Barcelona will be allowed to sign striker due to Dembele injury

Why not? It's not a rule to sign like for like replacement. If your back up shit player is injured in a position you are well stacked, how will this rule stop you from signing a player in a position you want to?
Good point. Could they go out and sign a CB over this? Say Lindelof had a 40m release clause and they just thought feck it, lets get him?
Id say the 5 months thing should be until the opening of the window. Any number below that shouldnt count since theres only 3 months of the season left.

They can sign only La Liga players.

Let's see: first, i have to prove that the injury will take him out for at least 5 months. An independent doctor or team of doctors will have to check the player and write the medical record. So, to abuse it, i'd have to bribe a whole lot of people, including my own player who is now going to be out for at least 5 months

Then i have go and find a player i want, from within the country, and trigger his release clause - something i could have easily done during the transfer window if i actually wanted this player and thought he was good enough
Thats the whole point though. It wasn’t done and the window closed and Getafe were happy with their squad.

For me, it’s obvious why the defenders are supporters of the big two, because the rule clearly benefits the big boys and means they don’t need to think about proper squad planning.

Barcelona have been doing this for a while now. Scrimping their wage around messi, relying on a great front three and just keeping the squad tight to facilitate it all.

We have seen the loans of players like Boateng just to cover and get them through the season.

Their policy was always going to backfire and their squad management was always going to give them problems. They should be made to deal with those problems. They shouldn’t be given an easy way out, by being flexible with a silly rule, that doesn’t protect an emergency in this case, but covers their own lack of forward planning and risky squad management.

Not to mention the fact, that yes, it will completely effect another clubs season. Barcelona don’t care about Getafe though and them chasing CL football means nothing if Barca might have to play without Dembele until May.

If that transfer happens, it sums up why so few people will sit down and watch Getafe vs Bilbao on a Friday night, because it means very little to those in power

It might be legal on the face of it, but it still stinks. I would be fuming if I was a Getafe fan, but as long as Barca have a squad of 18 instead of 17, yeah?

When Real fans defend Barca from the angry mob :D

On the subject, the rule is there for a purpose, when two players finished their season because of an injury it is kind of a big problem...

What a weird rule. Managing injuries is part of football. If you cannot adaquately replace an injured player you're squad isn't broad enough and you deserve to lose games because of it. Especially clubs who spend 500 gazillion euro's every other transfer window.

The gap is large enough as is. No need to give the big'uns another leg up by letting them poach a player from the smaller teams when some of their millionairs throws his collections of yachts he paid for with this week's salary.

In the NBA you can’t just take another teams player.

Also Getafes striker has a €10 million release clause, considering they will be budgeted €12 million, if it’s true, they would have no option to replace him.

So it is ridiculous, regardless of the agreement.
The decision is still up to the player, Barca can’t just wave a magic wand and get whoever they want in the league.

In the NBA you can use your injury exception on any player who is on the buyout market. Very few teams have enough for the player exception to spend big on the buyout market after the trade deadline. And like in la liga, the player has to agree to the terms.

All teams in the league agreed to it, and again, Barca aren’t getting a top 30 player even so everyone is crying over nothing

They might get top 50 player or 75th best player, it's doesn't mean much for Barca but the club who lose that player will be losing one of their best player.

This is not against Barca, this is against the stupid rule. If Barca have on;y 17 players then it's their mistake for not signing players in the transfer window.
I agree Barca’s board has made some dumb planning. But Barca could’ve just as easily signed a top 75 player during the winter window. It’s the same thing. They are just signing them 2 weeks after the fact instead of during January.

Will be interesting to see if another team complains about losing a player they wanted to keep but Barca are going to go for a very cheap player who will play twice a month at the most. It doesn’t really move the needle.

The NBA has this rule as well. As does the NHL, the MLB, and the NFL.

It’s actually quite common

What's the point of transfer window and deadlines if all you did was instead of signing player in the window you just did it 2 weeks later.

So many deals are cancelled just because they just missed the deadline, now you are making it sound as if 2 weeks is nothing.

Again this is nothing to do with Barca, can't blame them as there is a rule and they are making use of it. It's just how silly the rule is where established team can just derail small club's season.

I know precious little about these sports, but doesn't the NBA have strict rules regarding the size of a team and amount of starters / subs etc? The balance of power also seems different to me. For instance, I remember the Knicks being very good with Carmello Antony and that Asian dude and now they're bottom feeders. It seems like there's a different dominant force every few years, as opposed to football where there's about 8 super rich clubs pushing all the others into irrelevance in the grand scheme of things.

No idea about the NHL, MLB and NFL. I try not to indulge in these inferior pass times.

I'm kidding sort of

Of course you need player who is injured and then you can play with the system when some unimportant player is injured in position you already have enough depth.
ultimately you need the FA to approve the request and release a license. Highly unlikely that they would for a fringe player

The NBA does have a salary cap, which football does not. The Knicks are also horribly managed, they have the resources to be much better than they are

The NBA does require a minimum amount of players and salaries paid out per team, but in regards to Barca, they only have 17 players registered which is insanely low for a football club.

Knowing the Barca board they’ll eff this up

Because the rarity of losing a player for 6
Months hardly happens. Contrary to popular belief dembele was
Expected back in March from his injury from December. However during his recovery he tore his hamstring. This wasn’t planned by Barca to say “let’s sit out January so we can just make a signing in February”

Plus any Barca dan would rather have even a 70% dembele over some mid table striker who may not even play that much. I would love for the new signing to surprise people,
God knows we could use it for our thin squad.

Plus, most of the January signings tends to be signings from other leagues and bringing them into your own, limiting it just to la liga really limits the pool of players.

