excels in games like yesterday where we play a high line and he steps into the midfield often.

There's a reason Pep wanted him for his modern pressing-based style of play.

Leicester’s defensive line’s average position was 41,6 meters from a goal last season. League’s average was 42,8, United’s last season was 43,1. It is a big difference by the way, I feel that I should specify as it’s not a common stat.

Unsurprisingly, Maguire’s best games were when we sat back and played on a counter, like against Chelsea.

I always hate the argument of “someone wanted to sign him” as we never know, how significant was their interest. In the end City backed out and didn’t challenge us for his signature - it also probably says something.

One thing I need to give him credit for is fronting up with the media after every match, especially those when we're tumescent, despite the fact he cannot keep a clean sheet to save his life in the league right now. That's a real part of being a captain and leader, and is why I gave Young a pass at times, but have nothing but contempt for Valencia who, despite being club captain in really challenging times, never found the courage to do it once.

It makes total sense that Maguire is good when sitting back and waiting for the opponent... but have you seen Maguire his acceleration, speed and how he turns? How is that ever going to work with a high defensive line combined with pressing?

I refuse to believe Pep wanted him. Just a media thing.

According to Pep they were interested, but in fairness he wouldn’t be the first manager to lie in a press conference.

Pep said himself that they wanted him and Sam Lee, the best connected City journalist said that they bid £75m but would go no higher, they tried to send Otamendi the other way but Leicester but that fell through because of Otamendi's wages. It's about as far from 'just a media' thing as you'll get with a transfer. The actual manager admitting it and the best connected journalists giving highly detailed accounts of the transfer.

Pep is generally overly positive in his comments regarding the opposition. That said, I’m sure that City was interested, but it was also Pep who was caught on camera instructing De Bruyne to push into Maguire’s zone to exploit his lack of pace; and it was Pep, who refused to pay over the top to get him. Hence why I don’t really like this argument.

Thankfully 2 posters shut this post up immediately so I didn't have to. You probably also refuse to believe we play in red at home if it doesn't suit your point/agenda @Stadjer
Why is it that the moment you dont agree with someone that you have an agenda? Im not even claiming Maguire is a bad defender but he has some very clear weak parts in his game.

You think Maguire would do well with a lot of space behind him? I seriously doubt that he would. If Maguire is defending near the half way line and the other team will start a counter the attacker of the countering team will have taken a shot on goal before Maguire has turned around. Have you seen how Maguire turns around and how quick he goes from standing still to a full sprint? Both take a while.

If Maguire would play for Guardiola he would need a goalkeeper like Neuer behind him (sweeper keeper far outside his box) and a defender like Rio next to him (very quick and the vision to anticipate to prevent counters).

Like @Dec9003 said... Guardiola could have made it up just as easy. Ofcourse he isnt going to say "Maguire is shit.. good luck at United slabhead"

Dont think Pep has any say in how high their bids go.

Yes, tonnes of slow defenders have spent their entire careers doing it. Vidic was a perfect example, but he had Rio & Evra to cover him and only very very rarely did he get exposed.

Or if you really want a modern example then look no further than Mats Hummels who not only played a high line with Bayern but was a massive part of a Jörgen Klopp gegenpressing side. Hummels turns as slow as Maguire and has a slower top speed but had no problems with it.

And disagreeing is not an agenda, denying the obvious truth is, Pep wanted Maguire, has admitted it himself and looking at his side this year you can clearly see why. City would be many points better off with him.

It’s a completely baseless assumption on my point, but I’d hazard a guess that if Pep really wants someone, they’d be willing to pay more than just for a name from a Pep-vetoed list.

They wouldn't pay £75m for VVD either.

Sam Lee has mentioned that it will be interesting to see if they break this self-imposed transfer limit they have. They try to promote this weird idea that they don't spend much because their highest transfer fee is like £50m or such.

To be honest over the last month or so I’ve been really disappointed with him and that’s with a low bar as I’ve never really been that impressed with him. But yesterday apart from that 20 minute spell where we conceded and it looked like Newcastle were going to tear us a new one on every attack he was pretty good.

Don’t know if that’s because we shifted out of 433 and dropped Fred back and had Shaw and Bissaka drop back a bit but what ever tactical shift happened we vastly improved and Newcastle from that point just played in to his hands.

Hes never going to like it against teams that face him up or play balls inbehind him but any team that is just going to pump long balls or passes up then he is going to eat them up and that’s what Newcastle started doing yesterday.

Was hoping that shot he took was going to find the top corner as much as I was hoping Lindeloff left footed volly was gonna connect and find a top corner.

Valencia’s English is fine. He just prefers not to speak it in public. Valencia being appointed captain is a great example of how standards fell at the club over a number of years. Club captaincy is a leadership role and Valencia showed none of that. It’s only natural to lose respect for him. It was great that we showed him the door.

Fantastic. Him and Lindelof handled Barnes and wood without any fuss. People will still slate him because he didn’t score 9 headers

Good game from Maguire and was helped by Matic very well especially on set pieces.

It can't be easy being a cb in United. Both him and Lindelöf flawless, and they are still miles from other players ratings despite not conceding. Very strange.

How would you rate him and Lindelof? They did their job but did nothing special... a 8 would be too high and 5 too low in my opinion. So anything inbetween would be fair imo.

Good game from him. Passing not always great, but had some great runs. Very good in the air and pretty much won it all.

Well it all depends. When we concede some goals their rating pummels (especially Lindelofs) even if they have played fine or even good. They are judged on a different level than other players. Maguire is too expensive and Lindelof is too soft and bad in the air, or so they say. When they don't make any mistakes, as yesterday it's: "They did their job" That's more than a bit unfair imo.

The CB's have arguably been some of the best players this season but if you read this forum you wouldn't get that impression.

The problem lies elsewhere.

There is always a tendency to give attacking players higher ratings. Personally I agree with you, 6-7 is fair for both Lindelof and Maguire considering the team they were playing against. Same with Martial. He did his job but nothing more as I expect him to score against Burnsley, also worth 6-7.

He’s just playing same as he did at Leicester, was never worth anything like what we paid.

Looks comfortable on the ball before taking 8 touches to do what he could in 2, not much of a defender, but hey at least he is more aesthetically pleasing than Smalling if not as effective.
