Is this still a thing? Ole is Norwegian and the owners are American but that doesn’t seem to count it seems. Probably why we went after Christopher Easton from Spurs and Paul Dalton of Juve last window. :D

There’s nothing wrong with having a preference for players who have grown up in a teams country. There’s so many aspects in play that makes signing a player from abroad riskier than one who knows the league, the language, the culture etc. And as England has arguably the best set of young players in the world at the moment, there’s all the more reason to.

There is when they are very very average players being touted at high prices. Ridiculously high in this case and the case of Sean fecking Longstaff.

If you can’t see that a 20 year old Declan Rice is a very talented footballer who can only improve, then I don’t know what to say really.

Sure, I wouldn’t want us to spend £70/80 million + on him at this stage, but I am confident he will become a very good player.

Some people are way too quick to dismiss a players ability after a bad game or two. A lot of you did this exact same thing to Tammy Abraham when he missed that penalty, now he’s proving to be one of the best strikers in the league this season. Our own fans even did the same with McTominay and he’s arguably been our best player this season.

Every player is different and will take a different trajectory, but my point is sometimes it’s too easy to write young players off, especially when a blind man can see they are talented.
Him being talented or not isn't the issue.. The issue is he good enough to play at United and the simple answer is no he isn't . He isnt anywhere near good enough on the ball and in general he just isnt as good as some people had tried to make us believe

Don't understand the hype with this one. I expect defenders for a top club to be better on the ball then this guy and he is a mid...

He hasn’t kicked on this season and his place in the England squad will be in jeopardy if Jose resurrects Eric Dier.

Schneiderlin at Southampton was a far better player than current Declan Rice. Anyone stupid enough to spend the £60M+ needs their head checked.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind, but for the (supposed) massive price, no. I think Garner has just as much skill and even higher potential.
I think there’s a place for both Rice and Garner in United’s squad as they’re completely different players, Garner is much more like a Carrick or Xabi Alonso type defensive midfielder whilst Rice is more of a destroyer from what I’ve seen and mainly breaks up play.

We do need an out and out defensive midfielder in the squad as none of McTominay, Fred or Garner are that type of player and Matic’s legs are pretty much gone so if West Ham go down then I’d be happy going for Rice and think we’d get him for £40 million maximum.

I'd happily have him as CB. I think he has real potential there.
This is kind of what I think to.

He hasn't wowed me alot as a midfielder - but considering 352 is our Plan B, having him as one of the back 3 and being the first to make the defensive tackles as a defensive midfielder playing within a defensive back 3 would really suit him.

He is literally a defender made to play as a midfielder at West ham probably because they need to do so.

If he was cheap though - no point going for him if West ham wanted what they were asking for before.

I also think he wouldn't move if we told him we don't see you as DM. People have blown too much smoke up his arse about him in that position. Have a feeling he probably wont go anywhere and rot at West ham.

He's had alot of shockers now for West Ham and England & if he plays there in the Euros I can see it continuing.

I can see him moving to a bigger club maybe with the idea he plays CDM & realises that he's cr*p & setlle back to the CB he should be.

He has good ability to beat a press in terms of a defender - the problem about him is though he has no awareness as a midfielder - that awareness a midfielder has where they know who and where they are going to pass the ball to even before they get it.

Whether you are Matic, Makelele or Scholes - whether you can pass a short distance only or not - you must know your weakness & strengths before planning the game out in your head as a midfielder.

Rice plays as a defender - a bit reactively trying to defend well - but gets the ball but can't make anything click even with a simple short pass to a player next to him.

I really like his ability to beat a press though & make some turns - the things that made people try him out in midfield; but that's what I think that makes him a potentially really good CB for England.

Rice & Maguire wouldn't be too bad I say.

I've never quite seen what the hype is about.

If West Ham went down I think he'd be attainable for £40m. At that price he's certainly worth a punt to fulfil his alleged potential at either CDM or CB in the next few years. If he doesn't, we'd still be able to recoup most of that while he's in his mid 20s.

As average as average can be. Would be a major step back to bring in the likes of him.
It's bad enough with Maddison and Grealish getting hyped.

My issue with Rice is how many games has he played at CB at premier league level? Are we just assuming he is going to be good enough?

Personally I would pass on him and buy someone who has been playing CB for the past couple of years instead.
As a CM I wouldnt go anywhere near him

Its interesting that 2 of our top targets for CM last summer, Rice and Longstaff have been crap...

The one we briefed was apparently not good enough, Bruno, turning out to be pretty good...

Why do english clubs «always» decide to play a central defender who is good on the ball in midfield (where they are average on the ball)? In my opinion, both Rice and Dier could have become really good central defenders.

We can't have rated them that highly considering we gave up on both very quickly whereas we paid the money for our other targets.

I'm guessing Longstaff was supposed to be a punt like Daniel James and United expected to buy at 16-18M. Once Newcastle quoted 50M, they promptly packed up and left.

The way the premier league is setting up, signing anyone from a middling club is getting a lot more difficult. Chelsea are the only top side to sign premier league players are rotation options in the last 5 years. It's getting that expensive. We are heading into an era where depth will be very limited amongst top sides like it was in the 90s due to the price of these players in the market. We either need to shop for these players in lower leagues like the Scottish league or Eredivisie, develop more youngsters to provide depth ( which is what Fergie always did) or sign them from the championship.

That's a fair assessment. There should still be some nice players to gamble on from sides that are either going to get relegated like Norwich/Villa or fail to get promoted like Leeds or Birmingham.

Close this thread ffs. With Bruno, McT, Fred, Pogba (for now at least) and with reasonable options like Grealish and Maddison, why on Earth would we consider this guy?

We didn't bid for either of them.

Yet we did bid for Maguire, James, AWB, Dybala, de Ligt, Eriksen, Fernandes and Mejbri.

There are absolutely no conditions under which you could claim that Rice and Longstaff were top targets.

We did not bid for Fernandes. Mejbri was a youth signing

The Sporting chairman said he got more in January than United were offering in the summer. We were in serious enough negotiations for numbers to be discussed in both directions.

Both were higher priority targets than Rice and Longstaff, for whom we never got that far. At best they were 9th and 10th priority. Most likely, they were below even that.

How is he playing for United then?

There's been something like 300 players we were linked with; the ones we actually went full on for are very good. Don't see anything wrong with the recruitment since the Ole era began. Seems like Sancho and Grealish are next. Longstaf and Rice might have been on the radar but clearly came out short as we did not make moves for them.

Signing for Everton or something will be best for him. I'd expect him to fade away like Schneiderlin or Jack Rodwell if he goes to a top club.

Given that we did not go for them all out suggests it was either media bs or they were seen as potential cheap gambles and we walked away. I wouldn't worry about the scouting and recruitment at this stage given the players we went after.
