Brilliant footballer. Hope he avoids injuries and keeps up the current attitude. It’s rare to see young players with such football intelligence. I strongly disagree with everyone who doesn’t see it with him. His biggest problem is the fact that he plays with some not very good footballers.

I believe he is an incredible talent.

He recieves the ball confidently, can beat his man and lay it off, can pass exceptionally well. That switch from LB to RB was top drawer last night. Seems positionally aware and doesn't get beaten 1 on 1.

And his attitude is perfect.

Top player for me.

And how many crosses did he have today? Zero. Everytime he got the ball down the flank he passed it back to a midfielder. In fact, we only had 5 crosses all game. 3 from Fred and 2 from James. But that's what happens when you play a right footed player at LB. When he overlaps he has the chance to cross with his left but instead he cuts back to get on his right foot. This is why I would like to see Williams played on the right. There's a reason why Robertson and TAA get so many assists. It's because they cross the ball as FB's should. And they do it from their proper side of the pitch...
Genuine question, who would he have been crossing to? We had no on in the box. You think Lingard, James and Martial were going to score from his cross?

I'd say he was very aware to not bother crossing.

The kid hasn't had half a season of football yet and he's probably played Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and Wolves more than the bottom teams

I think he's fantastic, yes he's got areas to improve on but who doesn't at his age? the progress he's shown in just 6 months is staggering.

Because we have zero presence in the penalty box when it comes to crossing situations. Comparing him to TAA and Robertson, you also have to look at the way we play. I'd say that 9 out of 10 times he gets the ball high up the field it is when we have build the play up very slowly only for the opposition to get all their players back and sit deep. That's is not a good crossing opportunity unless you have a very strong attacker who is able to win an aerial duel without coming into the box with momentum.

Liverpool are able to cross to players who aren't more physicality than Martial because the way the play. When playing against deep defences, they shift the play from side to side very quickly to rattle the oppositions defensive structure, which creates littel pockets and room for TAA and Robertson to either pick out someone for a cross or a cutback pass.

As others have said, you dont just cross for the sake of crossing so that people on forums can stop saying 'her had 0 crosses today'.
Crosses need to have a purpose especially due to the high nature of the ball being given away on them.

Im astounded people said he had a poor game as well.

I thought he was superb last night. Alongside Matic and De Gea as our best players.

People need to realise we were playing City away, one of the best teams out in and out of possession.

He done very well. The one bit I liked is right at the end, instead of hoofing it, he took the ball down and looked for a pass. He clearly has great composure.

Was this when he was the last man back? He took it down, turned and played it out wide to the left. It was just so calm and composed with city players closing down on him.

For me has been the shining spark in a bad season. Been superb and nice to see we do not need to invest in this area. Should be first choice next season if he isnt already.

Yep, that just shows you he has the mentality and the skill to play at this level.

I am actually shocked at the people who think he is rubbish.

Annoyingly, fans think every full back has to be like Robertson and Trent when we play a different way and our full backs are probably better defensively.

I would rather keep him and Shaw for next season than spend £80m on Chilwell who is no better.

Really big fan of the lad... but really surprised how few people on here mention the fact that he is clearly hamstrung in an attacking sense by being right footed. Would make so much more sense to give him a run at RB... but I guess that isn’t happening when we’ve just spent £50m on a RB, regardless of the fact that he has a nose bleed every time he crosses the halfway line.

I've seen this mooted on the site

I thought he was ok last night. I am noticing recently a lot of his passes are coming backwards or sidewards instead of forward. I have said on many occasions that our mid and forwards are static so this might be a reason but for me, he has to start running past his opponents and switching play more often.

Defense wise, I rate him highly but he needs to start looking to being a bit more attack minded imo.

The fact he isn't getting a run at right back is probably more to do with the fact he's a fecking left back.

Oh yeah totally logical, play a lazy footballer who can attack and defend in equally bad measure as opposed to just playing Williams in his actual position.

He sort of did cross yesterday though. Maybe they counted more as long passes but they were just really poor chipped balls in to the box for keeper catching practice.

I don’t think he was great yesterday. He does do some truly impressive things in games like yesterday. He has moments where I’m like ok wow. However he still has so much to learn. he day dreams a lot, stands off people, gets out of position a lot and doesnt tend to keep the width very well.

What he does very well is the intensity in his play to get forward. No second thought he just goes with everything And he looks confident and capable on the ball. Maybe too confident sometimes. There is no doubt he is a talent but again last night struggled to hold the shape and for me wasn’t spotting danger or tucking in to help out.

Those things are things he’ll get with experience and playing. Hopefully he gets many more minutes to keep on improving.

Do agree on the crossing, nothing is more annoying than people saying but they don’t cross. This team isn’t built for that and we don’t even get the ball forward quick enough to get the fullbacks in a position to put in good crosses.

Agree to an extent but when you're chasing a goal in the last minute or two, putting the ball in behind the defense and giving our strikers something to attack is the best option.

Yes in principle it is, but our striker doesnt occupy the space behind. Martial was never in the box.

