After watching a couple of games with him, I don't think he's even worth the 45+15. If they want 80mil we should immediately walk away.

Still confident this will be done but will be in the last days of the window with giga money spent after wasting loads of times for nothing. That's how our clueless Woodward does his job.
Rinse and repeat x1000000.

I don’t think United are tight, but very inept.

Didn’t we walk away from Maguire for £60m and then go back a year later for £80m?

Wouldn’t surprise me if we go back for Bruno in the Summer for £70m

Another farce transfer window.

These is what we get for having morons like judge and Woodward, plus having a shambolic scouting system where we only seem to end up chasing obvious over hyped talents

Same but from the looks of it he might be out of our market pull ability right now. We maybe need a few Fernandes types and to start competing before we can really pull in these exceptional talents.
Yeah probably. Should maybe have taken a punt earlier. Werner is rumoured to have a 25m release clause as well. I feel we really dont shop around for players or find any value.

65m for a player who has no premier league experience is quite a bit of a gamble and i hope if we pay it it does pay off. Lets face it, 54m for Fred and hes only just started to put some performances in and is fairly mediocre. We dont want another of those

Lads, you could save yourself a lot of disappointment if you just accept that this was never going to happen. There was never a chance Utd were going to spend what it would take to get him. A low ball offer is not a serious offer.

The only thing you can rely on today when it comes to Manchester United is the club will continue to make decisions that fundamentally go against what any of us actually want. We want investment in our team and around the football side of the club. They want to make money and that’s all that counts. Every decision is based on a calculation - and it’s not a sporting one.

The Fellaini deal was more laughable.

If Sporting are continuously shifting the goalposts then just tell them to feck off and walk away from negotiations

Woodward has proven multiple times he's a crap negotiator. It's weird to mention Maguire when we refused to pay 60m for him the previous summer then splashed 80m on him exactly the next summer.

Anyway will be fun watching your opinion when we end up paying 70-80m for him after wasting 2 more weeks of this.
If we do then I’ll completely agree with you but I’ve given my opinion on this transfer already and what I think is happening.

We never intended to buy a midfielder this month and have our targets for the summer window, targets which are in no way available now. Those plans have possibly changed, somewhat reluctantly, due to McTominay’s injury at the end of December and Pogba’s recurrent injury in early January which required surgery and sees both players out for months.

Fernandes is on the market and Sporting are actively trying to sell him, it's pretty obvious that we don't view him as the answer to all out midfield problems. I'd wage a good bet that it was Sporting who have approached and offered him to us and I think our response has been measured. Yes, we need a midfielder. No, we do not view him as our number one target and as such he's a squad player long term for us. Therefore we're not interested in discussing marquee signing fees. We've set our valuation of him and our attitude is that for £45m + bonuses, he would represent value and it would be fair business to paper over immediate cracks and add strength in depth long term. We're not going to piss about agreeing a transfer up to £70m+ because the club have decided we're not that desperate and in a month or two we could conceivably have McTominay, Pogba, Fred, Matic and Periera all fit and available which would tie us over to the summer when we can look to spend £70m+ on our first choice targets.

In short, we view him as a squad player long term and are not interested in paying the marquee prices Sporting are quoting. Rightly so.

Tbh, watching him for 10/15 mins today at Watford, I really liked what I saw of Gedson Fernandes. For a loan deal, we may find that we have potentially missed a trick by not following up on that one.

He's 25 and has only ever played well in the Portuguese league so I find the clamour for his signature alittle strange if i'm honest. If it was a young player like Florentino Luis I could understand the appeal due to the huge upside and potential future progression. But Bruno Fernandes at 25 doesn't have the same appeal to me and I feel we could probably do better in the summer especially for the reported price.

I wouldn't be disappointed if we signed him but I wouldn't be too fussed if we didn't either.

Exactly how I feel, part of me hopes we don't sign him and wait till the summer and get one of the English number 10's instead

Put a final offer in, give them a deadline , and move on i find it hard to believe these idiots dont have contingency plans, we all know clubs feck around moving goalposts, so have backup deals in place.

People need to remember that the reason every club will make us overpay is because of our own making and the situation we've put ourselves in.

I'm surprised any supporter has a preference to avoid overpaying rather than improve the quality of the squad. The club has a right to decide the cost of improvement is too high and they'd rather go with punts (like James) and hope it works out i just don't see why any fan would back it.

Yep. I hate Woodward but he's right not to pay more than 45m. We're in this mess exactly because we squandered incredible amount of money on dross and mediocrity. Sporting are clearly trying to con us.

Part of me says that we should look at maddison and grealish or cantwell even. Players who play very well in poorer teams (maybe not maddison) in our league who we know can perform and dont need to adapt. Would also be a lot cheaper than Fernandes.

This is my feeling entirely.

Personally, whether this goes through or not, I'm finding this thread rather entertaining.

It's the fact that all the negotiating is going on this far into January. You don't have to be in the transfer window to negotiate a signing. It's clear there's no fecking plan because if there was, we'd have sorted this signing way in advance of January.

He only wanted London as his parents live there.
