So I’ve just finished watching The Good Place and now my eyes are red raw as I think it is one of the most satisfying finales I’ve ever seen. The show that is so much about the quirks of life being able to give such a varied nuance view of death in its many forms was just mind-boggling and it got me thinking, what was the best TV finale of all time? Not a season, but the final episode.

My head and heart always goes back to Six Feet Under. Whilst I absolutely love the show I’ll admit the middle seasons looked to take joy in torturing the characters but the finale is a thing of absolute perfection. I won’t go into the details for spoilers (although it’s now been 15yrs since it ended!) but here is the finale six and a half minutes, those who have seen it know what I’m one about.

So, whilst I would say there are better shows such as Breaking Bad, I cant think of a better Finale.

What would be your picks?

Mr Robot is a recent one that springs to mind.

Chernobyl, too.

The Wire had a poor final season but the finale itself was superb.

The wires ending wasnt a blockbuster or a huge talking point like the Sopranos but it was perfect ending for the show.

After all that things just went on as normal, itl never change.

Game of Thrones

The Sopranos were amazing. From the recent ones, I enjoyed the ending of Veep.

Once I understood it, the Mad Men finale was moving.

Others that come to mind would be Justified and Battlestar Galactica.

BSG was fine save for the luddites aspect, that annoys me still. I'm ok with God, weirdly enough. NewsRadio and Community had satisfying finishes as well.

Sam turning out the lights at the end of Cheers. When I leave a job I now make it a point to turn out the lights as I go. Annoys the feck out of anyone working late though.

Blackadder's ending was pretty good too.

Blackadder. Really emotional ending for what was meant to be a comedy.

Also, Afterlife had a really great ending too.

The US Office has a great ending. Just a shame you've got to wade through about 40 ropey episodes to get to it. Similar with Parks and Rec, final season is quite weak, but the finale was cool.

Breaking Bad was good too. Too many recent TV dramas have ended up losing their way. BB was solid right to the end. Last episode was rather gripping.

Sadly cant say GoT. Ruined everything. Nothing made any sense. Dont even acknowledge it anymore.

I'd say Breaking bad was perfect.

The Shield, Friday Night Lights, Mad Men and The Wire are all excellent choices. I have yet to finish Mr Robot though

Mortal combat: Conquest. They had originally planned another season where the good guys came back and won, but the show did so poorly that the last episode was Shao Kahn killing Raiden after showing him the masks of all the heroes.

Veep. The Shield. Breaking Bad (even though Felina was weak, Ozy & Granite State sort of made up for it)

Just finished Justified and I didn't realise how much I'd come to enjoy the company of the likes of Raylan Givens, Boyd and Ava Crowder.

After a merely decent season 5, season 6 was terrific with the very last scene moving me in ways I genuinely didn't see coming.

"We dug coal together."

Man, I'm tearing up again here!

Ironically none of the HBO shows. Every single one of them ended controversial or crap. Sopranos was good I think for the point it made. boardwalk empire was kinda random, the wire was ok ish. OZ was kinda just stupid and out of nowhere. Game of thrones....yeah let's not. We know why.

Band of brothers and Deadwood was great though and westworld, we'll see what happened with that.

Imo I think breaking bad ended perfectly. I like lost ending controversial as it is.

Writing a good ending to a TV show is really hard. Most of the great TV shows out there just sort of end and that's that.

There are two exceptions though: Mr. Robot and Breaking Bad.

Six Feet Under was the best.
Ok so I've just watched this and I've heard for years how SFU has the best finale.

Did nobody else find it really weird and a bit corny? Like everyone in really bad 'older' make-up with some characters appearance barely even changing, and they're all just flopping over and dying the way a child would pretend to die. Brenda's was the worst

Maybe it was a 90s thing and the make-up/effects didn't age well. They always seemed to really ham up the dramatic parts (same in West Wing when Leo has his heart attack). Nate having his numb arm ended up making me laugh the way he kept repeating it as well. Just didn't find some of it believable, felt like a comedy sketch.
