I don't like the way Bruno takes penalties

I feel like it's a way of buying a split second to see which way the keeper moves. His record speaks for itself. Intrigued to see how he deals with the keeper not moving the way he wants and if he can react in time because of it.

It is a bit weird and it's fair to say you don't like it even if it works, although it might partly be because of Pogba doing some daft shit and not actually being that great at them. I'm sure if it works enough for us everyone will love it.

My only worry is you take them like that at a club as scrutinised as United and the first time you miss one it's all the media want to talk about. As long as he doesn't get phased by the increased pressure that'll put on him, then he's grand. If he does it could all end in tears.

Can only hope for the best.
Well strictly speaking he's taken one so far, scored it and he's already being criticized.

That's a very good number which he converted but the level of the goalkeepers in Portugal is not so great.
I obviously still hope that his way of taking them will keep on baffling PL keepers! :D
Well it baffled me and I'm just a lowly spectator. The poor keeper stood no bloody chance.

Bruno's explanation for his bizarre penalty-taking technique:

"It’s the way I shoot a penalty, it’s where I feel confident," he told BBC Sport. "I do not shoot just that way but it felt the best way today."

Well, that clears that up.

Thanks Bruno.

For me he was MOTM today but i have some criticism of the way he takes penalties.

I watched him taking them for Sporting for some time before he joined us and he was very lucky in Portugal with a number of them and the 'help' of dodgy goalkeepers.
I knew exactly how and where he was going to kick this today and any PL goalkeeper who had seen his penalties before would have had a great chance of saving this one - the good thing is that Foster seems not to have watched him before.

The next penalty we'll get will be crucial for Bruno and, i feel, he should not continue with his hop prior to his kick as it takes the impetus off his penalty kick.
Quit whining.

Every method is viable until it results in misses.

Ugly style to my eyes but that is not important.

Careful OP....I tried this earlier

:nono::D

I honestly expected this thread to be a satirical one and don't know whether I'm comforted or disappointed by it being genuine.

See josef Martinez for how stupid it looks when it goes wrong.
I keep trying to forget I saw that. He cost almost £900 last time he missed one. When it goes wrong it looks like someone that's never played or even seen football before trying to take one.

I don't like stupid run ups in general. Run at it and twat the fecking thing.

I love it. Penalties are skill. That is why Bruno didn't miss penalty 4 years.
With Rashford( and many many other players) it is more luck and less skill. They decide in front where they will place the ball and if shot is not perfect and gk goes on right side, it is missed penalty.

That was quite some time ago when he was with Udinese .
It's the last time he missed apparently...just the 4 years ago! Oh, and he's been designated penatly taker for his club the last 2 seasons. I have a feeling be knows what he's doing

A little harsh on Rashford, no? He's only missed 2 of 13 penalties, and one of those came off the inside of the post - small margins.

He has excellent technique when taking them too.

I've seen a few of his pens before and I got the impression he's quite adept at altering what he does at the very end of the rather baffling process.
Yes I watched quite a few more of his penalties for the first time after the match and it does indeed seem like he has sufficient control over the eventual contact so as to strike the ball in different areas and with differing power. Honestly it seems like it should be even worse a technique than a stuttered stop start run up that doesn't leave terra firma.

I can just see young Bruno doing this during his kickabouts whilst growing up. Quite how his father never turned around and told him to cut that out I'll never know. :D And if he started that whilst training with a club, how he got that through without being ridiculed to the point of changing it I also wonder. I blame the flair of the South Americans/all the fancy penalty takers the world has produced. Everyone should take penalties like Shearer and Scholes.

All this said, 21/23....well I guess the Pogba/Rashford penalty taker debate is closed.

I liked it. The kind of arrogant confidence he had about him today is something we really need more of. Particularly without Rashford or Pogba...and the later of those two rarely used it in a good way.

Harsh? I would not called it like that. As i said in general i don't like when players don't look at gk. Rash scored a lot but lots of them were very close to gk. Yes it is also skill how he kick them into right place but it is still risky. Shearer and Le tissier are exceptions but in general it is more luck than skill.
Mendieta, Prosinecki( remember him?) , Balotelli, Jorginho are players who know how it is done. Now that is skill imo.

I don't care if he's hitting the ball with his cock as long his conversion rate stays the same.

He's converted 21 out of 23 penalties.
You've no idea what you're talking about, thanks for the input. /thread.

It’s not easy to stand still until the ball gets kicked. Keepers are trained to dive first. That said, if the keeper doesn’t move his plan B is just to hit it with power to either side. It will take a really special save to stop that from going in.

Probably thinks Super Liga’s GKs are shite and only the ones from the mighty BPL can save a pen.
Bingo! If anything, penalties is one aspect of the game where I really don’t see a reason for top keepers to have a better chance than keepers from worse leagues, or even lower leagues. De Gea had saved what, two penalties for us? Probably more, but that is what I remember from the top of my head.

Has worked flawlessly for Jorginho so far, what's the problem?

He scored every single one he took for us. 12 in game and a bunch of them in shootouts.

I frankly couldnt care if he runs up, does a belly slide and heads it from the penalty spot mid slide as long as he puts it in the goal. Lots of penalty misses earlier this season have cost us points. His conversion rate is very good and as long as that continues thats all that matters

I don't, as long as he scores, who cares. Pogba had a shit run up as well and failed too often. That is why most were bothered.
Bruno looks more efficient. And the excuse that keepers in Portugal are shit doesn't stand, since Jorginho is scoring as well with the same technique in England and internationally.

It may not be aesthetically pleasing, but does anyone genuinely care as long as he scores 9/10? I doubt most do.

Yeah, was going to say. The last time he missed a penalty was 4 years ago. Not bad.

First one for us, a lot of pressure (Sanchez for example fecked up first in his 3rd game here). The easier way is just to smash it or choose a side in advance, so I actually liked the way he did it. Cool as a cucumber.

Man City's takers are all fairly traiditional, but they've missed 4 in a row. Bruno has a 100% record in this league (joking aside, he's only missed 2 in his career). Of all of the team's problems, this might be the smallest one.

As long as he scores it's fine. If he fecks it up at one point I'll be against doing it again.

I thought it looked cool as feck. I was nervous but he was clearly on top of that shit. Good thing is to know he needs to smash it next time or he'll definitely miss.

The hop wasn't pleasant on the eyes, he needs to improve its aesthetic.
