Can anyone remember why the booing started in the first place?

It's the sign of a small-time club and have never understood the origins of it.
The booing started when Cska got a last minute stadium ban for racism. Lots of City fans left broke unable to reclaim expenses/deposits on a trip to Moscow because of short notice.
Then when the match went ahead you could plainly see on tv, there was about 1k CSKA fans in the stadium. So basically City fans ended up out of pocket and punished by Uefa for CSKA's racism.

Chelsea were already a feature in the top 4 before Abramovich. Saying that they wouldn't challenge top 4 is not a claim you can comfortably make when we've got teams like Sheffield United and Wolves challenging the current top against Chelsea and United with money to name a few.
And they financially ruined themselves to do it. If Abramovich hadn't come along, they'd have been screwed.

At the time of the Abramovich takeover, the club also had debts of around £100 million, which included a ten-year £75 million Eurobond taken out in 1997 by the Bates regime to buy the freehold of Stamford Bridge and finance the redevelopment of the stadium. The 9% interest on the loan cost the club around £7 million a year and according to Bruce Buck, Chelsea were struggling to pay an instalment due in July 2003.[143] Abramovich paid off some of this debt immediately, but the outstanding £36 million on the Eurobond was not fully repaid until 2008.[144] Since then, the club have had no external debt.[145]

Abramovich changed the ownership name to Chelsea FC plc, whose ultimate parent company is Fordstam Limited, which is controlled by him.[146] Chelsea are additionally funded by Abramovich via interest free soft loans channelled through his holding company Fordstam Limited. The loans stood at £709 million in December 2009, when they were all converted to equity by Abramovich, leaving the club themselves debt free,[147][148] although the debt remains with Fordstam.[149]

Chelsea did not turn a profit in the first nine years of Abramovich's ownership, and made record losses of £140m in June 2005.[150] In November 2012, Chelsea announced a profit of £1.4 million for the year ending 30 June 2012, the first time the club had made a profit under Abramovich's ownership.[150][151] This was followed by a loss in 2013 and then their highest ever profit of £18.4 million for the year to June 2014.[152] In 2018 Chelsea announced a record after-tax profit of £62 million.[153]

If they had stopped the lavished spending they probably would have been fine as it wasn't a huge sum of money but with Roman they could simply spend a lot more. They got in before, or rather were the reason why FFP is a thing.

Agree. In the totally shock scenario, they will dock them enough points that leaves them in same league position.
They won’t. The EPL is extremely forgiving of club’s transgressions. Don’t want to make the billionaires uncomfortable

It started after a Champions League away game against CSKA Moscow in 2014. It was supposed to be played behind closed doors after a bunch of their fans were found guilty of racist chanting, but roughly 200 of their supporters were allowed in the ground anyway. I don't personally believe the following to be true, but some City fans thought the fans' presence in the stadium inspired a second-half comeback from Moscow - the game finished 2-2 when we'd been 2-0 up with thirty minutes left. Throw in the fact that Moscow's equaliser came from a controversial penalty and you have enough of a reason for us to start booing the Champions League anthem in the next home game. After that night it just became a thing City fans did before every Champions League game because we were (and still are) convinced UEFA were out to get us in some way - you know, "the group stage/knockout draws are rigged", the FFP fine in 2014, "the referees hate us and give everything to Barca/Madrid", "they don't like us breaking up the elite", etc. It's all nonsense really but there are a dozen reasons why City fans boo the anthem and this latest round of allegations and sanctions will only make things worse.

To be fair to them if you're a city fan you would consider a crowd of 200 a game changer :wenger:

Still refusing to accept that they're a dirty cheating club with an asterix beside every trophy they've won since they started cheating?

Commit a crime then complain about how much the police are out to get you. Just Man City things.

Their new mascot should be Asterix in a City kit. With the added bonus that there’s no need to photoshop in the obligatory snide City moustache.

I reckon there's more to come from all this. It's funny nobody has tried to sign any of their top players basically ever yet they have raided Liverpool, Chelsea and United in same era. Their players are probably on a lot more money than we're being led to believe. I'm certain of it actually. Wouldn't shock me to learn their wage bill is actually another 50% on top of their figures. The football leaks claims certainly make it seem that way too. Mancini being paid a big chunk of his wages off the books. If they did for him who is to say they stopped there?

I love how they've had their bubble burst. They can't handle it at all.

I've been saying the exact same thing for years. Very odd that the likes of Barcelona & Madrid haven't even attempted to try for the likes of David Silva & Aguero over the years and now De Bruyne & Bernardo Silva.

If Mancini was being paid the bulk of his salary via other avenues, you can guarantee the players are receiving similar salaries and in addition bonus payments over and above what's on the books.

Highly likely I'd say. And the best thing is the more they call Uefa's bluff the more digging they will do.

If City don't like the rules and think they restrict smaller clubs then that's one thing. But to go ahead and just blatantly ignore them won't have gone down well. The leaked email about them making a joke about one of the FFP committee dying too won't have helped them. "1 down 5 more to go" wasn't it?

Be fantastic if they stand firm and don't even reduce it a to just a year however that's still my guess as what they will do. They've given them two years in the full knowledge they will appeal and go for the one year I bet.

However their reputation is now tainted. Everyone knows they broke the rules. They'll hate it.

Is it just me, or did it feel really empty when they were winning things? I felt very little anger or annoyance at Pep’s trophies because I just felt “ah, it’s to be expected with that squad and the spending”

This just heightens that sensation. It’s a massive blow and I actually feel sorry for the more sane City supporters who have to contemplate that such an era was achieved through dishonest means.

The most bizarre twist would be them winning the CL this year and UEFA officials having to hand them the trophy after basically admitting they shouldn’t be allowed to compete in it. And City fans trying to keep up the pretense that it means nothing, while also negotiating the guilt of winning it whilst being found to have cheated. Would almost be worth seeing them go the whole way.

It has the potential to be a big mess over the next year or so.

I hope there is a resolution for the fans of the club and a way forward, but they definitely should not be allowed to keep what they have won. It wouldn’t make any sense.
