Newcastle had a bid apparently accepted of £45m for Soumare, but he decided not to leave.

If he’s as good as the caf has been telling us, of course he would reject Newcastle.

First sign of the potential Arab money? Not a very Mike Ashley thing to do, spending big money.

They spent big on a striker last summer while turning down bids for Longstaff etc.
It seems he simply hated Rafa

I read it was £35m...
Steve Bruce has revealed Newcastle made an offer of £35million for a midfielder last week...
Lille's Boubakary Soumare is the player the Magpies were ready to sign, only for the 20-year-old to reject the move.

Bruce said: 'We had a bid accepted that would have been near enough a club record but the player didn't want to come. We got past the club but unfortunately the player wanted to stay where he was"

Lille seem very quick to accept a bid, which is strange considering how highly Soumare is rated..!!

I've explained why Lille were willing to sell in this thread over a week ago.

Could we not sign him now for next season and leave him where he is? Obviously we're not going to do it now, but why didn't we.
Could break a leg, tear an ACL, turn out to be a bit shit. A load of reasons.

I can imagine it being Arsenal - they keep talking about still looking at some deals & seems their type of player.

Or Chelsea - Kante hasn't been great for them this season playing as a midfielder.

Poor Newcastle, probably no chance they'll get him now as they tested the waters for all other clubs to pounce.

Could see us going for him in the summer because think we are probably looking for a proper DM rather than a CM

I don't believe it. More like €30m basic from Newcastle, plus impossible to meet bonuses such as they win PL. More Lille hype for player who cost them nothing whom they want to cash in on.

Anyone know more?
According to reports in January, Lille have lost trust in the players agent and fear he is trying to run the players contract down and were hopeful they could move him on in the transfer window to avoid further problems in the future with the agent. Soumare still has a few years left to run on his contract.

While I understand that point of view, if he is as sought after as it has been reported, surely they wouldn't have any problem selling him to clubs that are more to his and his agent's liking? If their intention is to sell him, completely excluding him seems counterproductive.

I wouldn't be averse to signing this guy in the summer if we still brought in Grealish and a proper RW too ideally Sancho, my gut feeling is that any move for a striker is going to hinge on how Ighalo does from now until the end of the season.

Those clubs that are to the players liking will make their move in the summer window according to some reports. I think it was Duncan Castles who reported via his podcast that there was a number of very big clubs who would move for him in the summer. So it does make sense that the player is gonna bide his time. Lille on the other hand are gonna see their bargaining power at the negotiating table weaken with each passing transfer window whilst the agent will increase his.

This guy is a much better version of Kalvin Phillips and would likely cost the same and is about 5 years younger.

He reminds me of McTominay. I’m not really seeing the comparison with Phillips?

In what way does he remind you of McTominay?

Soumare has far more to his game than Phillips and could play as a #8 too and isn't as limited as the Leeds player.

More of a no.8, gritty rather than silky, a similar sized box to box who’s best quality in possession is in driving forward carrying the ball. Uninspired passing, both in terms of technical quality and the capacity to see good progressive options.

Phillips is similar in that he too is more grit than silk and that he doesn’t really have the brain for building play either, but he is a true holder and the execution of his control and passing is much tighter.

Silky eh? Reminds me of the days when any good technical black footballer was around: Cunningham, Hilaire...silky

Although not quite the same position I can see our club signing Jude Bellingham instead because of his ridiculous potential...

Soumare seems more of a Chelsea type signing with Kante getting older. I hope I’m wrong but it seems like we will struggle to get everything done in the summer including a CDM.

Phillips is limited IMO and it was reported by the likes of Ducker etc that we were looking for a midfielder that could play both as a #6 and a #8. Soumare fits that profile and Phillips doesn't. And being silky on the ball isn't essential for a top club in the position in question.

Soumare is also comfortably better than McTominay in literally every facet.
