Just wanted to make a thread on this for anyone that's planning to go see a movie soon, this movie definitely doesn't dissappoint.

I absolutely loved it and have already went to see it twice. Really good enjoyable story with multiple laugh out loud scenes (I've still missed certain parts of the dialogue as I couldn't hear over everyone laughing.)

Mcconaughey, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam all great!

That fell a bit short for me. They tried to reproduce a similar vibe as in Snatch but everything seemed a bit off. Can't really explain why , but none of the characters appeared believable.

Just saw this movie. It was bloody amazing. Probably prefer it to all his other movies. None of the twists were to elaborate and it just flows so nicely, wasn't dull for a moment. 10/10

I quite liked it regardless but the characters were all very interchangeable for me. All smooth, fast talkers with the same personalities.

Yeah the characters weren't as well defined as something like Lock, Stock. Still a good film nonetheless though, his films are usually worth seeing for some of the dialogue alone.

What?
Well, his typical persona is romcom lead, right?
The Wedding Planner (2001), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Failure to Launch (2006), Fool's Gold (2008), Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009),...
I haven't seen the movies you mentioned, but I guess Gold is a sequel to Fool's Gold (2008) and possibly Free State of Jones is on how Connor 'Dutch' Mead changes his name to Jones and becomes a hipster and a sovereign citizen after being shown his future at the end of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

This gave me a chuckle. Assuming not serious.

Just went and saw it. It’s good. Colin Farrell is fantastic as always. He’s brilliant in dark comedies.

“Are you training or what you black cnut?”

“Did he just call me a black cnut? He can’t call me that boss, that’s racist”

“It’s not racist Errol. Because you are black, and you are also a cnut. Those are just the facts. Hence, you’re a black cnut. So no, it’s not racist is it?”

Hugh Grant is also terrific. I mean the whole cast is tbh, but those two stand out.

It’s not quite as good as I had expected from this thread, but thoroughly enjoyable, and I will watch again.

Probably set a record for the amount of times the word cnut has been said in an American cinema. I heard people gasping, it was great.

Watched this last night after being told how good it was and that Hugh Grant was “back to his best” etc well i just didn’t see it. Don’t get me wrong it was entertaining but some parts felt really hammy, the million different ways they tried to make “weed” sound ganster like calling it “Super Skunky Cheese” or something was abit cringe. I thought Hugh Grant was “okay” but he didn’t seem natural to me, too cheesily scripted even if he was supposed to be abit humorous, which actually is probably my main complaint of the whole film. Like the exchange below, just felt abit cringey;

Also, Michael’s associate guy, i forget his name, but he was clearly supposed to be played by Tom Hardy that they dressed and did the make up on the guy to be exactly like him. He looked weird in it. Colin Farrell and “his boys” was again cheesey/hammy. The usual baddy played by a chinese guy but with a ganstery accent was off putting. The jewish guy looking to buy the business, i mean, in what world would a smug-like character like that be a genuinely believeable antagonist in a film like this?

I just found myself eye rolling through alot of it; like my grandad had tried to make a film about drugs and gansters and how the underworld would work all by using his imagination.

Anyways, I don’t usually review films ever as I’m sure you can tell but felt motivated to do one on this for some reason. Id still give it 6-7/10 though.

I did cringe a little at the black cnut scene. It hardly endeared the audience to a character we're supposed to like, either.

While I agree with the criticisms about the guy buying the business, (it did seem a tad unrealistic) I think his character was done like that for a reason. He's there to represent how far Mickey has come from his roots on the streets, and how he was when he first built his business. They show him going round council estates with a knife, being a footsoldier. Now he's going to poncey dinner parties and trying to get into that circle of people. The jewish guy is meant to symbolise Mickey's aspirations at the start of the film. By the end, he's realised they're a bunch of smug cnuts and re-discovers that mojo he used to have after getting his hands dirty again.

I enjoyed it. It was a good blend of the movie being serious whilst not taking itself too serious - hence some of the characters seem a bit “out of place” I thought. Anyway, I guess I didn’t overthink it too much and just really enjoyed a fun movie - with some good performances, action, some funny bits and a decent plot.

That's where I watched it. Before it I can't remember the last time I watched a new (to me) movie and thought it was a good.
Must give it a go.

So hard to find really good films. I was chatting with my sister recently and we were saying the amount of really good films that come out every year you can probably count on one hand. Most of the netflix originals are rubbish.

Yea finding the same myself although I think covid has to have played a part in that the past couple of years.

Although these short series seem to be the "in" thing now.

I had no idea Charlie Hunnan was the guy in Green Street until I looked him up after watching this.

I watched this several times when it first came out and will probably watch it again now its on netflix.

I definitely wouldn't take it as serious as some are suggesting, it's more like a fun gangster movie for me rather than being too concerned by the plot and character arcs.

I thought it was fantastic, the only thing I thought was silly was the “business deal” no one buys that business for that much for obvious reasons.

Apart from that it was great and really enjoyed the toddlers .

I figured I'd quote this here to spice things up a bit (I know it's the second time I do this, sorry @dumbo):
The Gentlemen

Crap, but not just crap, it is anticinema. And not in a clever deconstructionist sense, but in a lazy, contemptuous one.

From the hollow narrative gimmicks, to the random devolvement into a music video, it's clear that this is the work of a cretinous slob. However the most egregious soiling of celluloid comes in the reimagining of The Long Good Friday's final scenes as an episode of the Power Rangers. The original scene means something, it has cultural heft, it's related to the whole. It isn't something any old Tory dipshit should be allowed to lift and present as their own, without feeling the wrath of the Gods of Cinema.

Mr ex-Madonna has fecked up again. Stolen a fecking career. You should be boycotting this shit.
Oh, and my own opinion:
Well, I enjoyed it. A bit derivative of his earlier work and clearly not as good, and the whole Hugh Grant angle/dynamic/mechanism didn't work very well for me; but I had fun watching it.

It's a shitter version of Lock Stock and Snatch, which still makes it a very enjoyable film and better than anything else Guy Ritchie has done since then. One of the better films I've seen amongst all the remakes and superhero crap in recent years.

Any other movies like this? The Guy Ritchie's British gangster movies with minimum amount of Gun usage feel better than anything based in the US. I have ofcourse seen Snatch, Lock Stock, and Rocknrolla.

Absolutely cracking film and to be honest I had never heard of it as it hadn’t had the same hype as Lock Stock and Snatch. Hugh Grant plays such a great part as the snivelling little weasel and just steals the film for me.

Hardly recognised the ‘Green Street’ guy but he has done quite a few films himself over the years. Colin Farrell is brilliant as coach and he would have been brilliant in Lock Stock or Snatch.

Really worth watching if get the chance