The buyout market is essentially free agents, it is not the same, players actually have to negotiate their buyout and take less salary and are usually players who play for bottom dwelling clubs/vets traded.

It’s also available for all teams with cap space and doesn’t specifically have to be used in the injury exception and must be completed by a deadline to make the playoff roster.

Anyway, my issue is with the clarity of the rule, regardless of whether it’s Barcelona or whoever is using it.

They should be forced to play Messi, Suarez or whoever else is there in all the games, including the smaller ones. If they allow Barcelona, they would have to allow Leganes, Valladolid, and all of the smaller clubs to do the same, but you know, politics...

That's your examples? Sports that don't have transfers like football and where players sign contracts with the league? Where there's a cap on every team? They aren't even the same sport.

You know this is bullshit. If this were Real you wouldn't be having it.

I absolutely Would be having it if ALL THE TEAMS AGREED TO IT

This isn’t like a made up rule just to benefit Barca

It is a dumb rule, you know it, I know it and everyone else knows it. The very fact it defeats the entire purpose of a transfer window for starters, it is a kick in the teeth for any youth players and the fact that Barcelona are a big enough club that they should be able to cope more than easily enough. Now if there were some exceptional circumstances, heaven forbid like the Munich disaster was to ever occur again then yeah, sure, people would understand. But it is farcical, plain and simple. Instead of moaning at other fans, labelling other fans as "crying" (and we aren't, we are pointing out the obvious here), you should be directing your opinions at your management and board for their incompetence to ensure the squad is large enough to cope.

The board is 100% incompetent no argument there. But the entire league AGREED to this rule. Whether you care for it or not every team in la liga felt this rule was fine. It’s hardly been used and it’s not like Barca are going to signing de Bruyne or mbappe with the exception.

People crying tears over nothing.
It won’t move the needle significantly at all for the squad problems.

Maybe someone could explain in better detail, but how does it work with the B team? They're technically a fully registered team in another division in the same country I believe, so different from just picking out a player from your own youth academy/team - or can Barca still do that? (I assume they can, but it also has ramifications for the B side).

The only thing that's going to make me cry is your lack of punctuation.

Because all the teams agree to it you are happy with the rule? That's no argument either. Just because the majority agrees on something doesn't make it right. This rule is bullshit. You have 2 transfer windows to sort out your squad for the season and 3 months before it's done you need a special exemption to make more transfers? Explain to me the purpose of transfer windows if you are so fine with this exemption.

Barca didn’t know dembele was done for the entire year Back in January. Lots of other sports allow for this exact same rule after the trade deadline has passed.
It’s also not like Barca can sign a 100M player. They are getting a serviceable striker at best. The uproar about all this is hilarious. I could understand if barca were
allowed to get mbappe or something but it’s just going to be a player who will play once every 3 weeks most likely. I hope it’s someone who can help a lot, we have a very thin squad but this one signing isn’t going to rock the league most likely.

There is an uproar because it is a stupid rule and there are only a very few exceptional circumstances where this sort of thing should be allowed. Having a long term injury to Dembele is not one of them.

People don’t care about Barcelona’s squad problems. Consistently made by their own decisions by the way.

People care that another teams season is potentially ruined because of Barcelona’s greed. Rule or not, they have stretched it to its limit and could derail a smaller team having a very positive season, just so th eu can have another body on the bench.

People are just pissed that it’s Barca. If it was celta vigo no one would care. It’s laughable. It’s a rule all the teams in the league accepted well before this happened, it’s not like Barca take advantage of it every season, and again, lots of other sports have somewhat similar rules with injury exceptions.

If that’s the case why bother signing him. This is why you have a squad, a b squad, a youth team, a transfer deadline to plan for such scenarios. Clearly Barcelona are getting an advantage weather the person coming is Mbappe or not.

But surely you agree that Barcelona shouldn’t be in this position? And can you agree that it’s unfair to Getafe, who perhaps didn’t see the rule being implemented in this way?

It’s a stretch that they need a number 9 because of a predictable injury to a wide forward who hasn’t been available for most of the season.

They shouldn’t have such a small squad, they shouldn’t have gambled on his fitness in January and theu shouldn’t be allowed to derail another clubs season just because of a quirky interpretation of an emergency rule.

And how often has this rule had to be applied? They got an advantage based on a rule every single la liga team agreed on. It wasn’t some made up rule on the spot to favour Barca. Every team in the league knew the deal. Only on this forum are people whining about it and ironically it’s not even Madrid fans, who at least accept the rule even if they don’t love it.

It’s not a big deal.

Has Getafe given anyone up yet? No.

And upon interviews with members of their staff they’d gladly let one of their players go:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles...s-eur10m-buyout-clause-amid-barcelona-rumours

People are acting like Barca are holding teams hostage and forcing them to sell against their will. Even if Getafe sell Angel
to us they said they’d gladly do it. No other team in la liga is complaining about this.

Now to answer your question I agree there has been some VERY poor planning by the board with our squad. Can’t deny that at all. We have the most expensive squad In the world and we lack wingers and a single #9? The only backup #9 we have we sold in January, and an up and coming CB in Todibo was sent out on loan. We are painfully thin in our defense as well. Alba just got injured today.

I absolutely blame the board for this dire position. Horrible planning and no Plan B. I’m still baffled at zero january signings.

But again, the teams all agreed to the rules and I’d understand so much more if a team was selling a player they were desperate to keep. But Barca are going for players with just a 10M buyout clause.

As a fan I hope whoever they sign does really well obviously, but knowing this board it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s another flop. Simply getting another #9 isn’t going to win us the league. It’ll help, but we have so many squad issues the problems will only get worse and worse as the season goes on.

The rule itself is fine. It's when it's paired with mandatory release clauses that it becomes a bit farcical.