Making of a great player, Highlight of the season for us. Hopefully stays level headed and pushes on even more once a new improved contract is offered to him

He has absolutely nothing to offer for us. He is classic example of a graduate from our academy. He likes to run and he runs a lot, but that's just it. His is not a good defender, he doesnt create chances or key passes for teammates, cant cross or doesnt even try to. His first idea with the ball on opposition half is to stop it and pass it backwards. He can dribble (even Lingard can do that), but once again he doesnt try to very often, average in duels. Often lacks discipline, dives a lot (like Mctominay or Lingard) and for some reason as a right footed players plays as a left back. Some mastraclass in our academy right there. And with his 172 cm he is not strong enough (yet), this can actually come with time, he is still 19 years old.

Absolutly no way we should put him in starting XI instead of Shaw, because while he is also usually useless for our attack , he can at least defend very well and thats something Williams can only dream of. He can be squad player or he can go on loan to prove himself, but this is not good for United level and if he doestn make a huge progress, it never will be. Btw its same with Dalot. He is just not good enough so we are trying to create space in 3/5/2 formation for him but he still not relevant in our game.

He plays with exactly the kind of swagger and confidence that a United player should have. Never panics under pressure like some of his more senior teammates. It's just great to see it.

He was the one who played very good diagonal pass isn't it, at least looked like him. Whoever did it, it was very good pass, something our midfielders don't try.

We should be doing more of that, switching point of attack with just 1 pass.

Think long pass switches are a big weakness for us, especially in midfield without PP. Hopefully Bruno can help that.

Why is it unreasonable to suggest playing a right footed player at Right Back rather than Left Back?

Yeah, said it in other thread too. The way we switch the play is just pointless. We move it from FB - CM1 - CM2 - FB2, that's too many passes and touches. It gives too much time for opponents to set in position.

One of the best attribute of Scholes and Carrick was effortlessly switching the direction of attack, with one pass they created 1v1 chance for attacker. Apart from Pogba none of our CMs are capable of that pass. Like you said, hopefully Bruno will be that player for us.

Because they're different positions?
Because we have already have a perfectly good right back?
Because Williams is comfortably our best left back?

Weird obsession with changing players positions on here, yes he's right footed, yes he's a left back. Talk me through how that went for Dennis Irwin.

CBJ, McNair & Blackett to a lesser extent. At the moment he offers next to nothing offensively and is very questionable defensively. He averages 1 cross a game in the PL and 1 accurate cross every 5 games so far. The idea that he offers more than Shaw in that regard doesn't seem to be based on anything much.

I get that he's a kid and can improve but I'm sceptical that he has it in his locker. If you're talking about a modern attacking full back compare him to Saka at Arsenal, it's night and day comparing what they can both do in the final third.
I think with young players coming into the team you have to measure their performance on two levels. What they bring to the team now, and what they can possibly bring in the future. I think he differs from those players you mentioned because they probably looked better in the few performances in LVG's system with his coaching compared to what they ever showed previously in the U21's. Van Gaal was very good at utilising players for a specific purpose and it gave a good platform for these kids. The excitement we got from that was cool, but we all knew these players had a long way to go, as has Williams.

But based on the qualities he has shown to have in the U21's alone, I rate him higher than those players. I think he has taken to the PL-level incredibly fast, way above expectations but it is clear to me he possesses a lot of qualities he just isn't able to perform at that level yet. There is no shame in that what so ever, as the qualities that make him able to play at this level at 19 is something we do not usually see. He is technically good, composed on the ball and good passes. He also manage to play his game and keep up with the physicality and pace at that level which is very good. To me, he is showing maturity, discipline, heart and professionalism. These are qualities that might not always make him stand out right now, but things that makes him seem like a certainty for the future.

While there is no guarantee for anything, I'd like to value these traits as I don't see them in young players that often. He has obviously been a good student, and his understanding of his game and his role already is vital, imo. If that is the things that comes easy to him, it means he can keep a certain level of consistency from a young age and focus on developing other aspects of his game while playing at a high level. It is a great platform for reaching the top, and while there is no certainty of him becoming the next Lahm the signs are more than encouraging. He still has a lot of qualities to add to his game and things he haven't shown at this level yet.

I want to add that going up against Mahrez is very hard. I didn't like how he approached him defensively 1vs1 but tbf he was isolated with him with a lot of space behind him, so I do understand how he couldn't be more aggressive against City. He obviously lack experience so certain situations at the top level will be completely new to him. Everyone can afford to have some patience with kids on these things especially. If he'd look totally out of his depth or affected by mistakes I'd be the first one to mention it because it goes against the things I've summarised above.

I also think he wasn't as good offensively against City because we lacked an attacker and him and Shaw took turns keeping width. It got congested on that side as it always gets when Shaw plays, and especially with both of them there. I didn't enjoy that aspect at all. Williams has usually been a breath of fresh air, being a lot quicker and dynamic in his movement to create more assuredness through that side, which has helped it not get congested and crowded. Wasn't the case against City though. I also want to add that I think Shaw has been decent the last couple of games as well.

I don't think you've actually watched him play if you believe all that. Yes he's developing but that's the most strange and one eyed assessment of him as a player I've seen.

He’s not better than Luke Shaw, certainly not yet anyway. If Shaw is fit, he should certainly be playing.
