I will be amazed if we pull off a decent signing. Tottenham and Chelsea are both looking and failed so far. Mertens would be ideal.

Crazy isn't it?

Back in the day, Sir Alex casually top up his stock of strikers even though he had a couple of world class strikers.
1994/95: Cantona, Cole, Hughes, McClair
1999/00: Yorke, Cole, Sheringham, Solskjaer
2003/04: RVN, Saha, Solskjaer, Forlan
2009/10: Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo, Berbatov
2012/13: RVP, Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck

2019/20: Rashford, Martial, Greenwood

Also compare with what City and Liverpool have had in past 2 years.

I was dubious about it but its strange that Ole went on the record with hos comments last night. He was dismissing links to Fernandes as a waste of a question on the day the deal pretty much went through. He's been non commital about transfer business, backing the owners etc. To suddenly say now that he wants a striker I hope means that we're actively working on something (that was maybe contingent on what the outlay for Fernandes was).

Ole's publically putting pressure and setting expectations of Matt Judge & team.

Compare that to what we have had and also what City and Liverpool have had in past 2 years.
If you exclude the time when Fergie played with 2 strikers, Ronaldo was typically a wide forward, similar to what Rashford is now, Rooney played as a #10 and the other options like Tevez and Berbatov were usually unhappy when the options were too many. Its a really delicate balance to have and operate with 4 attacking players.

Wtf, I swear I didn’t read your post before I posted mine about the Haaland basket! Weird!!
It's clear that you two have been all over Love Island - all your eggs are in that!

I wonder if we can get one of Edouard or Morelos? both fit the age criteria and both have British football experience plus experience of European football. If neither of those, I think somebody that can play as the 9 but also as the inside right would be ideal as that is an area we are also massively lacking!

Sure.

My point was about the lack of quality AND depth that we have up front right now.

I understand the Chinese League has been suspended, not sure for how long, but possibly a loan signing from one of those clubs. Arnoutevic perhaps?
Would be a cunning plan, but not sure if they’d be able to get to the UK in time with flights having difficultly getting permission to leave.

The CSL is suspended because of Coronavirus so Pelle, Rondon and Arnautovic may be set for a move.

Would Aleksandar Mitrovic be a good choice for striker? Has proved he can score in the PL as he managed 11 goals and 3 assists in 18/19 season for Fulham. He´s big, strong and goes for everything in the box. He has a presence about him and I think he´s one that could come in and do a job. He´s not the best striker in the world but I think we are underestimating what he could bring. Having a striker that can head a ball and make defenders uncomfortable in physical duels would be a good thing to have. Martial is no striker and we are putting to much pressure on Greenwood. I think Mitrovic is the best option if possible.

Isn't this "Fergie used to have four strikers" thing a bit misleading though, as he used to play two strikers whereas we only play one, so his group of four is equivalent to two now, with 50% starting each game

Yes and do. We play with 3 attackers, we have 4, including a rookie and a new signing from the championship.

What about that Milik at Napoli?

United fan, apparently.

Dodgy knees, though.

The Times are linking us with Rondon. I think Pellè or perhaps even Sandro Wagner would be better options from the CSL.

There's also Eran Zahavi who has been the best player in the league in recent seasons and has done well recently at international level too, scoring 11 goals for Israel during their Euro 2020 qualifying. He's publicly left China due to the virus situation and has placed doubt on whether he'd be going back. He's really worth taking a look at and I'm surprised that he has not been linked to Western European clubs in recent days.

I'm reading Chelsea won't stop Giroud joining Spurs. We should be all over that. We should have been all over that years ago when Mou was manager though too.

How about Ollie Watkins from Brentford? I admittedly know nothing about him other than he's the leading scorer in the Championship, he's only 24 years old, he's English, and judging from his Youtube video, he has good off the ball movement judging by how many tap ins he gets. He's also brave in the air which is a trait Ole said yesterday that he is looking for

That's Hamsik.

This is Milik. He's got a 'Welcome to Manchester United' compilation on YouTube and everything.

Has to be the number one choice.

Only problem is his contract ends in the summer. So he's more likely to wind that down in favour of a huge sign on fee in the summer.

From Wikipedia, "Milik is a devoted fan of Manchester United. Milik says he "dreams of playing for Manchester United", but insists he's "far from it".[48]"

Time to put an add out in the paper? Get Custis on it.

Didn't realise that. I'd definitely take him on a free in the summer. Was a handful in Napoli Juventus game I watched.

Does getting a 'backup' striker that is nowhere near good enough to lead the line at say.. liverpool, Real Madrid, or Bayern mean that Martial is the number 1 striker/starter when fit here at UTD?

If so, my thoughts are that we need a better striker than Martial to come in to completely share the top spot. We need to upgrade in positions of weakness so that we have great options, not just someone to do a job.

Getting Rondon, Slimani, Giroud or anyone of this calibre is not the right thing do. Cheap and short term it may be but not good enough imo. Hopefully it would be until we find the 'right' player in the very near future or Mason turns out to be that guy.

Maybe it just comes down to budget?

I think that we had put all of our eggs into the Haaland basket, then royally cocked that up, trying to play hardball, finished with those eggs on our face..!!
I can see that being the case.
But then, if reports are true that him and his entourage insisted on a 50m (regardless £ or €) buyout clause I can understand why we turned down the deal.
Anyhow, even I'm not holding my breath. I doubt we'll pull one out of the bag and get a striker, be it on a 6 month loan.

It would clearly be until the summer when a better long term option would be available. No use not bringing anyone in as cover if a longer term option isn't available. The situation will be reviewed again in the summer.

If this is true then we should have gone for him or go for him. Wouldn't Napoli want to sell and gain profit than lose him for nothing?
