Only managed to watch parts of the game but when he was on or near the ball, it was just pure entertainment

It'd be interesting to see him play in a two with Maguire with Matic in front and AWB, Shaw or Williams pushing more forward. It'd be nice to be 5-15 yards further up the pitch as opposed to when Lindelof plays because we're constantly back tracking.

It's like watching the defensive version of Nani. Certainly never boring.

I can’t help but love Eric Bailly. I mean, I know he’ll probably end up screwing up numerous times over the next few games, leading to several of the most preventable goals conceivable, but he’s just such a great showman.

Never has a defender managed to rotate between looking like Beckenbauer then Bramble in the space of mere seconds. Looking to hire someone to carry out a Cruyff turn in your own box? Most mere mortals might whip that one out while winning 6-0 against a team like Tranmere; not Eric Bailly. He does it at Stamford Bridge, when the score is 0-0 and over an hour remains on the clock. Why? Because he can. And for his own amusement.

He’s up there with Ando as the GOAT of still being lovable despite frequently suffering from not being very good.

The most important quality for a CB is to be reliable. Until Bailly learns how to do that, the rest of clown shit is worth nothing

He didn't win 100% of his aerial duels, unless Statman Dave isn't counting the two that he mistimed and jumped underneath in textbook Bailly fashion. He is so shit in the air, it is hilarious.

Had a 2 or 3 brainfarts where he lost the ball in his own half and had us scrambling back towards our own goal in very avoidable circumstances.

Did a stepover in his own penalty area.

Classic Bailly.
And you dont mention the good things he did to get a clean shèet at Stamford Bridge. oh ya he didn't play for months too.
Lindelof makes multiple mistakes a game and is generally a passive defender that is scared most of the time

Good fun watching him today with a couple of excellent moments. Be great if he can keep it up, Shaw and Bailly either side of Maguire looks good.

Yes, I get that. My post was a tongue in cheek one and clearly didn’t advocate him to be a regular starter for the club.

A lot of super moments and rather too many awful moments too. I suppose overall, for a first match of the season, having been out for so long, it was a decent performance.

People talk about goalkeepers making world class saves, that was definitely a world class tackle. The amount of ground he covers is incredible.

Have we ever played Bailly, Jones, and Rojo all together? Now that would be hilarious. (Yes, I realize Rojo is no longer at the club, but still)

This is kind of nuts. I’ve watched it a dozen times and I’m impressed every single time

I love him again. His pace in recovery and aggressive nature can make for a balanced partnership or trio with Shaw and Maguire. Hopefully he'll stay fit and continue to improve.

He still has his brainfart moments but i'll take one or two of those for every 10 games he plays for us.

Arguably the most suitable partner for Maguire at the back too. Maguire is decent in the air and composed. Bailly is almost totally the opposite with pace and is an all action player. the only problem is of course his injury record.

Another supremely player that had his confidence smashed to bits. If he gets his confidence back it's almost like a new signing same as Fred. On ability and potential he might be our best center back.

He had another one of those beautiful turns in the 2nd half, too.

That is beautiful. He even has time to hesitate for a pass to Pedro.

I don't particularly rate Lindelof either, CB is a problem position, which is crazy considering the money we have spent there in the last 4 years.

I also don't think it matters that Bailly hasn't played for ages. That wasn't a rusty Bailly performance. That was a typical Bailly performance. Some good moments, whilst often failing at the basics. Pre-injury he was laughable in the air and would give the ball away in his own half, and last night was more of the same. He is capable of good things, but throughout his time here it's always been overshadowed by him just generally not being a good centre back.

If he hasn't learned to head the ball at 25, he never will. Hard to take a centre back seriously who loses an aerial duel with nobody but himself.

Maguire seems to be a very good leader and organiser, maybe playing beside slabhead will be good for Bailly when it comes to reducing the batshit crazy aspects of his game

I think we did in an FA Cup game.

Hopefully. Id rather see him playing at CB than Lindleof.

He certainly shut up the whiney feckers who were going at him before the game even started. Would definitely put him ahead of Lindelof already. Considering how long he's been out, that was some comeback performance.

Typical performance, makes you extremely nervous every time, will be caught out at times but will also make some vital blocks and tackles.

I can’t help but like him despite him being a mad man

Yes he's mad and will mistakes. But we desperately need some athleticism at the back to help Maguire.

I am certain if it was Lindelof on Kovacic he would have crab-walked slowly with his hands behind his back towards him and the ball would be in the back of the net.

Bailly is a human vicious circle.

He has moments of class surrounded by moments of chaos and amateur mistakes. The way that a player irons those creases out of his game is by playing regularly, and Eric is made of glass so he can't play regularly. The cycle continues!

If he was better in the air (and obviously, not mental) he'd be the perfect partner for Maguire, sadly.

How can you not love a guy who has the audacity to do a stepover on his own 6 yard line, and the skill to pull it off.

He's always been the most talented of all our defenders. With a prolonged run in the side he might start to cut the crazy out, but he's never had the chance because of injuries. You could say it's also because hes had some shocking games but so did Fred in his early days, and look at him now. If he could ever string together 6 months of starts there could be a top player there.

He needs to do and eat whatever Fred has had to stay fit. And he needs to take mental coaching with Romero on how to stay focus and calm all the time.

Nice to see he hasn't lost his pace after those nasty injuries also. His confidence certainly hasn't dipped either!

That tackle on Kovacic was insane, love that he destroyed him in the process

The bolded is the problem though. He has all the raw tools and ability, but talent means nothing if you are constantly injured, and never get to grow and improve on the training ground and work with the coaches. This same issue can be said about so many of our defenders that it is sad. Jones, Rojo, Shaw, Axel, TFM have been cursed with injuries. Jones and Rojo are hopeless, Baily and Shaw can still salvage their careers if they can get over their injury problems, and Axel and TFM are still very young and have time on their sides.

I wonder if we need to update our medical department, considering how many injuries we seem to suffer, or are some of these players just injury prone and not much can be done ?

Our medical department definitely needs a clear out but Bailly's banzai style of running full tilt into crushing challenges certainly doesn't help his cause.

95% of the game Trash. 5% of the game, greatest defender that has ever lived.

He‘s just ridiculous. Can go from terrible to incredible at the drop of a hat. I feel like he just needs to calm down and realise he doesn’t have to chase every all and get dragged out of position all the time.

Had that one clearing tackle with the 50-50 with DeGea and then that block on Kovacic but that but around the 37th minute where he is in our box being the coolest man in the stadium as all and sundry closing in on him.
Lindelof doesn't defend mate - he doesn't make a mistake because he isn't nowhere to be seen.

Out of position when maguire tries to intercept & scared to get his pants dirty because he hasn't been taught how to make a slide tackle. Zonal defending is apparently a problem because we have a single centre back who tries to jump for a defender whilst Lindelof stands there ball watching and turns his back because he is scared of the ball hitting his face.

Bailly isn't long term but was always going to be a better partner to Maguire the same reason why Rojo was a better partner to Maguire because they get stuck in whilst Lindelof is too shy.

That's why Smalling shouldn't have been sold & why Southgate is a poor manager for England.
Agreed. If that was Lindelof trying to tackle Kovacic he would have just stood there 6 yards away with his hands behind his back and dangled a leg hoping it would block, then when Chelsea score he will just throw his hands up in the air and look upset.
First game back and I know we’ve been here before but hopefully he can get a run, stay fit and someone can get through to him and make him a good defender.
Wow. Talk about an over exaggeration

Haha. Hard to argue with this.
